I bought it for taking video of my son’s basketball games and it’s absolutely awesome. It’s not as high resolution as my Sony A7R5 but I use it literally every game on a selfie stick and base so it stands alone on the floor. I absolutely love this camera. 👍🏽
Absolutely agree with you that a pro version is required. The camera on the pocket 3 is just not good enough and it's use case for me is reserved for when filming on on my mirrorless is not allowed and its night time/low light and my iphone won't work. Thats a pretty specific use case. Still blown away by how no camera company has autoconnect microphones like the pocket 3 does so its still useful for that as well but generally i cant quite figure out its use in my vlogs when i have all these nicer cameras and better mics as well.
How surprising. A full-frame top-of-the-game $5k+ camera+lens+gimbal combo outperforms a handheld device that costs less than $700. It’s meant to be an easily accessible carry-around vlogging tool, not a professional device. In my opinion, there is absolutely no need to make a $1500 pro version, because your Canon will outperform that one too. And you won’t give the footage to your clients anyway. I appreciate the effort that you put into this video. However, I find it unnecessarily critical. It’s like making a long video about how a Ferrari cannot carry as much as a truck, and how it may get stuck on rough terrain. For anyone who is watching, and only wants to use this device for vlog/lifestyle videos: you won’t regret purchasing it. If you want to use it for commercial movie production, you should spend 10x more.
You wont use it for cinema for sure and ofcorse 5K camera lens gimbal combo is better…..but does this combo fits in your bag? I had the first pocket since it came out until the end of 2023….than it was stolen from me…You know what? Than i realised how exactly i was using it. I’ve never used it as a A camera, but as B or C camera when i needed that extra angle it was just perfect and i’ve had it always with me. I remember when i bought the GH5 and it was my A cam until the S5ii… now i use 2xS5ii and i leave the GH5 and the GH5s at home……but sometimes i still wish i had the pocket with me as C cam or for bts footage……So i bought the pocket 3 today. HUGE improvement in quality. This 1 inch sensor really makes a difference.
I loved the everything about the video: picture quality, audio, the way info was presented and this really helped me not only understand the capabilities and limitations and how I might use it. Inside the church looked really good. Streaks & ghosting is one place mirrorless cameras have an advantage over the pocket or cell phones by using lens hoods and zoom lenses.
One thing that most reviewers don't mention is that this makes a great web cam - no futzing about - just plug it in, and with tracking you can move about room or studio, do quick demos etc.
Yeah, good point. Not something I need much as I only ever do zoom meetings with clients really and the macbook cam is fine for that. Must try it though, thanks.
I definitely think there should be another version of this camera for the prosumer with a larger sensor and even a few focal length choices. Let’s keep the Pocket 3 size and add a more heavy duty one. I’d buy one immediately.
Yeah, considering it costs only 500 and the Ronin is 8k plus. There's a gap there in which a more solid, higher quality unit would work. Even if it meant fitting your phone onto it.

I am not a vlogger but am considering the Pocket 3 as a 2nd camera to record my daughter while she is playing competitive volleyball. I have seen nothing on this camera recording this type of fast paced, rapid change of direction movement sports. Any insight on this or am I going to buy this and be the first one to evaluate the Pocket 3 in this type of recording environment? Thanks
Unless you're on the court, it's not really the best option. But if you're in close to her as she hits the ball, it might work. maybe put a little thought into it.
You're right. They should make an intermediate pro version. They have the Ronin which is the pro version. A single hand version as big as the original Osmo that has the option of licenced cinema dng would fullfill our mutual pro impulse. I looked at their pro drone gimble & wonder if it could be the genisis of a mid pro edition? They have the bedrock tech and previous edition experience. How hard could it be?
My point exactly. You could use the X5 in RAW on the OG Omso handle 8 years ago!!! Thing about what they could do if they wanted? You don't need the z-axis of the Ronin, it could be a super compact, lightweight unit.
I bought this for family vids and vacation and it should serve that purpose. This won't replace my Arri's or Venice's we have for pro use. Definitely something I could give our social media team to use though.
Yeah, fully agree that it’s a fair and equal comparison - Osmo Pocket 3 against the Canon R5C😉😉 Seriously though, your comments on the Mic2 is spot on👍
This might be my first gimbal camera. Is there anything better on the market right now (2024) or is this the market leader? Thanks for such a great review. Subscribed.
One thing I wish it had is a small jog wheel that could be used to adjust iso/shutter speed or ev comp on the fly… having to go into the menu isnt the greatest nor quickest. Other than that, its fantastic.
