Does your dog enjoy hunting rats? 😂🤣 #bullterrierthings
Yes 😀 and he's also a bull terrier . And after he gets so excited that he has to do a bully run .
Mice. I have yorkies.
Do your guys dog chase your rc car?
1 would absolutely run away and the other one would catch it and wouldn't give it to you 😅
I own a GSD with a really high prey drive Rats, Mice and the occasional possum are all on her list usually they stay up high on the fence just out of her reach but she’s managed to nab a rat on the ground that just couldn’t make the fence faster than her. Currently every night is spent smelling for them she’s only 2yrs old
after building my first kit id say its the best way to get to know a car, i know everything fits together, how long certain repairs will take, what i need to remove to do what. it instills pure confidence
But when you buy a used one you have to rebuild it, so it's kinda the same.
@@johnc1666 I bought a used TLR 22 5.0 and it´s total not the same 😅 I´m sitting in germany and it was really hard to get a new one for almost a year. So i try to find a used on in good conditions. What can i say... When the car arrived the situation was total different. The pictures and the text told my it was a car in good conditions....🤣 So i had a car in not that good condition 😁 And there was a lot of non TLR Parts used 😅 In that case you have to struggle with wrong parts, cheap parts, defectiv parts and wrong mounted parts. If you are a beginner in the hobby you defenitly better with a new car because it´s less frustrating to get into having fun 😋
The rule for buying used is what the new price is cut it in half. This can give you better leverage for repairs. Also most racers dump 100's of $'s in after market parts. That can also be a big bonus. Site unseen can definitely be difficult but always make sure to ask for as many pictures as you can get. Just like relationships they can show a lot of red flags. Sometimes, you can manage to get extras thrown in like servos, or spare parts, extra bidies, wheels and tires, etc..
Just buy used from people you know or are in your racing community
I love buying used cars, i find killer deals all the time.
Used on ebay, i dunno, but used, at the track, where you can check the vehicle over, you can generally check all of this… wiggle some arms, and wheels and all that… check for slop, everywhre.
these are all of the tings that i wish i had known! now i find myself replacing everything part by part. i fell like if like if i had just been smart about it i would have a fresh new kit. instead of having to replacing everything less then a month after purchasing a used buggy
Used-New does exist also. I found a "used" 8x elite kit with all the parts still in the sealed bags for $140 under the new price. They are rare but do exist and might be worth the effort if you are planning on spending that kind of money.
I just bought a truck that was setup already and only ran twice. All it needed was an rx/tx. Guy walked into the hobby store and said hey I need to sell this and I said sold lol
Also, as in any hobby, there probably are a lot of RC-vehicles a person has bought, tried a few times and decided they don't like the hobby and sell the practically new equipment. I have had some bargains on other equipment like bicycles that way, I assume they exixst in RC too.
Put a straight edge on the chassis to check for tweak. Just because there aren't scratches doesn't mean it's not bent.
Super smart my guy
Arrma left the chat
I would only recommend buying used if you are experienced in the rc hobby, definitely buy new if it's your first rc car.
Great advice!
I would say the opposite, buy second hand for a first car. It’s going to take awhile to learn the ropes so if you can buy a car that’s just out of date it will still be really competitive and you will never reach its limits, and you can pick them up for like £150 rather than the £300 they retailed at
@@ad2332 I've bought a few used cars. One from a local champ at SS, and he really hooked me up with spares, tires, etc. Car was cheap, then I proceeded to blow my budget on servo, speed control, etc.
@@ad2332 I get what your saying but as a new person to the rc hobby they might not know what to look for even the fact that there are videos telling you otherwise, yes they might save $100 or so but do they know how to fix it and how what it will cost, in the end I always find myself just regretting the purchase because I could've spent like $100 more on a brand new car that is up to date on parts and specs.
Good point though 👍🏻
I bought my first car used rtr, for me it was the good choice. When you know nothing about the hobby, assembly, setup, tires, shocks, batteries, diff and gearing etc I think used from the right person is the way to go. They are gonna take a beating for a while anyway. So get a used one, learn to drive, learn a little maintenence, then when you're ready, build a new car. Just my humble Newby opinion. 😁
Hi Ryan appreciate the videos you have been doing, a ton of good information I wish I had when I first started . I'm just hoping someday I'll run into to you at the track and just pick at all that information you got!! I mostly run astro and carpet!! It's kinda the only way, year round up in Maine !!!
Great video Ryan it helped a lot to understand.
Used prices are so high these day it's hard to find something worth buying used. Save up a little more cash and start fresh. At least you know what you're getting.
I couldn't say it better myself.
