Lincoln fan here, got a ticket in the main stand as the imps allocation was sold out!
the goal came from a free kick after Gordon Davies had broken away 10 yards inside the Lincoln half, only for Steve Thompson to bring him down, with the resulting red card. Thompson could well have marked big Roger if he had remained on the field and prevented the clean header he had! Lincoln had a tiny but high quality squad, they came from nowhere with a club record long unbeaten run, to get to this point of the season, though a couple of unexpected 1-0 losses away from home before this game, proved ultimately costly. Davies & Imps keeper Felgate were regulars in the Wales squad. Half the imps team went on to play in the top division, Trevor Peake captained Coventry's cup winning team. Lincoln could not have survived in the second division as they had a totally inept and unambitious board with short arms and long pockets! as proved with the debacle that transpired the following season and ultimately became the first team to be automatically relegated from the football league in 1987. incidentally, Burnley the champions came straight backdown and almost went out of the league instead of Lincoln in 87 but for a last gasp 2-1 win against Orient.

So memorable. Was one of the all time great nights. Couldn’t get in hammy end, ended up Putney terrace.. perfect when players came out the cottage. More like 30,000. Old boys looking well. Ivor a goal scoring legend……

I was thinking the same, Dale Tempest looks like he could last the full ninety minutes today.

First and only time I ran on the pitch, remember Roger Brown's header and the relief I felt at the final whistle, not much else.

Remember it so well. Had nerves but there was some confusion over our seats so that made me forget the nerves at the start. That is until they equalised. Can't believe it was 40 years ago.

Arrived a little late with Dad, couldn't get in the Hammy, ended up in the Putney End. Big Rog did the biz, but tbf Lincoln gave us a hell of a pasting with 10 men, The final whistle couldn't come too soon. Ha ha I do remember the Lincoln pelting our boys with anything they could lay their hands on! Great days under Mac, just such a shame the club was tun by Ernie Clay.
    What could have been....

Just caught up with this, what a magical night . I can remember being moved around by the swaying crowd at the Hammersmith End ,if there were under 30.000 at the cottage that evening I'm Elon Musk.
What a pity there is no film record of Roger Brown's epic header.

Some dirty scuzzy git spat in my face that day. I was only a boy. He’s probably dead now.
