    I was in a serious accident back in 1991, after a few weeks in the hospital the doctor put me on ibuprofen. I thought it was safe. I had total knee replacement in May 2018, I did not want to take the opioid medication, I went with ibuprofen. Bad idea. The past week, Jan 26th, I was hospitalized with a server GI Bleed. When the GI doctor finally showed up the first thing he asks me. "Do I take any of the NSAID or aspirin?" A. Yes! He took me off of both. The doctor in the hospital said they were seeing more and more GI bleeds even in young people 20 and up. I have been on a steady diet of ibuprofen for almost 27 years.

    I was advised to take Ibuprofen when I had injured shoulder tendons but it no effect whatsoever, went through a variety of prescription drugs ending with high dose Endone but still not much help with pain. Finally in desperation I worked out 1/2 a bottle of neat rum did the trick, it either dulled the pain or knocked me out so I could sleep. I sort of count rum as a "natural" remedy not a drug. Your UA-cam stuff is great, very informative, I love how you are "the most famous PTs on the Internet, in our opinion, of course" - love it.

    I watch your videos often and always appreciate the information. WIth this one I was a little disappointed that the drug wasn't talked about in more detail... such as, my daughter ran college track and actually had to sign an agreement that she would not take Ibuprofen. When I asked why this was the coach explained that Advil causes bruises and soft tissue injuries to bleed more than it would have otherwise (simplistic explanation). Also, there was a Banff film about a cyclist that had pain that got worse and worse and swelled. When she got to the doctor he said that Advil was actually harming her condition. It would have been helpful to hear the details of when it is not recommended and how it hurts the body, other than stomach and kidney.

      Hey. Just wanted to make you aware on the fact that Ibuprofen should not be taken in Acute injuries or any type of acute pain. Because Inflammation in our bodies is a natural healing response to injuries or stress of any kind. And suppression it with NSAIDs will definitely worsen it. It can be taken in chronic Inflammatory conditions which is not resolving but not in acute Injuries.

    Did I miss the part about no NSAIDS for Chronic Congestive Heart Failure? That's the first thing they told me when I woke up in ICU after a heart attack that left heart damage. They told me I'd have chronic Congestive Heart Failure for the rest of my life and could never take Ibuprofen or any other NSAID again because it would negate all my heart medicines. Might want to add another video to your list to talk with that pharmacist again... about NSAIDs, high blood pressure and heart conditions again. Most people who take meds for high blood pressure... and those with high blood pressure who don't realize they have high blood pressure... don't realize how dangerous ibuprofen is to them... and how it can be the catalyst to pushing that BP problem into a full-fledged heart problem, heart attack or worse. Just saying... y'all not finished with this Vitamin-I series yet.

      Nutrition is going to play a bigger part in pain aspects with strength training. Yes, you are going to hurt a bit no matter what, but if you are feeding your body properly it can be mitigated. Also remember... if you had a lay off for more than 3-4 weeks. Your first workout is going to be a killer. Many of you muscle fibers of become dormant and don't have electricity firing through them. The first week or two of coming back is soreness due to the fiber endings getting use to the electricity. Then after that is what I call the good pain.

      Also the colors used in the pills are highly toxic to the body, not to mention Bayer is the producer.... Which is the same company that thinks it's ok to sell HIV infected products to less fortunate countries, among other heinous things. These pills should be used on extremely rare occasions. If your body is aching then you have an imbalance within your body that needs to be addressed through nutrition, exercise, mental health etc., masking the problem will always be detrimental unless it is an acute injury or extreme disease. But there are many much safer and natural alternatives out there.

    Interesting info in light of an Australian study that was in the news on Feb 2. It concluded NSAIDs like Ibuprofen are no more clinically effective on back pain than placebo. That the G.I. risks out way the benefits. Based on my recent experience with back pain, I'll take the G.I. risk as needed. There was about a week that 4 tablets allowed me to sleep for a few hours in my hardwood chair. Thank you so much for your videos on exercises and stretches to relieve that pain. 7 weeks of doing the ones that help and I can't say I feel like a million dollars yet, but many days are $999,000 and sleeping at nights in bed...Priceless! . I am not taking it again. You admit it causes GI bleeds, and you still take it all the time?

    • @mindymay3
      @mindymay3 Рік тому

      Yes, it can cause GI bleeds if you take it incorrectly, such as on an empty stomach, too high a dose, too often, etc. If you take it properly, it is unlikely to cause GI problems. You likely had an allergic reaction, so of course you should not take it again.

      NSAID'S are dangerous. This guy on video is pushing it. Try Terry Naturally's Curamin Extra Strength. It is safe and natural. (Turmeric) and is effective in relieving inflammation.

    If your doctor says... I'm studying to become a dr and I will look after my patients by recommending as little medication as possible. Often for example ginger and apple cider vinegar do better job than any meds.

      I guess this is what all doctors should do? It depends on the case. But sometimes a higher dose over a shorter period of time is better, for example with drugs that you shouldn't stay on over a longer period of time because it'll damage your body long term more with a lower dose. So as little as possible is a very vague term. Although I agree with you 100% on recommending diet tips. Diet should always be part of a treatment plan, and even to prevent. So if that's the kind of doctor you'll become, someone who cares for a holistic approach, you'll be of great service! Wishing you and future patients the best!

    The problem I had with ibuprofen is the high dose stuff can kill you quick. I'm referring to the 800mg stuff. I was using as prescribed and I nearly died in my sleep. Fortunately I started vomiting blood. The coffee grounds looking type. Which got me to the first hospital. They quickly sent me to the second hospital and started transfusions 3 bags later and lesson learned. Experience is the best teacher. Learn from mine... Be very cautious with high dose ibuprofen. The danger is undeniable. I have no opinion on moderate use.

    Sadly, ibuprofen is known as a prostaglandin/COX-2 enzyme blocker. Prostaglandins in the vasculature fight against the effects of things like hyaline deposits and other inflammatory processes which can cause issues ranging from embolisms all the way to atherosclerosis and fibrosis of the vasculature.
    These prostaglandins also are in the vasculature of the renals or kidneys, so if you take that ibuprofen for too long, it can take away a good enough amount of prostaglandins to set off a scarring process called mysangial cell deposition in the vessels of the kidneys, which can bring the filtration rate way down, causing you to be threatened with serious kidney disease or failure.

      So how much can you take? Most/all drugs have side effects but can be critically important. So the rub is finding a balance between benefit and harm. I take a little ibuprofen once or twice a week and my doctor said I could take about 3x that much. Inflammation is bad, sometimes mortal, so why ignore it?

    This pharmacist said he takes Ibuprofin almost daily, which would seem to be over-use. Why not adjust diet to be anti-inflammatory? I think by featuring a Pharmacist, you might want to consider featuring a nutritionist or some other natural alternative point of view. Any drug like Ibuprofin that can raise blood pressure, used over the long term, would seem to have some perhaps unquantifiable effect on vascular health, which in turn is a strong factor in vascular dementia. Please do not be so softball on these topics. Now you have an audience and that brings responsibility. Much appreciation to you.