Used rc prices now in days is full blown retail, and some cases over retail.
I think just buy new.
You are 100% right.
Thanks for the video. Just recently bought an old RC10GT2 and XXX-NT AD2. On a nitro kick lately and I missed out on the preorder for the Ignite conversion. Half the fun is restoring the great legacy models. Cheers!
Great video great information my experience with used RC was everything you just explained I had to go through and figure out problems and everything loose or damaged needs to be replaced. Always buy from a trusted source.
I just sold mine as used and it's near mint with a tonne of parts. My track closed and didn't want a shelf queen. If you want to get started it's not a bad way to go. Key points look for racing cars, not bashed cars. Used bashers are usually.... well bashed! I would recommend rebuild shocks as you don't know what oil is in them. I have sold my used cars for like half of what I paid for the kit. Not everyone can afford new. Cheers
I've got a few pretty good deals on used RC's, but it can be a real crapshoot if you don't know what to look for. One thing you didn't touch on, if you're buying a non current production model, make sure the manufacturer still sells enough parts to keep it going well into the future, or at least make sure you can stock up on some of the essentials before they're out of stock everywhere. That really goes for any older RC that you run though. Last summer I let a friends kit try out my nearly new Associated B44, and he broke a front arm. I had no idea those were so hard to find now, and that car is now definitely off the loaner list.
Great video. You should have mentioned parts availability too. Keep up the great work
My son and I both run the same brand/model xray xb2. Both of our cars were new kits he built his I built mine. It allows you to learn the car but we also purchased a used setup xb2 with tons of spares. I broke the whole car down and now we have a spare for everything that can brake for waaaay less than buying each piece individually
Perfect timing! Just picked up a used 22 5.0 AC. I'm new to the racing scene and this was exactly what I was looking for. Discovered your channel no too long ago and got into the hobby from a co-worker. They've helped a lot!
Keep up the good work! Also give your doggo some pets for me plz.
Used can be good, especially if you pick a car up from one of the top racers or team drivers at a local track, usually they are spec’d pretty well.
If you really want a money pit get into the vintage rc scene (cars pre 1998). I’m running a Losi XX & a Schumacher Cat 2000ec, keeping vintage cars running and hunting spare parts out is a labour of love lol
Ik your comment is 3 months old now but I agree! I got a kyosho inferno us sports I put a Alpha 28 on it (I blew up the GXR 28) and race speced it 👌🏻
If you are on a budget and are looking to buy used, best thing you can do is get in touch with one of the local racers that is fast and has a great maintenance program. You can always tell who they are. Cars are always mint and they are usually the same guys that get a new car at least every season. They are usually super cool about hooking up the locals with quality used cars for prices that still save you some money. Those same people are also great sources for used spares.
I suggest to only get a used model if you get a good enough deal to where you can turn around and sell it for your money back or for profit. I just bought a used mbx7r eco and I’m super happy with it. I asked the seller for plenty of photos and videos and he seemed to care about the car as much as I plan on caring for it too. I’ve had good experiences buying a couple used rc’s but I think from here on out, I will be buying new. I don’t want to test my luck any longer. Plus, there’s nothing like a brand new rc
Just recently picked up a losi 8 nitro for 150$. Ended up getting really lucky as the guy was completely getting out of racing and gave me everything; tires, tools, left over kit parts etc definitely going to be a lot better than a losi buggy rtr
Thanks again keep the information flowing!
Great video, as always. Thank you, Ryan. I would only and do only buy a used car if it is something special or rare like a vintage car, something that you'd like to restore - and/or if it is a donor car, for parts. Not for economic reasons, as you explained (really well).
You really are the man Ryan. You covered damn near everything, racing for 25 years I’ve bought a few used rides, and being as thorough as we have to be to have a consistent race car, I’ve spent more than it would have cost for a new kit almost every time. Bearings, shock rebuilds, diff rebuilds, arms, hinge pins, hardware, and the “options” (hopefully if you bought the used kit you got one that had a bunch of options on it) gets expensive. But sometimes we have to learn from our experiences with them. Thanks for the content brother!
I've lucked out myself. I just snatched up a complete racing Losi set 22 3.0 buggy T and SCT that was used but the owner liked good equipment all have tekin r5 pro brushless sensored systems..
I bought a b6 used came with a motor and esc got it from a guy I’ve known for 10 years I chose used because I did not know 1 how I would do racing 2 if I will enjoy racing 3 even if I was to get a brand new car I would not have the self control not to upgrade as many parts as I could
Ps love the video
I just did the same thing a few days ago. Picked up a used RB6.1D at my local race track/hobby shop. Came with 17.5 motor, esc, and savox servo. I would hope that the owner of one of the longest running tracks in the country would do folks right and only take in vehicles that are in pretty good condition, to sell to his support. So, in my case, I give the benefit of the doubt and feel like I got a great deal on a supported "Team" product at his place as well. And your first two points, I feel exactly the same way.
