Field Marshal Sam Hormusji Framji Jamshedji Manekshaw, (3 April 1914 - 27 June 2008), widely known as Sam Manekshaw and Sam Bahadur ("Sam the Brave"), was the Chief of the Army Staff of the Indian Army during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, and the first Indian Army officer to be promoted to the rank of field marshal. His military career spanned four decades and five wars, beginning with service in the British Indian Army in World War II.
Manekshaw joined the first intake of the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun in 1932. He was commissioned into the 4th Battalion, 12th Frontier Force Regiment. In World War II, he was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry. Following the partition of India in 1947, he was reassigned to the 8th Gorkha Rifles. Manekshaw was seconded to a planning role during the 1947 Indo-Pakistani War and the Hyderabad crisis, and as a result, he never commanded an infantry battalion. He was promoted to the rank of brigadier while serving at the Military Operations Directorate. He became commander of 167 Infantry Brigade in 1952 and served in this position until 1954 when he took over as the Director of Military Training at Army Headquarters.
Manekshaw became the eighth chief of the army staff in 1969. Under his command, Indian forces conducted victorious campaigns against Pakistan in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, which led to the creation of Bangladesh in December 1971. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan, the second and third highest civilian awards of India. In January 1973, Manekshaw was conferred with the rank of Field Marshal, the first army officer of independent India to be so honoured.

My father fought the 3 major wars as Lance Naik ....1962- Indo- China War,1965- Pakistan - India War and 1971- Liberation of Bangladesh by defeating Pakistan...My father used to tell me how Sam Bahadur( Sam Manekshaw) visited the military camp of my dad to support the Gorkha Soldiers...He was so happy with the valour of The Gorkha Soldiers that he was lovingly called Sam Bahadur...My father is no more now but I am proud to be the son of the Fauji...Jai Hind.

Sam Manekshaw was born on 3 April 1914 in Amritsar, Punjab, to Hormizd Manekshaw (1871-1964), who was a doctor, and Hilla, née Mehta (1885-1973), both Parsis who moved to Amritsar from the city of Valsad in the coastal Gujarat region.....
Most parsis were and are from Gujrat cause they landed and took refuge in gujrat so long ago..Just check the facts..
Even Ratan Tata and their ancestors are from Gujrat just check the history my friend ..

Brother Cariappa sir was second. He was promoted in this position in 15jan 1986. Sam bahadur was first. He was promoted in 1973.

Fought many battles and becoming hero is not a piece of cake. just because he said something to the interviewer doesn't mean that he don't deserve anything.no one shouldnt feel ashamed or guilty for what a soldier said.he must have his own personal or family problems or any thing else . leaving your family behind for a sake of country is not a joke.

What a historic political blunder by India - we should have made Pakistan vacating PoK as a pre-condition to releasing these 93,000 Pakistani POWs. The Kashmir issue would have been solved once and for all.
Please remember.. those were the days of Cold war. US/ UK/ France and People' Republic of China were backing Pakistan and only USSR was there behind India of Indira Gandhi. Line of Control was more or less an accepted border and intrusion into the west Pakistan was not acceptable to the permanent members of security council. Liberation of East Pakistan was itself a big achievement.
Since there was no such liberation struggle in POK area, it was not liberated.
What a inspiring story..
And what did india do to him !some thing for which everu indian is ashamed. He was never paid salary till kalam corrected. Army's pension was cut from 70 to 50 percent.i am ashamed that we can do such things.

Gen Kariappa, though much senior to Gen Manekshaw, was awarded the rank of field marshal in 1986, while Manekshaw became Field Marshal in 1973.
