I'm quite a strong swimmer. I thought, I could tow the board and rig to the nearest shoal. I was wrong. Of course, 220 ltr is more than enough to paddle to the shore. I didn't want to crush my sail under my body. Of course, if in emergency I would've dump my rig and try to get to safety. Thanks!
You should never try to help another sailor. If you are trying, you end up both exhausted. And danger your own life to safe another. Just check if hes ok. If not, go to the beach and search for a boat or call to lifegaurds.
I always take two lines of 1.5 meter long, one in harness , the other rolled in small size and tied to the back end of back footstrap (in that position it does not entangle during sailing) to tie broken parts togehter(boom, joint). The reason for taking two is, it sometimes, unhappily, boom breakage may occur in two places (one may follow after first breakage allmost simultaneously during trying not to fall in water instinctively). In the case above, broken parts can be connected with line easily because the grip portion is covered with sponge and in many cases it will bring you home without reversing the boomhead direction. Especially when you flip the sail and sail back to the direction where you came from.
me and friend both did this trick sailing in kihei maui, both broke boom arms in the same week, ( he did it twice,...rental gear) but luckily we did it on the way out on starboard tack and just flipped the rig and sailed back. The sail was pretty bagged out though, in 4.7 conditions.
Long time ago this clip. My Chinook ali boom broke like this last summer. The salt water ate through it. This happened close to shore, short swim back put a couple of screws in it and got back on the water 😂 About 30 mins later the other side side of the boom broke in the same place. I lashed some rope around the broken end of the boom and tied it off to the mast and sailed back. Least i got some extra time on the water 😊
Flip boom, or double knot broken part to the mast boom portion, he had plenty of cord. sail holding on the mast with one hand. Anyway there were many options other than swimming. Swimming increases you chances of fatigue or hypothermia
Thank You for your input. When sailing with aluminium boom we should be aware that it can suddenly snap. It just happens. The place I was sailing is rather shallow. Water is clear and bottom is more or less visible. But you can not tell how deep it was. I was trying to reach a sandbank. Of course swimming is absolutely stupid. I'm quite a strong swimmer but towing your equpiment is sensless. To flip the boom you should disconnect uphauling line. To do this the mast should be disconnected first what is tricky in even the smallest waves. I suggest not to do it when the water is more rough. So your advice to try to fasten the broken front part to the mast is good.(but the tail of the tube is also bent- almost broken) But first thing one should try to do is sail clew first. And I also suggest to think it all over before we go sailing. It is good that so many people has seen this video (to my surprise)
"leaning against the other side of the sail" I don't think one can do it for a longer period of time (I was some 1 km from the shore) Sailing clew first-that was the way to go!
I don't understand what you want to achieve there? Swimmung home? Repairing it? Why dont you put the mast & sail on your board an paddle? Or sail with the remaining side of the boom?
I know from my previous experience that trying to tow the equipment is pointless .I was just trying to get to nearest sand bank where water depth is shallow enough to do all repairs in comfort. To sit on rolled sail and trying to paddle with the mast-I wasn,t that desperate then.
Jacek Zysnarski okay, I didn't get that you were going for a sandbank, I thought you were just paddling around not knowing what to do. I always leave the sail on the mast and just lay it with mast and bo on the board, so it doesn't drag through the water. Works fine when paddeling
wait....video ended too soon. did flipping boom not work out well for you? seemed like the perfect solution - easier than clew first sailing (for any distance) in my estimation.
Flipping the boom worked out perfectly. In fact there were only this two options-towing was impossible , derigging and swimming even in this good conditions -very difficult. Video was interrupted because as far as I remember my battery went flat. Thanks for watching. I do not have my Gopro any more, but still windsurf and my Kona is still alive.
I see now. Your downhaul had to be taken off so you could flip the boom over. But you are right, sailing clew first would have been easier. Remember folks, you don't even have to be able to waterstart clew first. Just waterstart using the one good side, then jibe but don't flip the sail.
Ditto. Good thing you had calm seas. Had the same think happen to me. Clew first water start and headed back to the beach. I've broken masts, fins, unjoints and ripped sails. Once paddled in with a broke mast, took forever, The sun set and the parking lot was empty.
It is Exocet Kona 11,5' (discontinuet years ago). Originally a wave board for ocean sailing (hawaii style). Length 330cm, width-70cm, vol 220ltr(?). Easy to gybe. A very comfortable ride. Thanks for watching!
It is Exocet Kona 11,5' (now Exocet x-longboard) a very versatile board ( I own 6 boards and if I had to reduce their number I would choose this one to stay)
hahahahaha ..... what are you all talking about is very simple i did some years ago .... 6 milles from the beach because i sail all the time long distens .... so we can use the harnes line to fix the boom together the frond broken and you go easy back youneed to use your brain when you go far ..... super wind to your sails :)))))

what about sailing back CLEW FIRST? :)
I cant believe a bunch of other sailors just flew by and no one stopped to help. that is so lousy.
They sailed by and check he is safe, if Jacek was in danger I am pretty sure they will help.