If you decide to buy used, don't buy sight unseen. the picture you see on ebay, fb or what other site, doesn't mean that is the actual rc you will be receiving. Go to swap meets, buy from a friend or at least a place you can drive to ( within reason ) to see the rc. I think most 1st time buyers won't be buying roller rc's, they'll want the electronics already installed. So if you are buying used, are the electronics any good? IMPO, if you are a 1st time buyer, buy new, period. Even a new rc needs to be gone through to make sure the fluid levels are good, tighten screws (adding lock tight ) so forth and so on, so you'll be getting to know your rc anyway. I also recommend watching a lot of video's on the rc you plan on buying. Read the forum's. Is the rc you plan on buying a reliable rc? Does it break a lot? How much are the parts? ( scale size matters when it comes to price, my 5th scale dbxl-e 2.0 parts are very expensive compared to my brothers 8th scale kraton 6s blx v5) What's the availability of parts? (you might get them in a few days or it could be months) So before you buy new or used, are you prepared to put the money and time into maintaining and repairing the rc? It can be a very expensive hobby.
YES buy new if you can. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve bought used stuff and regretted it. Sometimes it has cost me more than a new car
Really dig all these tips you are giving! My first purchase was a used Slash that came with a few extras. Not knowing what I know now, sent me to my local Hobby Town a few times for some wear items. Love all of your content and happy racing/bashing/wrenching to everyone! 🤘🏁🏆🔥🧨
I learn a wealth of knowledge every video, thank's so much for all the time you put in to them!
Awesome tips. I over time have been learning what to do and change. I only race on a club level but am terrible about maintence. Love my 22t that i converted from 1.0 to 2.0 and run rear motor.
Love your dog!… English bull terriers are the best. 👍🏻👍🏻
Hi Ryan , great to see a other Bull-Terrier lover in the RC fans . My Bull-Terriers are crazy about playing with the RC Cars . From crawling to fast buggies. Keep Up the good videos .... Greetings from Spain. :-)
Love your content. Love your dog. If you ever find your way to nw Washington area I know a really awesome track you could visit
In my opinion. I would recommend to only by a used car if you are saving over 150 bucks, or if you are buying something cool and vintage, (like me trying to find a vintage Traxxas Hawk 2 and TRX 3) that you are not going to really race.
But that's the beauty of the hobby you can do what you want.
Thanks for the info as always! I’m still very thankful for the b3.1 I got from you man and it’s been awesome to me! Very cool to watch while going over a used t3.1. Thanks again man!
I bought 50:50 New/used(already built). The kits were definately the better experience! The two rollers i bought used were sold as serviced and 'well maintained'. Yes... after I rebuilt them anyways.
The first roller i mainly bought for parts, so everything ok, price was a steal too.
second roller i bought with the intend to get racing again. should have rebuild it completely (not partially like i did). Loose screws, broken a block, etc... replaced and upgraded many things.
If you can, buy new kits!
I wanted to take on a project somewhat like this. I wanted to start with a 22s SCT RTR which is rear motor and upgrade it bit by bit up to a race truck. Im guessing I could borrow parts from the SCT 3.0 🤷🏻♂️🥃🤙🏼
I got one recently that the droop was uneven and it was driving me nuts trying to find the issue. The original owner had two different length shock rod ends on it so the shock length was different but wasn't showing up in the shaft length measurement. So weird as there weren't tuning parts with it and that's a really odd part to have to replace. TBH if you're racing I don't think I'd ever buy one you can't inspect in person. Also make sure they have and send all the tuning parts that came with it. Thinks like block inserts get expensive if every time you want to make a change you find you're missing a block, or a shim, etc that is in the manual.
I bought a used 1/8th scale and dumped so much money in parts to get that thing looking good. I def should have just bought a new kit.
I bought a team associated b6.2 off a buddy and ran it and it wasn't bad. But next time I will get a kit deff a TLR
I bought a used buggy off of Facebook market place. The chassis to replace was 130 bucks brand new but it was a complete carbon fiber chassis and it also was a discontinued buggy. So I ended up buying a team associated b74.1d
I got an rc10b4 for free when I bought a rustler for my girlfriend. I didn't know what it was and neither did the guy that gad it. Same thing happened with a tc3 I got a while ago. Love used stuff sometimes.
