Most sopranos wish they had as “sad” a career as Kiri. I heard her sing plenty of fantastic high-Cs at the Metropolitan, and once even a high-Eb. Here, she sings the high-C as Puccini wrote it, very softly, but you hear it as pinched and thin. Oh well.

Yes, they sang exactly as Puccini wrote it: the soprano on high-C, the tenor on E below it. No screaming high-Cs, the way Pavarotti always did it.

Agreed it is pinched and we bit thin and screechy,that said she’s older here and was a lovely soprano in her prime