Yeah, I agree. Most people will end up just using this in auto. You simply cant keep up with the exposure changes via the controls it offers and the screen is so small, it's hard to see. A little dial and an indicator on screen to show blown highlights or under exposed shadows would be great.
Hi Hugh!, nice review. You skipped through a number of items and issues of interest. That many others have not covered, eg bobbing, very helpful all around. If you have a moment, it would be great to hear any pros/cons on using the HLG option?. Big thanks. Will be checking out further content here on your channel.
Thanks a lot, yeah, I'll try that soon. I didn't fully explore all the options to be honest. I tend to just use these things int he way that suits me and I would always just go for the d-log option first.
Thanks so much for your I depth review of the DJI pocket 3. I bought one of these and struggle to use it. I use my phone to capture videos of my dogs for UA-cam & I've had trouble getting it to follow animals & shoot downwards. Perhaps not the best for that type of shooting? I'm not a seasoned cinematographer. Perhaps I'm using the wrong mode for that purpose. Overall, I love the portability of this camera & the app. It was a great purchase & I'm happy with the quality of what I do capture.
Thanks, no I haven't see those options yet. Most gimbal work I do will be with my Ronin and R5C and I can get smooth results with that. A bit of bobbing for vlog stuff is OK.
Great review Hugh. I'm looking at getting one for Camino this year - looks utterly ideal except for the lack of optical zoom. Have to use old fashioned "sneaker zoom" instead . . .
Hey Gavin, got your email thanks, will get back to you on that. The Osmo will be great for on the move but bring a longer lens on a mirrorless body if you can.
They have a pro version, it’s called the Ronin 4D and it even stabilizes vertical bob, but yeah it’s pricey. I don’t personally think there’s much of a market for a $1500+ pocket camera like this even with upgraded specs. People who want that already have plenty of mirrorless options. Hopefully BlackMagic comes out with something similar to a compact RED box cam soon, I’d love a compact Super35 cinema cam with mini XLR ins and a built-in 5-7” touchscreen monitor. Bonus points if it takes mini V mount.
The Ronin 4D isn't a 'pro Osmo'. If it was a pro Osmo they'd call it the 'Osmo Pro' not a Ronin 4D. You don't hold a Ronin 4D as a vlogging tool and point it at yourself holding it with one hand which is essentially what an Osmo is designed for. A 1500 bucks version of this that was waterproof, has better dynamic range, is easier to expose manually, has an adjustable focal length and maybe better 120 fps, would sell like hot cakes in my opinion. I'd be the first to buy it. Thanks for the comment though.
I like it but due to British weather especially over the last few weeks rain its remained in its carrying case as it hates water I bought it as I'm 68 now and getting a bit shaky so this makes creating videos much easier and smoother.
Great little review, Hugh. I'm totally with you in having little bits like that that you can keep in the bag without a second thought, but that pull you out of a hole more often than not - I used to make sure and bring the Sennheisers on shoots with corporate clients, and only break the DJI Mics out in case of emergency, but I've stopped completely, and have even recommended to certain clients that they get their own set. Here's my question though: Even if you can't see a massive business case for this, you've got bigger and better cameras and stabilizers, is it worth just throwing this into the rotation and leaving it there for when you're under the cosh and haven't time to balance a gimbal? Like how many times has that saved you on a shoot where you grab it, shoot it, and forget it?
Thanks a lot. On a 'higher end' job in which I was filming pre-planned shots with the intention of capturing as nice as footage as possible, then I would opt to put the time into setting up the gimbal. It takes me about 4 minutes to go from camera in bad to first gimbal shot so that's not long. We spend a lot more time than that doodling around with other gear anyway. I would use the Osmo for convenience, and to grab quick bits for social media and the likes but I wouldn't use it as my main camera. The light flares from it are pretty bad.
You’re not really describing the degree of hassle it takes to pack, mount, balance, charge, and move around with a big camera on a large gimbal. The pocket 3 is an absolute beast for the size and convenience of the system, and the quality it produces.
It only takes me about 3 minutes to get up and running with a gimbal. On most 'work' jobs, that time is minuscule in comparison to other factors such as planning shots and adjusting items in the composition. Of course the osmo is going to be way more convenient, that's why it's a seller but if you want the best possible shots, a few minutes to setup isn't a big deal. Not for me anway.
@@HuFilms even traveling and allowing for more packing space for the gimbal and camera gear is a hassle. I don’t do photography or videography for work but my gimbal sits at home. If I were like you and getting specifically paid for work it would be a different story. The gimbal camera setup is now dead for non-professionals for travel videography.