My American Bulldog Bluetick beagle mix who loves hunting rats are first and moles it's kind of funny watching them go for a mole, good tips
And if you are buy a used car that has motor/ servos stuff like that. Always always always replace servo saver/horn and inspect replace motor bearings.
I just bought a tekno Sct410.3, was told it was refreshed, and race ready. It took $100 in replacement parts to fix what I found broke, wore out, or missing all together. It was a good deal but not it's just a mediocre deal
Great concept for video Ryan. A lot of people are put off by the cost of new cars.
Every so often! There are used cars for sale at OCRC! These car's are usually in very good condition!
I'd only suggest buying used if there is still factory parts support for the vehicle. Trying to rebuild some of my old associated cars has been a nightmare.
Nice video, are we going to have a rebuild vid on the 22? I’ve just built a Kyosho rb6.6 in rear motor and they are such fine to drive! Took me back to the B4 era
I will probably do an overview video just before heading to the track
I been in "hobby grade" since '86 and I will buy a used RC if I know the seller AND personally witnessed the use and maintenance. Other than that no, absolutely not. My first was a Pegasus buggy that I got at a pawn shop at age 14. Every part of the car was completely wore out and if you were able to achieve a 12 minute battery run without stopping to work on something it was a miracle. My next car was a Tamiya Lunch Box monster van and it was so much more enjoyable because it was new and I put it together.
Dear Ryan,
A good video. I do not agree 100% with the statement, but in principle you are right. I believe that a beginner in the scene can also compete in the "first" races with a used one. Because at the beginning, in the first RC races, you struggle as a beginner less with the hardware than with everything else.
Basically I agree with you and yes, if you show a failure with a used RC car, it can end up being more expensive than a new kit.
I shared the video on my homepage, under the section that deals with "used cars".
Thanks in any case for this great video.
Best regards
"Beside the Race"
#besidetherace
never have bought a new RC car out of the 30+ cars I purchased some were a good deal most were not and had the bad habit of restoring them back to factory new condition and always spent more then it would have cost for a new car
Hey Ryan I race my 1/10 buggies on big outdoor 1/8 scale tracks and would love for you to make a video on setup tips for that!! Yes low traction and sending it with a 5.5 to make all the jumps the Ebuggies do ...lol
Just bought a used losi 22 and it looks almost identical to the one shown. Quite funny
I must buy new , i dont like the suprise :) and i love a new and clean car
Awesome video.....I've bought used cars from a rc sight.....cars are in a little better shape....and the people are racers.....be careful....I got ripped off once....but paypal helped me out in a big way....
We run the new layback cars at an old school style loam track
Ryan never fails to impress me. Love your videos brother. Keep it up :) You gonna be at the track for Roar E Nationals?
Honestly even buying a used car you are likely to be into it for the price of a new one because of replacing parts. But parts will probably be upgraded. The important part is that the chassis is in good condition. Wearable parts will probably need replaced on a used car
Balanced view and great knowledge. Thanks for sharing.
bought a basher (arrma fury) for a buck fifty, first time buying an rc, I got to say I got rip off, all 4 shocks were different, the diff. was all screwed up, motor was way to powerful and esc didn't match it....learn my lesson for sure. And now it's time to get rite of it, no more part to find.
I enjoyed your video I’m impress. I’m trying to sell 1/5 &6 scale RTR They are stock with all original parts. I played with them on a school parking lot A few times. What would you suggest the best way to sell them? I have the Losey DBXLE, the Traxxas X max and the Traxxas XO1 all in pretty much excellent condition
I bought a used 1/10 truggy online to convert into another vehicle, and it looked alright in the pictures, but when I received it every plastic piece was stripped. I had to replace a lot of plastic that I still needed and ended up spending more than what a new kit cost 😭
Thx for the awesome tips!
Hi Ryan, I posted a question on one of your older vids, just wanted to know what charging leads you use? Thank you. P.S. I enjoy your videos! Keep up the good work!
Lmao yep a new get old and either use or new all parts can brake and need be replaced with the multiple price they cost. My last vehicle I bought all new parts and downloaded the manual so it was a great fun day to build it. After all when need to change parts you know what you do too. Cheers 🍻
I wish there was a (vs) video out there showing us a 1/10 buggy driving around a track with way to much toe in vs wayy to much toe out cornering then same with camber obviously way to much positive and negative to show what they do then with maxed out ride hight vs slammed to the ground
most racers that are selling a roller to upgrade to the next new model are usually in pretty good shape because they constantly replace parts to stay competitive. USUALLY, lol
I found a tlr 22 5.0 Roller for sale at my local hobby shop. Everything is tight bearings are good
and there's no scratches on the Chassis at all still don't know if it's worth it at 150 what do you think it's my step in to racing to see if it's something I will enjoy
Chrome coated shock shaft would be the best… why is that not a thing..? Titanium coating sounds cooler than it works in my usage.
