I had the pleasure of Tour Managing the State Opera of South Australia around Sth.Aust., with a production of La Boheme. Dennis O'Neill played Rudolfo & Gwen Annear played Mimi in about 1976. It was an arduous tour but with many wonderful moments.
I'm sorry I never heard him sing live, but remember Guilliame Tell at Covent Garden in the 80's when at the first interval, a member of the audience wearing a a scruffy suit who looked just like him , left just ahead of me. I thought about asking who he was but didn't. He then went into the artists entrance in Floral Street. What a missed opportunity!
I was very lucky to see him sing this role at Covent Garden.