@@HuFilms I personally very much enjoy your style. I am still working on my channel and developing a niche and getting comfortable in front of the camera. Just picked up this little guy to supplement my mirrorless cams much like you are. Thanks for a very nicely presented overview with very valid opinions.
New Feature Requests for the New DJI OSMO Pocket 3 1. Add a dwelling time for each of up to four settable movement positions in Motion Time-Lapse Mode. As each of the four settable positions programmed into a motion time-lapse sequence is reached, the end user could set from 1 to 10 seconds of a pause in gimbal movement as each programmed position is reached during the sequence before the gimbal moves forward to the next programmed position. This would yield a much more dynamic and professional looking, smoother motion time-lapse sequence. 2. In Motion Time-Lapse Mode the ability to set movement ease in and ease out settings from 0.5 to 3 seconds for each programmable gimbal position before gimbal movement normal progression rate is reached. 3. True 24.00p filming speed. 4. The ability to set time-lapse sequences based on 24.00p. 5. The ability to be able to record from the DJI Mic 2 and from a plugged in via USB audio source at the same time. 6. Adding a 10 Bit 4:2:2 recordable video codec.
The problem with us photographers and videographers is that we care too much about how the result looks or sounds (as with the mic). I haven't seen any youtube consumer who said "oh the bokeh is not nice on this channel or the video is not wide enough. Let's skip this channel". Although sound is important a decent mic will do well I think. No UA-cam consumer will be able to tell the quality difference between a red 1 and a pocket 3 video. All we do is pumping us up with stuff that we think is important to the viewer, but the viewer/consumer doesn't care at all.
@@HuFilms low cut cuts out low frequencies and for some stupid reason is enabled by default on the DJI mic. Turn it off and redo your tests and you will see a huge difference in sound quality.
Great review, but never going to work as good as action cameras for biking / cycling since I have tried it with these, with any kind of subtle bad roads you get a lot of jitters that the footage is unusable. Best camera for action activities is either a 360 camera (since you can reframe ) or any action camera as they stabilize crazy good and there's no digital stabilization in the pocket camera.
I know what you're saying but when I refer to biking, I mean hand holding it. I think it'll be better than the action cams for this. Mounting on the bars, yeah sure, it's gonna shake like hell.
I keep saying this but I wish there was a Rock Steady setting - the selfie bobbing doesn't bother me as much as the horizon bobbing up and down like we are on a dingy. It looks terrible. You don't need Rock Steady in dark lighting. So maybe that's the deal, don't film while walking during the day.
You don't get it, do you? I'm referring to the large amount of really strong filters in the box, whilst the weakest filters here are 4 and 8 stops. The sun does shine in Ireland by the way, same ol' sun that shines all over mother earth. Good luck using your ND 1000 to get your perfect shutter speed.
My concern about getting is it's ruggedness or lack of it? Not good for shitty weather. Especially the connection of the battery grip and base. Looks really wonky! What I would like is VLOGGING inconspicuously in Japan where low profile is best in public. Before I spend 95.8k yen $650 USD, I really need to understand if this is a "must have" or would just be ''nice to have"'? Tired of buying shit I don't use! Thanks... good review!
I am wondering how many hours of 4k footage it can record to a 512 GB memory card? Is there any sort of limit if you can keep the device hooked up to power in some way?
I think I watched everything in the last weeks, but your video gives a fresh approach. I shoot short reportages alone, docs and mainly portraits and I bought the Osmo for my second camera. The ease of use, the fast shooting, uploading and editing and the size(I am standing really close to people, and they don't realize that I am shooting, let alone in their direction- i made a lot of really natural interviews ) makes it a fantastic news gathering tool. In my line of work quality is not as importantt as in a commercial video, I definitively will use it professionaly, it just hits the minimum requirement with the 1 inch senzor and in cases where you have to shoot as a fly on the wall, it is a better tool than my canon rigged up. Any tips on colouring to go beside canon footage on a same timeline? -2 sharpness, and a little bit reduction in saturation are my secret weapons, but I would love it if somebody would make a pro lut to convert it to be as close as possible to Canon footage
I’m not happy, this camera isn’t perfect, my wife is cheating on me, my dog bit me. I know what I’ll do, I’ll make a video and post it on UA-cam. Please like me.
