  • I recently did an article on how to do a cheap bike restoration and this Trek 800 was featured. In this article I’m going to dive into this Trek 800 mountain bike restoration and discuss why I feel it’s still special enough to be worthy of my time fixing it up.
The bike is meant for my daughter, who wants to ride a mountain bike because I do. And it had to be blue, and preferably be meant for women, because she’s used to getting off the bike by moving her foot over the downtube rather than over the back wheel.
The Trek 800 was 50 euros, but was 30 years old and had been left out in the rain. I was a woman in her sixties. It worked, but could definitely do with a good clean and some new cables.

I watched this to get ideas of how to clean up my 1994 Trek 820 Mountain Track, and now I think I am going to keep it! It's been reliable for 30 years. I'm getting to the point I need to change out the handlebars for something more ergonomical, and I think this may be worth it. The only rust I have is at the spindles of the wheels, and trust me, this bike has been around the block!

Hy and greetings from Germany 😘🌞🍀 I like the work you do and I think you’re right that today it’s a fact that things are generally designed and produced to have just a certain lifetime. I bought some old bikes from eBay and had a lot of fun by disassembling, cleaning and rebuilding them. Although I have a wonderful new Giant e-bike that I always wanted to have for many years. What drives me crazy is the prices of bikes today, you can nearly buy a car for the money sometimes. Anyways: keep on going, tot ziens and I have much fun now buy watching your videos here, one after the other 👍😘🌞🍀🚴‍♂️

I’ve restored many old mtbs from the “pre front shock” era. They are a far better investment that a cheap modern bike.

So nice, looks like she loved it. The shifters are annoying! Just replaced them myself with something more intuitive to deal with. I have the same bike in a "mens" version here in RTM just waiting to be overhauled. How come you kept it 3x? The simplicity of a 1 or 2x makes it so much more enjoyable IMO. Meguiars is soo nice, discovered it too late.

The reason I kept the bike as-is, is probably because my daughter could care less.

I've got the same bike different year and I'm having trouble getting the rear derailleur back together after servicing it. It looks almost the same as yours. The screws are different lengths and the gears are different sizes and I don't know what goes where.

If you still have all the parts, you simply have to learn how to reassemble the derailleur. If you don't have a video of disassembling it, like I have because I make UA-cam videos, look up the make and model of your derailleur online to learn how it should look like. I say this because I also pulled things apart, not knowing exactly how to put them back together again.

No idea, but a caliper should give you the correct measurement

There are different diameters, i have an 800 antelope and my seat post clamp that actually secures the seat had a break in it... etched in the seat post itself was "26.8"...
But all the googling i did kept saying 27.2
27.2 post/clamp combo was TOO BIG. More google told me some 800s were made overseas, and their seat posts were 26.8
If you dont have a post at all, a metric ruler can get you close enough info of inner diameter of the center post, which will equal the outer diameter of seat post.@restorationdotbike
