The Nissan Skyline GTR originally started back in 1969, and from the beginning, this car was one to look out for. But fast forward 16 years and this car came back with a vengeance. It was only in 2002 that the Skyline GTR would cease production and simply become a thing of the past. In this video we dive in to find out exactly why and exactly what happened to the Gozilla of cars, the Nissan Skyline GTR.

Next GTR will be either hybrid or electric and wont take inspiration from previous gens. The GTR is all about performance and isnt really designed with esthetics in mind unlike the Z aka flagship car
When i first saw 2F2F, I legit thought i could find an R34 randomly in the middle of the desert covered in dust for cheap like that in the US. 😂 if only..
And here we all thought Vin Diesel catching a falling engine block with one hand while pinning a guy down with another was the most unrealistic thing in the FF movies.

Let me tell you what happened in quick context. R34 Skyline GTR went from $50k to $200k and the R32 Sykline GTT went from $18k to $50k.
I remember walking to school back in 1998, in Wellington NZ. There was a car dealership on my way to school. They sold modified cars, GTR’s r32 33 and 34, evo’s 3,4 and 5. Heaps of sti’s and many more. But I remembered seeing a r34 gtr nur spec v for at least 34k. Lol now it’s over the roof. It’s crazy to think these cars are being sold for the same price and a brand new lambo hah

Honestly it makes sense tho. bcs originally skyline was a luxury sedan and is GTR is the sportier version. It makes sense that nissan separated the current GTR (R35) and the current Skyline sedan (400R). I know the skyline trademarks are those round tailights. But both cars are still really good and im not complaining.

The current gen Skyline (under the Infiniti Q50 badge) has been dominating the past 2 seasons of the British Touring Car Championship. If people are nostalgic for the time when ‘Godzilla’ specifically meant ‘Skyline’, they should watch the BTCC. That thing with Ash Sutton behind the wheel is a real sight to see.
Godzilla never meant skyline. Godzilla was r32 GTR. Skylines in general are garbage. The GTR trim is all that ever mattered.
@@nismoR32GTR I meant it in the causal sense in which it’s commonly used these days. I’m fully aware that the current Skyline/Q50 has very little performance capabilities, but the NGTC touring car really has that ‘Godzilla’ spirit to it. Watch it in action; it’s brilliant
@@theocousins6386 the current Q50/Skyline (for a non GTR) has the most performance capabilities since the start. its still a easily tunable twin turbo v6 that can make great power, the letdown is the chassis and transmission for a sport sedan its okay, not meant to be a racecar, but the skyline from the beginning was never meant to be that in the first place. The GTR trim was the high performance version. And obviously Nissan divided the Skyline and GTR into its own separate entity in 2008.
@@q6_zilla Again, I’m speaking in general terms here. Compared to a regular sports car, the Q50 doesn’t have much going for it. I’m more fixated upon motorsport than the tuner scene, hence the nature of my comment.
@@theocousins6386 yeah its definitely not a sports car in any shape or form. Its expected though, with the new Z having the VR30 the powerplant is finally getting a sports car it needed.

you will feel find one eventually, but your best bet is importing one yourself. make sure you do research on importing incase you dont know how it works.

The chances are getting lower and lower for the r34 gtt even here in Japan. Unless of course you don’t mind getting the 4 door version then it’s not too difficult to find

I would say one thing, not all Skylines were GTR's most of them weren't that alone made it more special like the ZR1 vs a regular Corvette Fast and furious just made it legendary. The new GTR became its own thing and not only that it went up market. so now it's like yeah it needs to perform like that. and the fact it now competing with the vette or it did when it first came out. i mean GM was gunning for the GTR with their Z06/Z07 package and ZR1. I think that just stole a lot of its thunder and well Toyota wasn't really making anything to compete with it either.

I believe the car in the thumbnail was a GT-T, it was for sale in the Netherlands this year. I could be wrong. I also own a GT-T and the kit looked fantastic that's why I remember.

