  • So the Villiers that came from the scrap heap. Its getting saved from certain death. In the extra length video we get the oil sump back on. Ignition timing set and flywheel refitted, Valves ground in and cylinder head refitted. And a complete clean down. Also a replacement carb is stripped and cleaned in a ultrasonic bath and also refitted to the engine.

according to the Mk10/12 manual, its part number M.2788E Grommet (H.T. Lead).
    Great video.
I rescued it off my friends scrap heap as he was going to chuck it in the skip. When I saw the head bolts loose I doubted it was much use but would be a good source of spares for you. over the moon to see it being restored. Sybil watched the video fixated to the screen.
When you do that trick with the sand paper to get a flat surface, I always recommend using a piece of flat metal plate if you have a bit.
    Keep up the good work.

great video ,if i remember correctly from my school days in the metal work class you heated the copper till it turned a bluish colour and quenched it in water to anneal it

Yeah. Because it's got a paper or compound centre I didn't want to get it that hot. It's seems to have sealed up tho. 😀

    Softening metal is called 'Annealing'.
Proper annealing needs the metal to be heated above its re-crystallisation temperature for at least several minutes. Copper should be quenched in cold water after heating.
However, quenching steel after heating will make it harder. Steel should be air cooled gently to make it softer.

Watched it right to the end!
What are these things called? - My dad always referred to them as 'acorns' just like the nuts that fall out of oak trees!
Yep, I reckon you've been watching a bit of Taryl? - Hillbilly machining indeed! "Grass rats, yeeooww". "And that's the way to fix yer carbitrator"!!
So we'll be seeing this one puttering away next time we see it?
    "And there's yer dinner......!"👍🍛

🤣🤣🤣🤣. Yeah been watching Taryl and Mustie1 for years now.
Do get ideas off other channels I must say. I will try look up ignition acorns 🤣🤣.. x

Thanks for a very entertaining video. For the HT lead connection you need an Acorn Nut. I know they come in different sizes, many of my early cars had them on the dizzy caps and coils. After you slide the Acorn Nut onto the HT lead and strip the inner wire, there should be a small copper split washer about 5/16" which slides over the HT lead wire core and then you fan the strands to wire out like a daisy flower to retain the washer. The wire and copper washer then gets pressed against the magneto HT stud when you tighten down the Acorn Nut. Hope that's clear...
Re. the gaskets, I have a selection of steel balls robbed from bearings and use them for the studs holes and minor round holes in hand made gaskets. I find it best to tap the small holes in, before cutting round the edges of the gasket because they hold the gasket nicely in place.
You were a bit impetus with that fan nut... I was screaming at the screen not to do it!! LOL

Best way I found to make gaskets. Sounds strange but it do depend much on the quality of the gasket paper.

Hi Fenn, I noticed quite a bit of lateral movement on those valves so she isn't going to run for very long unless you replace those valve guides.
