I mentioned this to you the other day, but I really don't get the even meager fame the rake has. With things like Jeff the killer, despite it being awful, you can see exactly why he's popular among preteen edgelords. The rake is like a forgotten scp monster from the 2000s-3000s range that doesn't even have the tumblr original creation do not steal style to make it memorable.
I like the rake because I like the idea that there is something unnatural out there in the woods, wandering...

It blows my mind but, looking back on it, this is far and away the best out of all five Creepypasta movies you reviewed.

As for the movie it was sort of a disaster that comes off more as an awkward attempt at comedy than horror, I can only imagine how bad things are gonna get once a director gets the idea of making a zalgo movie.

Honestly these types of Creepypasta vids remind me of the good ol' days of the internet, back when I was young and stupid for getting scared at these stories.
The title "The Raking" made me imagine a movie about a bunch of leaves running away from a scary gardener who gathers their pals up and sticks them in the bin bag of doom!

One problen I have with the rake in this movie the rake is on highn legs for to long. This should be impossible because in the creepy pasta it says "it had the body position of something that was run over by a car". The rake can't walk on 2 legs because again in the creepypasta it says"the creature tried walking on highn legs awkwardly" they just half assed it.

In case your wondering what the other Rake movie is like, hes the best review I could find on Letterbox.
Randomly stumbled over this and was curious to see a film based on a creepypasta that wasn't old ass Slender Man.
I always liked the visuals of the Rake creature anyway.
The film started out alright too but showed its real face very soon when it just became a boring mess. Like 90% of this film is just a sort of ensemble drama of a couple moving back into an old neighborhood and having friends over, some of them dealing with trauma induced mental illnesses. The actual Rake doesn't actually appear or have much effect on the plot until the final 20 minutes. It feels more like a failed drama about the stigma mentally ill people face and how people deal with them than a horror story about a creepypasta monster.
It still could have been a decent movie that way but the script is jusr fucking shit and neither holds the depth nor the crestivity to keep you engaged with that. It's a total mess. I found it hard to follow and it never really gets anywhere.
It's weird how the protagonists, the only characters here that got an actual exposition sequence, are treated like side characters. It was so confusing to see the opening sequence of two kids losing their parents and then the rest of the film starts with these bland adult characters that never get much of an introduction like we're supposed to know who they are. It took me a while to figure out which adult characters were supposed to be the grown up kids since they obviously were important to the story. The script really lacked a clearer focus.
The sound editing is also really shit. Audio levels are really inconsistent. There is a bunch of clipping and at one point the actors must have worn mics on their body and when they hug you could clearly hear the mic being smushed inbetween them and going nuts. Beginner shit.
The few things it got going for it are that it is filmed decently. It has a clear image, some neat lighting and shot compositions. Most actors are pretty good too, it's just that the terrible script fucks them over. I would like to see Shenae Grimes-Beec, Rachel Melvin and Joey Bicicchi in films with a good script.
The Rake itself doesn't look too bad either. At least it kinda resembles the popular artworks of it. I definitely expected worse. But again it only appears in the final few minutes and it's not very satisfying or engaging.
Some of the practical effects throughout the film aren't great either.
So was it faithful to the source material? Well, I honestly think it took enough elements of it.
If you read the creepypasta you know it's just a few random vague diary entries from throughout history and then a brief story of a person who's family got attacked by it one night. Very short and nothing fancy.
The film doesn't follow that story but it takes parts of it for sure. Enough for it to be a Rake film I'd say.
The few things the text tells you about how the creature works and behaves are pretty much in here. It's whispering to people in a way that not everyone can hear. It's latching on to people and spreading like a virus. It slices them up with pointy claws.
The creepypasta is vague and short anyway and the creature enigmatic and simple so there isn't that much to take from it. In that regard it did alright I'd say although it doesn't really follow the same vibes I guess. I definitely wouldn't say this is the reason why this film sucks though.
It's just the goddamn useless fucking script. It doesn't put those elements to very good use and spends way too long with the flat, boring and dumb characters.
Oh, Fun Fact: As of this writing there is only one piece of trivia on this film's IMDB page saying:
"There is a character named Michelle in the film but there is absolutely no credit for her, like she never existed."
I laughed out loud when I read this. Calling an uncredited random character a spooky piece of trivia is maybe the dumbest thing I've seen on that site. Especially since that character/actor is in the list of credits on that site anyway.
I saw that one too. I will admit that it was definitely better than this one, The Raking. But it still had some definite problems.

In any case, one interesting thing to bring up is that there's actually a 3rd Rake movie on UA-cam, being a free to watch online movie similar to a Slenderman movie called Wendigo. Just a neat little tid-bit to anyone unaware.

One thing I have to disagree with you on is the idea that all horror movie monsters need a set of rules to follow. Rules and limitations definitely work well for most, but in the case of someone like Slenderman, I don't think rules would make him a good movie monster. I personally believe that a monster like Slenderman shouldn't be defeatable. As you said at the start of your Slender review, in these kinds of stories, it feels like the characters are going up against some kind of Lovectaftian god. And his powers are cool because they feel otherworldly. What kind of limitations would you give something like that? Because I can't think of many that wouldn't seriously cripple his intimidation.