I’d assume it’d unfortunately be nearly impossible due to all the new restrictions and standards since the 34 came out :( safety standards alone probably make that whole body style ineligible as a new car today

Idk there’s something about the car that has always attracted me, I know it’s not the fastest or coolest looking but for me I just have like an emotional connection I guess to the car? This is why people hate that new "integra". Acura can use the same recipe and ingredients but it don't taste the same.
If I'm being honest. While the Skyline/g37 share the same frame but a different badge I would still consider it a skyline. The skyline itself was just a sedan or coupe and the GTR was that high end performance model. I love both of them alot so with or without the badge the skyline and GTR names will always be top of my list
You not being honest, but factual. A G37 is just a USDM Skyline. Same with the G35 being a rebadged V35, and the Q40/50/60 being rebadged V37 Skyline.
The r32 gtr prices other price increases for Japanese cars like this make me lean more towards looking for a classic car again vs a 90s Japanese counterpart

Kinda disappointed that the market for these skyline gtr's are no longer attainable. Some even are fetching close or more than a brand-new R35.
Why is r36 taking so long . Or is it going to be a r40.
The current gtr just doesn’t give you the same feeling as the old skyline or even stagea’s, yes it’s got the power and capability. But it lost a lot of the platforms characteristic that make it the car it is. As the owner of a heavily modified gts-t the r35 just doesn’t have the same feeling when driving as even the non gtr r32-34’s have.

Saw somebody call the R35 the Skyrim/GTA V of super cars and that could not be more accurate
R33 GTR all the way!
They made it a boring v6 and gave up on body design, so it looked like a refrigerator, but they released a 60k car (for a year or two) that worked as long as you didn't launch control it and gave supercars a run for their money. Now it costs upwards of 140k and you can get a porche 911 carerra 4s or a Jaguar F-type SVR for about the same money that are probably faster with better looks, interior, and engineering. Nissan is so terrified of people realizing the GTR would lose against the 4s and the SVR they have to practically blackmail autopress into not doing side by side comparisons, so any time you see a matchup they either place it against much more expensive cars or much less capable cars so that they can call it a draw.

GTR has become a meme, at least as far as I'm concerned. Yeah, it's a great car but in my area GTR owners are the most pretentious self-absorbed and conceited people you will ever encounter, bar none. Johnny Tran looks like a humble and easy going friendly guy by comparison. You can walk up to a GTR owner (ANY GTR, classic, R35, you name any iteration of GTR you can throw out there) and compliment the car...
"Dude! That's a nice one! You jumped in at the perfect time to own a GTR, they're skyrocketing in value!"
All you'll get is them leaning back against their car and "Tch! Whatever. What you got?"
"Classic Camaro. It's quick but nothing crazy."
"I'll smoke you." then they motion to the GTR insignia. "GTR."
"Well, yeah, you got a lot of work done to your car and I don't really race anymore. I've never had the reflexes."
"Tch! Get a GTR and get good. GTR is perfection."
"I know they're good. Hey! I have a friend with a 700 horsepower classic Vette, too. Gone turbo."
"Doesn't matter! GTR."
"How much you got?"
"400to the wheels. Doesn't matter if you have 700 horsepower. Because (motions to the grille), GTR. When the GTR kicks in yo, you're smoked. Get out of my sight non-GTR owner. You're beneath me!"
I know. GTR is God. GTR is Godzilla. Jesus and Zeus drive GTRs. A bone stock GTR with a simple reprogramming puts out 1000 horsepower which is the REAL reason they were not allowed to be imported.
If a GTR fell into my lap right now I'd turn it down, just because I don't want to be associated with people who have a bigger head and false sense of self importance than a retired Ferrari owner.

i think the r35 is great, but i dont like how nissan is leaning into the luxury category and should stay in performance/tuning. car guys dont care about luxury and this will keep the price down

Us tuner guys with the means to provide for one of these dont care about nice leathers and plush interiors. I feel like im Old school though. What happened to the blitz 03
Skylines gtrs have nothing that makes them fast in stock form. Their chassis is like butter and it rusts and breaks like a tissue paper.
Yet this is the most perfect car you can own when they are in the right price range, they have heaps of parts so then it becomes a supercar with your datsun chassis on top and nobody would notice, to make it fast and reliable you must throw 80% of the nissan away and just keep the chassis and body. Which is awesome because all aftermarket companies compete to hell and back to make new parts for the car every year just to be the best aftermarket engineering company in the market. No other platform car gets that honor! Everyone wants the GTR to be their test mule and technology showcase. And the parts keep coming this means this car will never die and keeps getting better every year.
And the suspension geometry is out of this world. It handles like a ww2 fighter jet in stock form, with all the power and aftermarket parts its just a kamikaze that can win ww3 if it takes place on the road.
My opinion though is the RB25 GTT or GTST feels faster, quicker and agile in stock form with slight upped boost because its lighter and less wheels to move. I couldn’t sleep the first day i drove it so much that I bought it. And it sits on jack stands to this day because aftermarket parts and fabrication on these cars can bankrupt you for months.
I will sell Santa Claus to Mark Zuckerberg, then robbed him , then sell him to Jeff Bezos, then rob him to get a GTR #GettingThese2021
