KSP Space Shuttle Replica Mission (100% Stock)

- I've been working on this historically accurate STS (Space Shuttle) replica for a couple months now, and it's finally ready to show off! The design is inherently very complex to balance and tune but once it flies it FLIES!
There was quite a bit of research that went into this project, building it exactly like the shuttle means I have to fly it like the shuttle too, which took a lot of practice. There are so many subtle details to it at each phase of the mission. I hope you enjoyy!
As always, the craft file can be downloaded here: drive.google.com/file/d/15Nnu...
“I’ve improved things on this shuttle.... but it’s still a bit of a turd to fly” - NASA (probably)
LMAO
This made me make that sound where you like laughing but under my breath but it sounds like cccccskd
(I don’t know how to put it reall6)
@@switzerland1140 snickering?
underrated channel
man should really have more subs
Sick reentry man!!!
Really good replica of the space shuttle , good job
Just awesome space shuttle, and thanks for the file, I’ m just use it to learn the engine inclinaision because mine are always triky to use. Have a nice day
Love it! Please can you do more on the shuttle?
Yyyeeessss!!
Nice, it's more accurate to the real life one than my own attempt, which also carries its own fuel for in-orbit and doesn't use angled KS-25 engines. They're so heavy, they make the design too unstable. But you've done it!

Underrated channel, subbed
Awesome video!
this is incredible. Subbed.
Shuttles are always fun! Center of thrust is key.
soo cool video, love it pls make more
Amazing man!!
sick video man, ive been playing KSP for over a year and i still cant manage to rondevu
been playing for a year, still never been to laythe...
@@sfsaddict4206 furthest ive got is Minmus lol
noobs ik speel het 3 maanden en heb al een jool 5 missie gedaan
I find rondevu one of the hardest things in this game, but basicly all you have to remember is: lower=is faster/higher=is slower
i’ve played for a couple months and have now sent probes to every body. just haven’t seen manned missions past the kerbin system yet
This is amazing!
Is this in career mode?
Yep I only play in career mode, even when I'm rehearsing. Usually my "test missions" include a few satellites or other objectives to help pay for the launches I do while I'm recording, plus my regular career play of course
@@Rocketman679 Thats awesome
Keeping a low AoA helps, that's what they did for most of the early ascent in the shuttle.
good shutle bro!
I used thud engines for the oms in mi shutle, but i couldn´t align them with the center of mass, so i just put them on the sides
This is what i has been digging on youtube for 2 years( sorry for bad grammer)
pretty bloody awesome dude. Honestly, would love to have a game with you at some point, been watching a lot of your videos. Should get ksp multiplayer mod
It's been a long time since I peeked at that, is it mostly working now?
Yeah man, it's actually working weirdly well. Got a kraken drive working on there as well. Mad stuff. Add me on discord if you're interested in having a game though, tempted to set up a dedi. discord: @Hawk#1999
@@Rocketman679 Hey good to see you are growing fast, you have great KSP content! I was wondering if you would be interested in doing a in-depth video on the Kraken drive (not the Z-drive) as the Z-drive does not work for console players and the K-drive may be able to work for us.. Just a thought, if not then no worries.
@@TheCrazyCanuck you mean the landing gear kraken drive? I haven't played with that one yet but be sure I'll make a video when I do! I put videos out in bursts after building and designing stuff, lately it's been shuttles (expect a video on asymmetric craft soon 😁) but I want to do more videos about the technical tidbits of the game too, stuff like this
@@Rocketman679 Yes sir that's what I personally thought might work for the console players, looking forward to the next video. I try to recreate as many as possible but I find a lot of KSP UA-camrs tend to speed up their builds and then put the download file in the description, but as I am a console player I can not download it. Thanks for responding.
Thanks very helpful
Wow this is epic
Fun fact: KSP has an ambient light slider! Never rendezvous in the dark again!
hi
awesome video :D
69th comment and best full stock Shuttle replica ive seen
i feel that too i’ve tried to build shuttles and use them in my realistic save but they are just too much of a pain and aren’t efficient enough to use in LKO operations
Since yours is the most similar build I’ve seen to the design I have, I’d like some advice from you as far as rcs placement, and the gravity turns. I’ve found it’s easier just to get to orbit before I even try to make maneuvers to rendezvous.
Is this career mode? Great build!
those SRB flew out like bullets, shame in stock you probably couldnt do more about it
I gave up on shuttles can't fly them so I got a fusion engine and made a ssto shuttle no big orange tank for me nice work.
Another pair of engine of orbiter is named OMS, Orbital Maneuvering System
I use for reentry (shuttle) a little prop core on the back with a 45°pitch retrograde nose up😊😉
You know that's a really clever idea, usually I just deploy the flaps but an additional docking port weighs basically nothing
You should get Kerbal Engineer Redux, it really helps with things like the shuttle with a high torque. It shows you the torque in specific stages so it will be much easier tweaking things to be just right, hope i could help!
Separating the stages out by hand is pretty easy, tbh I build my craft in the order I have to tune it in, so it's fairly straightforward to tune now that I know what I'm doing. I'm actually uploading a mini series right now where I share all my tricks to making them fly steady, no mods needed!
@@Rocketman679 alright then, just keep Kerbal Engineer in mind, it's very useful but if you have a solution that works then keep on using it!
@@Rocketman679 You should try it seriously. It has SO MANY great features. It doesnt do things for you like mechjeb, which is a bit cheaty.
Imagine if that part did hit the Shuttle and you got that on camera.
Imagine how long it took him to build that Launch Control Tower.
By the looks of it not too long
"Oh i finnaly did the first part!" *ALT + MOUSE1 CLICKS INTENSIFIES*
How can you build this massiv structures like the launch tower without getting 3fps?
Everytime I try to build something with many parts it starts to lagg
Are you playing on a laptop? Ksp is a cpu heavy game so having a fast desktop cpu helps a lot
@@Rocketman679 laptop works just fine for me. Getting a PC, so that will be fun
You Got +2 Subs
i love building towers
How did u make that launch tower
What did you do to the wings to not rip off at landing? It keeps happening to me no matter how many struts and autostruts I add to it
With just about any aircraft you want to attach the landing gear to the fuselage, and then move it out under the wings. The wings themselves are light weight and not very strong
@@Rocketman679 managed to fix the issue, same as you said. Still thank you very much for the reply!
How did you make the tower?
How do you fly it?, like the controls im kinda new to KSP
Check The Rocket Book Thing at right. It Will Help You
Shuttles are always a bit of a pain to fly, especially with stock SAS. Maybe try mechjeb Smart A.S.S, or maybe use the kOS autopilot mod with your own pid.
YES!! You cant fly these manually in KSP-RO.