Unfortunately I have returned my Oslo pocket 3. Very good image quality for this size. But... The Gimbal have big problems to follow the person of interest because your tracking prioritize the face and not the whole human. For example when a dancer hides his face with his hands or another move where his face is not captured by the camera, the gimbal cannot follow him. It is annoying. There is another cameras that doing better now. I would love to buy the Osmo Pocket 3 again as soon as the gimbal gets the tracking system used by DJI in his Drones.
smh "intensifier". literally just fresnel lenses with zoom/focus feature. light intensity technically stays the same regardless of focus or spot size since it's the same amount of light coming in and out, just at a smaller spot.
Nice looking jacket but I hate the big logo on the back. I'm ok with a small logo on the front but why should I pay nearly $200.00 to advertise someone's company for free? I'd be happier with a larger Velcro loop patch on the back.
Yeah, there's a big gap between this and the Ronin 4d. Something in the 2-3k price range would be great. That could essentially replace your cam + gimbal setup.
No, it is not suitable for cyclists at all, it is not an Action Camera, it is not designed for such situations and the manufacturer warns that using it in extreme conditions can damage the gimbal. You may damage system of stabilisation over shaking
it took them 3 years to release the pocket 3. a pro version would cannibalize their product and defeats the purpose. why don't you ask Cannon or Sony to make a smaller gimbled vlogging camera. that's right they can't. they've tried and failed. ... all we need to do is wait 3 years. they will release something even more fantastic but then you will still wish for more.
Yeah I had all the drones and the Osmo Pocket 2, and then this Osmo Pocket 3. WHAT A HUGE MISTAKE.. 600 dollars for bad sound.. unless you have the weird lavalier imitation that is useless for the work some of us do.
Hold on - I thought the whole point was it was an entire 1" sensor!??? How did they get away with having a sensor SMALLER than a MFT (Micro Four Thirds) sensor and call it a one inch sensor?? I was actually fooled into thinking this might be better than my GH4 in low light since the sensor was much bigger!! But its not?? How?? So it must be worse in low light than my own GH4 then... those shits in marketing know exactly what they are doing calling it one inch sensor! p.s. the ice in your glass smashed a hole through it - just how???

One thing I wish it had is a small jog wheel that could be used to adjust iso/shutter speed or ev comp on the fly… having to go into the menu isnt the greatest nor quickest. Other than that, its fantastic.
Yeah, I agree. Most people will end up just using this in auto. You simply cant keep up with the exposure changes via the controls it offers and the screen is so small, it's hard to see. A little dial and an indicator on screen to show blown highlights or under exposed shadows would be great.
Can i record videos for UA-cam without flipping the screen of the camera
Hi Hugh!, nice review. You skipped through a number of items and issues of interest. That many others have not covered, eg bobbing, very helpful all around. If you have a moment, it would be great to hear any pros/cons on using the HLG option?. Big thanks. Will be checking out further content here on your channel.
Thanks a lot, yeah, I'll try that soon. I didn't fully explore all the options to be honest. I tend to just use these things int he way that suits me and I would always just go for the d-log option first.
If they used the camera set up from the mavic 3 pro. Would that be pro enough?
Great to get your take on it Hugh, haven’t looked at the pockets since the original Osmo as well and might be tempted now
Thanks a lot Jay, yeah, do check them out, they're great!
Thanks a lot. Honestly, I think if you just put the time into learning, it'll pay off and you'll get the hang of it.
Also have a look at the Z axis options to take out the handheld bobbing, have seen a few 3D printed versions
@@HuFilms Cheers Hugh - no rush on replying (just when you get a moment - we're heading to Spain in March). Appreciate any insights ! Cheers, Gavin
I like it but due to British weather especially over the last few weeks rain its remained in its carrying case as it hates water
I bought it as I'm 68 now and getting a bit shaky so this makes creating videos much easier and smoother.
Ha ha, I feel you with the shakes! This will be easier on the trapped nerves I have in my shoulder from heavy gimbal and lens work. You'll love it!
It has a fixed aperture.
People do not emphasize that enough.
Phones do as well but it can't replace a real camera.
Seriously, you add a great feature and then people say, "but it can't do 8K for 2 hour cinematic movie recordings".
A honest review and I appreciate it!
Thanks a lot.
Thank you for your presentation.
My pleasure!
Another great, low key, factual review with examples, references and care. Thank you for doing the type and style of material you do here on YT 🫶🏻
Thanks a lot, yeah, I'm not as hyper or action packed as some but sometimes people like that.
@@HuFilms I personally very much enjoy your style. I am still working on my channel and developing a niche and getting comfortable in front of the camera. Just picked up this little guy to supplement my mirrorless cams much like you are. Thanks for a very nicely presented overview with very valid opinions.
New Feature Requests for the New DJI OSMO Pocket 3
Good points though I wouldn't be doing this myself.
