I think there many MANY actors who could do this role with just as much emotional impact, vocal talent etc. you’re just thinking of actors you know…but the amount of unseen folks with incredible artistic skill who simply haven’t had the opportunities because people like Ben platt are seen as “ticket sellers” would surprise you.

I don't think anyone was complaining about him during the stage version, only for the movie - even then, I think it was more of the fact that they made him look even more off with the hair, makeup and wardrobe choices in the film. He was about 28 when the film was released, which is actually not an uncommon age for adults portraying teenagers in film or TV. Grease (Olivia-Newton John), Mean Girls (Rachel McAdams), Never Have I Ever (Darren Barnet), and so many other more examples, yet Ben got bashed unfairly. It wasn’t really about his age but more of his appearance I think
It feels so weird to hear this very anxious and lonely kid have such a powerful voice, but the actors who play Evan always deliver on both parts, and something about that is just amazing.
He should practice his pitch… Also, musical songs sound weird when the sound is coming from the microphone instead of being in a theater, cause there’s echo/reverb through the mic, which means you gotta focus on pitch even more.
His poor voice. You can tell it’s tired, yet he’s still slaying this song. He’s also a great storyteller. I feel connected to what he’s saying when he sings. Can’t wait to see the movie.

He hits that high note on "waving" much better and more consistently now in falsetto, he was really skrelting back then.
I love his last "waouhhhhhh." It's so emotional and addictive. No one can sing this song as well as Ben Platt. It's just splendid.

This performance compared to the movie, Evan seems more awkward and nervous but in the movie he just doesn’t know how to talk to people his anxiety is so bad and debilitating and seems more sad and less just awkward.

He's 22 here and much better suited for the role, it's true he sounds great now but he's 28 and while they tried to make him look 17 again he looks 45, which in his defense is young for trees but still
I’ve seen some incredible singers and performers play Evan Hansen. But NOBODY will EVER be able to top Ben Platt. He was born to play this role.

I made a lyric video for this song. I really like the message and it speaks the truth "if you're falling in a forest and there's no body around did you ever really crash or even make a sound?" because the truth is it is the people in our lives that give it meaning. Being alone is no fun.

Probably to show that for someone with social anxiety, it's so much easier to procure thoughts then to actually execute conversations.
You'd be surprised how music let us, people with social anxiety --even as bad as this--, express ourselves in ways no other thing could. So yeah, this is not as impossible as you may think.

I have anxiety, but Evans' seems very exaggerated. I mean, I can easily talk myself into a corner because my words could become nonsensical....but the way Evan talks is literally nothing I've ever seen before.
barbaro267 his anxiety is portrayed as severe as it is to show how severe it can get. I know people who are actually worse than Evan in terms of anxiety. As a person with severe anxiety, I find his preformance very relatable.
Of course, they have to exaggerate a little for show.

He really nails the social anxiety part of his character. The way he moves his eyes and rushes the way he talks when he talks to zoe is incredible. I have minor social anxiety, which is weird because I'm an extrovert, but I get really nervous when I talk to people. So I relate.

Andrea G if you listen and watch you can definitely hear he isn't very musically talented naturally and had to probably work his ass off to hit notes and sound good look how much he's focusing when he goes for the falsetto in the first verse and at the end where he has to sing those high notes

He's actually one of the most talented Broadway singers I've experienced in a very long time. If you watch other videos of him, it's pretty clear that high notes and falsetto are no issues for him whatsoever. If he seems to strain a bit here, it's probably just fatigue and nerves.

It's not an easy thing to do, I'm a Baritone and I can sing this and hit the notes.
You need a hell of a lot of space in your mouth and your throat. Also a lot of support otherwise you ain't getting to those notes.

Amazingly, it sounds like the cast recording debuted on the Billboard Top 200 even higher than Hamilton (the Hamilton cast recording debuted after its first week at #12, while DEH debuted at #8)!! I knew DEH was really popular, but the fact that it's THAT level of popular makes me so happy
Ricardo Ayala um, the show may have been wrotten in 2015 but it didn't premiere on Broadway until December 2016, so, no it absolutely did not blow up in 2015. It was just at a tiny theater in DC in 2015....
Jacqui Smith Just because it was at a tiny theatre does not mean it wasn't popular. Like Hamilton, The Humans, etc., DEH was very popular in the broadway world when it was off broadway. Once it finally moved to broadway it was discovered by a lot of musical theater people, making it more well known.

I just saw this show today. I was in tears by the second song. Depending on how the season develops, Ben Platt deserves at the very least a Tony nomination. I walked out at the end of the show and walked right up to the box office to purchase another ticket.

Ben's voice is SO powerful in person - it's unreal how he can control the different emotions he portrays throughout these songs and somehow sing with the voice of an angel