Yeah he is. Rotten rep. Don't blow.

강태희 good thinking
he ha enough rope to tie the boom parts back together ? just temporary to sail in slow....?
whats wrong with taking the boom off" flip it over, sail back in"" still one good side"!!!
seems like he finally did that
Derr!
yeah I was thinking that or just ride back sailing the sail backwards (clew first), yeah a little harder but beats swimming.
Or, you can sail leeward back winded.
@@pixelloopy will try this skill next time riding. Thank you so much.

You've got a whole lot of board to rest on. Save your strength and use that flotation.
beware rdm masts and booms with a shim, for example Aeron. The shim can easily pop out and will sink if you let go of it.
you can unrig, roll the sails, put them on the board and paddle back, much easier than swim :)
You can also do the self rescue technique in this video. I think it is great!

Good it all went ok. What board are you using, dimensions and volume. Looks like it goes well in light wind.
learn the clue first waterstart n practice sailing clue first ...u be home in no time....
handy tools to have in your box
How did you get home?
He should have de-rigged the sail from the wishbone and mast, laid both upon the board and paddled to the shoreline.
derig everything, put in on the board, get on the rigs and paddle back, faster than swim
i've seen a surfer at home leaning against the other side of the sail. you just could have done that or even use the sail backwards
"leaning against the other side of the sail"
I don't think one can do it for a longer period of time (I was some 1 km from the shore)
Sailing clew first-that was the way to go!
he was doing it quite some time. but it wasn't too much wind. clew first is what i also would have tried, as i'm not that skilled surfer
crazy. Well Done

That always happen with alloy boom due to metal fatique . Carbon boom is better .
Heh, I kind of agree and I've never broken any ally boom that I've bought new. But I did break a used carbon 2 piece mast.
Why was it necessary to take the mast off? It's extremely difficult to put back on in the water

Hi!Taking the mast off was nesesery to disconnect the uphaul line which was looped around the mast extension :-)
thanks
en el video se ve todo lo que no hay que hacer!!!, aparte ningún otro windsurfista paró a ayudar
well done man..!

you can also take of the boom flip it upside down put it back on sail back in :)
+Mark Kennedy That was what I did......
+Jacek Zysnarski sorry I just saw you swimming hah! nice once, good to see people using there head :)
why after put the whish on the other side, you disconect the mast base and reconnect it, dont understand???
*****
Uphaul line connected to mast base. If I had a knife-would cut the line to save the trouble of disconnecting mast base.
what board is this?

@@jacekzet56 No dagger board?
@@MrFanaticrat No dagger! Dagger equipped was Kona One -much heavier and less livier then Kona 11,5. K 11,5 is like bigger freeride board
why all this hassle? waterstart clew first, ride back to the beach. riding clew first is basic skill. you are lucky that the rear end did not break
What board is that ?
It is Exocet Kona 11,5' (now Exocet x-longboard) a very versatile board ( I own 6 boards and if I had to reduce their number I would choose this one to stay)
La verdad es que era más simple llegar a la costa navegando aún sin botavara.
nice watch.

Leeride ? 🤙
With that piece of hope I would just tie the two parts of the boom with a clove hitch knot..Easy..and fast
True, I didn't think about it. Good idea! (and nobody had suggested it before in comments)
Do the turtle. Remove the U-joint, lay down on the board with the sail on top, inside the boom and swim back.
Infatti non capivo all'inizio cosa volessi fare???Cambia mure & go
mec cela aurai été plus simple de démonter ton grément et de la mettre sur ta planche, je pense aussi que tes bout de harnai était mal réglé
just use the other side or clew first
Aren't you worried about sharks?
+NebraskaWindsurfer
You must be joking, right? -there are no sharks in the Baltic sea!
If you are, you don't go windsurfing in the first place. LOL.
I mean rope
bring your head before going into the water nene