Its a pity the older DJI mics are not compatible with it.
Wow, really well done review! Thank you!
Hey, thanks a lot!
Wouldve loved to have a side by side with a gopro, mirrorless or whatever
Hard to judge the image without comparison
Did you turn off low cut? dji mic is waay better than the rhode in my tests.
wow, that's interesting. No, I didn't yet.
@@HuFilms low cut cuts out low frequencies and for some stupid reason is enabled by default on the DJI mic. Turn it off and redo your tests and you will see a huge difference in sound quality.
Can you charge it with a battery charger?
I agree they should the size of a mobile phone gimble or mini gimble with built lens would be nice
Yeah, the ergonomics and size are a bit over 'consumer' in that it's a bit small and lighter than ideal for getting good shots.
Very comprehensive review! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Might be a dumb question... With the app can the recorded videos get stored in your phone and can I upload them straight to UA-cam
Yes it can 👍🏻
@@jordy188 Cheers mate 👍
Thanks for the video. Pocket 3's continuous focus is horrible. Such a let-down from what could be a brilliant little camera.
must be power on button, without screen rotation
It is! Lol. It's a big red button lol
@@expat5587 nobody said about it before. can you rec short video about this function?
a pro version would be amazing, it's to wide angle for pro use and needs a bit more weight like the old Osmo's
great review love the glass part lol
ha ha, thanks. that was nuts!
Great review, thank you!
Thanks a lot, glad you liked it!
Isn’t the “pro” version called the Ronin 4D? 🙃
Is the Ronin 4D a pocket vlogging camera? Jeez, I didn't know that.
Nice video, thx for the info.
Such a funny Irish problem: what’s the point of these strong ND Filters??? Well when you leave Ireland for a day 😅
You don't get it, do you?
DJI Zenmuse X9-8K Gimbal Camera?
does anyone know where to find that cage he was talking about for it?
Just search online. Will take you like 2 seconds to find
DJI Ronin 4D-6K?
I am wondering how many hours of 4k footage it can record to a 512 GB memory card? Is there any sort of limit if you can keep the device hooked up to power in some way?
For 4K 60fps D-Log it's around 8 hours for me on a 512GB card
Great video
Best review thanks
Hello,
Which power adapter are you using??
For charging? Any usb adaptor will do.
Trust me you need them that strong here in Australia Normal sunny day you need 64 Minimum
Thanks a lot, I might do this in another video so keep an eye out on the channel.
I’m not happy, this camera isn’t perfect, my wife is cheating on me, my dog bit me. I know what I’ll do, I’ll make a video and post it on UA-cam. Please like me.
It is already “Pro” enough for most of us.
I would love to buy the Osmo Pocket 3 again as soon as the gimbal gets the tracking system used by DJI in his Drones.
there is pro version its called ronin 4d...
Keep tryin'
I was thinking the exact same thing
Pro!! Ha,ha,ha! Come on!
It is For vlogging only
collaborate with hasselblad to make a pro version
same as dji mavic
DJI is Hasselblad, they literally just put that name on stuff now 'cos they can.
smh "intensifier".
literally just fresnel lenses with zoom/focus feature. light intensity technically stays the same regardless of focus or spot size since it's the same amount of light coming in and out, just at a smaller spot.
Temu sells a silicone sleeve for less than $6
Cool, thanks. I’m gonna get one.
Nice looking jacket but I hate the big logo on the back. I'm ok with a small logo on the front but why should I pay nearly $200.00 to advertise someone's company for free? I'd be happier with a larger Velcro loop patch on the back.
Tony Northrup said that right after the release about the pro version should be made 😊 hopefully soon
I don't think you understand what I'm talking about.
@@HuFilms No, I think it's you who doesn't understand the positioning principles of this device, misleading your subscribers.
@@exclamo The title says honest review after 2 months. And cycling is not an extreme condition, mountain biking is. Stop being a DK!
it took them 3 years to release the pocket 3. a pro version would cannibalize their product and defeats the purpose. why don't you ask Cannon or Sony to make a smaller gimbled vlogging camera. that's right they can't. they've tried and failed. ... all we need to do is wait 3 years. they will release something even more fantastic but then you will still wish for more.
Ha ha, are you being sarcastic? force, I'm just too strong!
NO

Great video! I guess it depends on what type of work you’re using it for but with the right lighting any camera can be used to tell a story. @andyreismeyer has used the pocket 3 for news clips in L.A. but yeah. I do wish it had more focal length options. But as expected it’s going to struggle against a $5000 beast. 😂
