Well, over the years quite some exorcism/ possession movies have been made and counting the money of the successful ones, put all together they made quite some money while costing nothing, so they probably thought “this is the *real* exorcist so we’ll do even better with all our versions” yet they didn’t. They clearly didn’t 🙂

Sony hasn't learned the lesson that you don't put Spider-Man's rogues' gallery in solo movies without him. They did postpone _Kraven the Hunter_ until August 2024, but if he doesn't fight Spider-Man or Spider-Woman what's the point?

I think you raise a good point-the original exorcist was more religious than it’s sequels. A few movies at that time were religious and horror, I wonder if this movie launched that trend??
Also THE OMEN 1976 was serious about the religion and the sequels and remake when after the gore instead.
I think Exorcist 3 more than lives up to that religious template.

I believe it is increasingly becoming very difficult to produce a series that generates the viewership numbers we have seen in the past with Heroes, Lost, Game of Thrones, and even with the first 5 seasons of The Walking Dead. It is possible that the introduction of streaming has split the viewers into smaller groups, making it harder to reach this previously wider audience.

Good point. I think that is defintely part of it. A bigger thing is with cable there was more urgency to watch and if you miss a show thts it.

I remember replying to a comment several years ago about someone lamenting on how there are no longer many millions of people who watch the special episodes that aired during the 1970s-early 1980s. I said it was because there were three channels then.

I think the core of the exorcist that people easily forget is the melodrama. The film is a horror film about demonic possession, but it is also deeply tied to fears of loss of control among one’s family members. And I think the blend of horror and drama is what made it so special

I feel like with the way season 2 has gone, conversation is going to pick up. Last year, I just watched it and never talked about it followed it. This year, I was in on the conversation after week 2 and came to realize I wasnt alone in watching the show.
I'm with you! With every episode my estimation of WofT goes up a little bit more. I may have even compared it to GoT a couple of times. Big thumbs up from me, man!
I like what they've done with the series, and I like the books. A lot of the readers were upset with the changes that were made to the original characters and storyline, but there are so many books in the series that I can't see the producers being able to afford to faithfully recreate the originals. I've read that a Season 3 is assured, but not until 2025😞

It’s not a problem that Nielsen doesn’t divide by seasons. Minutes watched is a strong metric. If people are watching 9 seasons of a show, that deserves to reflected in its viewership numbers.
What made the first Exorcist special was its use of psychological horror. The Exorcist wasn't afraid to make its audience feel uncomfortable and never pulled the camera away when something horrific was going on. It wasn't trying to scare people because the horror came naturally on its own.
It is one of those things where it is big and remembered because it was one of the firsts, not necessarily one of the best (I haven't actually seen it, so I can't speak to it specifically, but you see it all the time where refined ideas are lauded more than the original even though it set the foundations for those later projects).
And they created characters that were totally relatable and you care about so when the horror happened to them, it’s like it’s happening to you.
I’m actually pretty looking forward to The Fall of the House of Usher coming out on Netflix 😊

The Exorcist is like Jaws. Masterpieces that they tried to make into franchises and failed.
To be honest I’m surprised they haven’t rebooted Jaws with a legacy sequel or something yet. Over the years so many shark movies have been made, even quite a good one with The Shallows, and The Meg has been relatively successful… so why no new Jaws movie? It doesn’t have to have a blockbuster budget like The Meg had, you can do it a lot cheaper, and with Jaws 3 and 4 being so bad a new Jaws movie can’t exactly hurt/ ruin the franchise… 🙂
People always underestimate the buying power of women, then act shocked when stuff that appeals to women sells like hotcakes. The Taylor Swift concert movie is going to be an EVENT.
Well I think that is the reason that Disney has gone out of their way to try and make Star Wars and the MCU appeal to women.
I hope 2023 has proven that (and not just casting a women in some franchise where you know they are going to get abused basically regardless of how good a job they do but *actually* making movies *for* women).

I watched 'The long shadow' definitely worth a watch when its picked up in the US. The actors blew it out of the park, many well known names in it on a very disturbing topic .

Travis & Taylor is a BRILLIANT PR play for sure!! I agree that they have to play it right cause they’re starting to annoy people.
So sad for The Creator. My husband and I really enjoyed it. JDW really appeals to me as an understated action hero. I love him in Tenet but I realise I’m one of a few rabid Tenet fans who love to watch it on a loop - how it was meant to be viewed :)

I agree! I thought JDW and The Creator was fantastic but the way everyone was against the movie was saddening to me.
Tenet is unwatchable, I would not watch it a second time even of someone offers me money for it.