Hey Ryan, i am a rc newbie and enjoy all your videos. Your explanations are very usefull for me. I own a Yokomo yz2 cal3 and tried to get setup ideas from the super secret website but i t only shows "The requested URL was not found on this server." Any idea whats going on? Is there a link to a setup page? Greets from germany!! Keep up the good work
Every single one of my nitro cars are second hand, you don't need to buy a new one in my opinion you gotta work on them a little bit but, for the most part if you do it yourself it dosnt cost all that much and you learn too
I like your style - Greetings from Germany!
Greetings! Thanks for stopping by :D
@@RyanHarrisRC Greetings from Belgium too :) You rule
@Ryan Harris, if you dont mind me asking, what is it that you store on that small cooler behind you? I could almost say they look like drum sticks lol.
Also don't trust the seller to list the car accurately. That isn't a TLR 22 2.0, that is a 1.0.
2.0s have an extra hole in the chassis under the forward rear pivot block (aka. c-block), they have silver/grey colored Ti-Carbonitride shock shafts, and they don't use e-clips on the rear hub hinge pins.
How about the UA-camrs claiming they are buying ebay barn finds and those listing were never on EBAY. Doesn't hurt to clean the pubic hair out of the suspension when you take the pictures.
I troll Ebay every morning for the hobby of searching for good deals and never see what these youtubers make videos on.
there are way better deals on craigslist and FB marketplace.
@@Heathcliff_hensel FB marketplace is always good but Craigslist is just flat out overpriced junk, my point of the comment is there are many youtubers claiming to be buying cars on ebay and they are not.....
normally with not buying used, but when I got offered a RC8B3.1 roller for $150 I couldn't turn that down...
Well, that was totally discouraging, lol! I see what you're saying but there are plenty of good deals out there. Buy from reputable sellers (check feedback) or from people in your rc community (that you know or others can vouch for). That being said, if you show up and the car is filthy and/or looks like it hasn't been serviced, just walk away - you're buying somebody else's problems!
My first used rc was a bomber bought it for a great price but regretted it right away. Everything was kind of thrown together and all the electronics started failing right away
My two rules to only buying used.. buy used if it’s dirt cheap and buy used if it’s vintage and/or rare.
If you buy a buggy to race and it’s still available for sale new, you’ll get the buggy for $200 then spend $150+ to refresh it.. might as well get it new or the newest version available
Agreed! Now if only TLR would remake some of those epic XX platforms...
@@RyanHarrisRC do you own a XX? Well worth hunting one out on eBay. Mine hit the track last week for the first time in 20 years the other week, forgot how great it was to drive. I’m on the look out for a XX4 now
@@RyanHarrisRC they still make the replacement bulkhead that always broke. the place is called OLDRC.com
They have an AKC even called barn hunt where you can win titles for your dog by hunting rats. Our poodle has competed several times.
Shocks are a real gamble
The only time I feel it’s worth buying a used car is too try a new class or your just learning. Once you get to true competition level, like you said, buy a new kit. If you run associated you do that anyway every 6 months.
Nice shirt! I have one just like it. HAHA thanks for the great vids. keep them coming.
Did you mentioned the main gear and slipper clutch ? 😝
I've found it to be fairly safe to buy used on-road cars, meanwhile used "bashers" are usually not the best idea.
I stopped buying new cars, because at the end of the day. They will get scratched and scuffed anyways. I always only look out for shocks and diffs. I've won races with my tenacity shortcourse and learned to replace the shocks with tlr shocks and tlr dogbones and cvd. Thats why shocks is important. Also, you don't need a $100 servo. The $56 powerhobby brushless servo haven't failed me. Never buy a servo that has too many features you wont use. End of the day, its about having fun, and its no fun to spend big and break anyways.
Have you raced at longavile rc complex before
You have a bull terrier and I want one so bad.
Depends on the hobbyist
12:10 The driveshaft or dogbone has some movement. Do you consider that bone in the shot bent and in need of replacement or strait and useable?
You have no idea how fast I clicked
You gonna do some videos on rebuilding it?
What would be the process of using moo clean and moo slick?
Bought my car and found out they where using suspension balls for the shock to sit in as hinge pin inserts wondering why I was getting weird toe in and out on the rear 🤣🤣🤣🤣 replaced and sorted had them in the spares aswell wat the hell