I can’t find the orange nose for the external tank at all. Ps4.
You may be using the wrong size, this is the kerbodyne s3 tank. I think the s4 doesn't have that nose
@@Rocketman679 Okay thanks! I need to check it out. By the way very very good videos!
try to launch hubble if you can
Ooooh I forgot about the hubble I should totally make a replica
How did you make the nose cones
They're just a tank adapter and regular nosecone. There's a little bit of fuel on top of the SRB
Damn, i cant load the craft file because some things are missing
Do you have both DLC? This is a pretty complex build and I'm sure I used parts from both
Tutorial?
Check out my shuttle build tutorial series! It's not a replica but I go through the theory and aerodynamics of how to build a shuttle
Dropped the SRBs a bit too early lol
You can't really compare the real space shuttle with the ksp version, the liquid hydrogen used in the main tank makes things way easier, you can see that if you play realism overhaul. Anyway, I loved your launch tower, any chance you can show us with more details?
Did you fill the ore tank
Yep it's up there for ballast
@@Rocketman679 okay
I love this recreation it’s amazing, but Why didn’t you use monopropellant on the OMS Engines ? In the space shuttle the AJ10’s (OMS) engines used monopropellant fuel instead of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen like in your recreation! The two bumps behind the OMS engines are the moon propellant fuel tanks in the real shuttle.
Actually, the space shuttle OMS used hypergolic bipropellant (hydrazine/nitrogen tetroxide) which KSP has no analog for, so I just chose the bipropellant engine with the closest isp and gave it the correct amount of fuel to match the real shuttle's oms delta-V
buddy aj 10s dont use monopropellant.

Collab?
So, have you got hit by some interplanetary junk yet...
The Shuttle was a great idea until Nixon got his Kennedy hating hands on it and slashed the budget to the point that it wasn't really good at anything. The original Shuttle (called the Cadillac Model) was a huge winged booster and a smaller orbiter, 100% reusable.
bro its not 100% stock you use the dlc so is 50% stock
Nah dlc aren't mods
@@Rocketman679 yea you are right sorry
Shuttles are always fun! Center of thrust is key.