Glass Onion is the 4th most viewed movie In Netflix' history by minutes and also got an Oscar nomination for script. Sorry to disappoint you Grace but Rian Johnson is doing pretty well.
Grace loved Rian Johnson until her fanbase turned against him. She gushed about TLJ in her review but once her fanbase raged she turned on a dime against it. She is not genuine and simply repeats what her supporters want her to say.
People just loved Knives Out it doesn't mean anything when all the reviews are hating it.
The original exorcist (and the third one, actually) are good films because they come from specific people who have something to say. Good versus evil, the question of suffering- they didn’t churn out corporate slop. What makes both of those films good is the anthesis of a modern “IP” movie. Any remake will fail unless they get someone who has something to say and who can only express this idea through the film, with a great script to back it up.
I have been loving The Wheel of Time. I really liked season 1, but season 2 has been incredible and got better with every episode. I know a few people who are now getting into it, and I have just picked up the first book to also read through. I just hope it does well enough to keep getting more seasons. 😀

Grace, I've watched all of the Wheel of Time episodes right when they dropped. I don't know why this show isn't getting more buzz. It's excellent. There are UA-camrs making weekly videos about it, though most don't get the kind of numbers your channel gets. I counted 6 different UA-camrs that I subscribe to that cover WOT and I'm sure there are more.
Grace, are Nielsen ratings cumulative? Suits hasn't shown up on Samba TV top ten since mid August. Are they adding past Peacock ratings to current Netflix?

We're all dressing up and making it a big deal since we still haven't been able to secure tickets for her Australian shows early next year! (Also I was tempted to watch the new Frasier but after watching the trailer all my excitement for the show wained)

Yep exactly. I think the fact the big UA-camrs have chosen to not even give it a try is why smaller channels of non-readers like EDN are getting loads of engagement because they’re filling a gap. Also lol, 6 hour shows from the Dusty Wheel are not exactly no one talking about it.
The ratings for season 2 are great and while I don’t think it’s perfect, season 3 is going to be even better 🕷️

I'm in full on october mode, watching anything horror/thriller. Watched the Nun 2 today at home, and we actually enjoyed it more than we thought we would! I am looking forward to the upcoming fall of usher.

I feel like I'm the only one who thinks Castlevania Nocturne was truly amazing and even better than the first series.
Anyway, as a literature person I can't wait to see Fall of the House of Usher! I'm reading through all of Poe's short stories to prepare!
I loved Nocturne, but I feel like the budget decreased from the first series. The fight scenes are closer to still images than they are to a flip book.
I am still eagerly awaiting Season 2! I just hope they get more budget for animation.
Honestly starting to get a little burned out on TV/Movie content. Sat outside with a book yesterday and felt like that may be my new escapism for awhile.
Nothing like reading some Poe on the porch watching the autumn leaves fall with the crisp cold air… I do it every year now

Yea season 2 was AMAZING! Was surprised considering season 1 was just a "nothing else to watch on tv/streaming..." but season 2, I couldnt wait to see the next episode week-to-week.
I thought The Midnight Club was fine as long as you're willing to accept that it's more young adult than Mike Flanagan's other shows.
I think things not trending might be more the case of what twitter has become than anything else. I now have more friends who talk to me directly about shows and series they're watching when they use to post it on social media.

I watched Nocturned twice in a row. I loved it, and I didn't even learn yet that it got renewed for a second season. I am so happy.

I read the books, but I really enjoy the content from some non book readers. They try to keep it spoiler free. I really enjoy the reactions of someone experiencing Wheel of Time for the first time.

The Wheel of Time and Rings of Power don't get popular traction because they violated the source-material too much. The hardcore fans of those properties are not on board in significant numbers. (And you might say, "The hardcore fans don't have the numbers to make a show fail." Not alone, no, but they have the power to make or break the *reputation* of a show. That's why you should never neglect the core fans.)

I think she’s talented but I really think Taylor Swift is the biggest argument for how well blandness sells. When you’re an artist who doesn’t push any boundaries you cast a wiiiiddde net.
I am am Swiftie but I noticed many of her tunes have a similar structure to nursery rhymes. She quite literally found a way to make pop songs with familiar sounds that millions of people know even if they don’t really recognize why. Billy Joel essentially said he did the same thing in the 80s. It’s not a put-down it’s actually a genius way to write a pop song because of the mass appeal.
Futurama was in top 10 for 4 out of 6 weeks so far, i think that's actually good.
Well its a slow time for me with movies/TV for me. They're showing 'The Thing' at Alamo Drafthouse tomorrow so I'll catch that and I'll definitely catch Taylor Swift this coming weekend. Other than that, I'm just catching up on anime series and books I want to read.

it's SHOCKING to me that Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake isn't even charting on top 10 original chart. Max has yet to have a top 10 debut on Originals since they joined Nielsen. I think Our Flag Means Death won't chart there either. Sad state of Max Originals. Even Peacock & Paramount got there. What gives? Does it have to have an HBO sticker before people tune in on their streaming service?
