I’m Autistic with an anxiety disorder and depression and to be honest I don’t care if I feel better because of a placebo effect because my blanket makes my life easier. I started out with a lap pad and shoulder wrap though to see if I found weight calming because my blanket was very expensive, although it does have a lifetime guarantee.

I myself have Aspergers Syndrome (form of Autism) and Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), and 'for me' a weighted blanket is very calming and deep pressure is good for SPD symptoms as well. I also find that without one the other sensations (like sheets and blankets) overwhelm me, which as you can assume isn't good for sleeping. Overall I love my weighted blanket, but they definitely aren't for everyone, my OT would probably agree.

A lot of the people I know with Autism Spectrum Disorder use or have used weighted blankets, some find it comfortable, some don't, I've personally never tried it (Also Autistic, former Asperger Diagnosis).
I personally like to be in a position where I'm restricted in motion, like putting one leg over the other, sitting on one of my legs, leaning against walls, pulling in my legs why sitting on a couch, etc.
I think it has something to do with having constant feedback on and control over where my limbs are located and being able to control the most dominant sensation in a part of my body, giving me a sense of control over a situation, but I'm basically just guessing.
IIRC SPD isn't considered a separate diagnoses here in the Netherlands, but, now that I'm reading up on it, I probably do qualify. (also got a DCD diagnosis)

Two nights ago I was trying to sleep and I thought to myself “idk why but for some reason the lack of blankets on top of me now is giving me more anxiety than usual”. So I hopped on to amazon and looked for blankets....that’s how I found out about weighted blankets! I’ve never bought one but now that I’ve found out about them I’m really hoping I get one for my birthday because I used to relieve my anxiety by stacking up pillows around me, essentially creating a similar hug effect on my back, but this weighted blanket idea sounds more convenient and simple than essentially building a pillow fort every night.

Hypothesis: weighted blankets of at least 13.5kg will be beneficial to the sleep quality of consistently troubled sleepers.
You need a baseline first. A couple weeks where people merely record regular sleep patterns, after using lightweight (normal) blankets provided to them by the people conducting the study, so the weight is consistent. Also weigh the blankets the people would normally use, to compare with the before and after weighted blanket phases. You need a lot of people with roughly the same weight bed spreads for the strongest start, who are all known for troubled sleep of some sort. If you want a really clean sample, rule out particular groups from testing first, to get the most normalized baseline possible and rule out as many anomalies as possible. Testing on other types of troubled sleepers (diagnosed insomniacs, autistic spectrum, etc.), should be done in groups of similar individuals for consistent results. A hotel is smart too because all the beds and rooms are the same, it removes a lot of variables that would need to be accounted for in the home. A facility may be better though, and I imagine keeping people in different groups from talking to each other would be beneficial so they do not influence each other accidentally. Probably the easiest way to do this is just to test one subset at a time.
And double that group size. One subset of groups in which they are told the blankets improve or worsen sleep, who do have weighted blankets; one subset of the two groups told the above respectively but who do not have weighted blankets. And then another subset, told nothing. Again, half of the total group are given weighted blankets, half given none. And then do these tests for a series of two week at a time.
Then have the patients all return to normal unweighted sleep for two weeks as well.
That would be a good way to start this off, I think. Two weeks may be too short of a time span, though. Maybe one month per cycle. But the ethical implications of possibly depriving people of so much sleep for so long makes me wonder if it would be taken out of consideration. Maybe longer periods of study would be allowed if two week intervals prove harmless, especially if the blankets ARE, in general, beneficial to sleep.
And we can't forget, we need a big group of people who normally sleep just fine to also conduct this exact same test with the same parameters. THIS would be the control group, to help more concisely eliminate how much is placebo. Just testing troubled sleepers alone may influence results because of their bias towards WANTING better sleep. The variable group is anyone we expect the blanket to have an effect on (troubled sleepers). The control group are people we do not expect the blankets to have an effect on (regular sleepers).
THAT could possibly be an effective study!

I think it has to do with the fact the blankets kinda restricts you. The weight applies pressure onto your chest, back, and limbs which gives us a relaxing feeling. Like with being swaddled, the restriction makes us feel safe and secure which lowers our heart rates allowing us to relax and fall asleep better.

I'm autistic (with sensory processing disorder) and have an anxiety disorder. My weighted blanket is my favorite possession! It's sooo comfy. I suspect there's more to it than placebo, if only because myself and (from what I've heard) many people with sensory disorders started piling on heavy layers of quilts and blankets long before individually finding out the proposed benefits of weighted blankets. I love not having to do that anymore, because a single weighted blanket is much cooler and better ventilated than a thick pile of layered blankets. You're right about the expense, though; they do NOT come cheap.

I have anxiety and use a weighted blanket. It feels weird when I don't use it now. It's like something is missing and it's kind of scary like I'm going to float off into the darkness. Well, the weight is missing obviously, but I think it's probably comforting to people because it's like being hugged and makes them feel grounded (the deep-pressure thing). Couldn't scientists somehow measure hormones like oxytocin to see if that increases or if adrenaline or cortisol levels, etc. decreases? I'm not sure *how* they would measure those things, but if they do they might find something interesting. Of course, like you said, they still wouldn't be able to see if it's the placebo effect or not, but they might be able to see *what* is changing in the body to create the relaxed effect. Besides, would it matter if it's a placebo or not? Isn't that a bit like saying, "What if the effects of hugs are a placebo?" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I mean, sure it costs money, but so can another human. Also, it is hard for some people to find someone who wants to hug them (especially through the entire night). Then there are some people who don't like hugs from other people but still like weighted blankets and/or "hug vests."

The closest control for a study would be telling people who haven't already heard of this that a weighted blanket makes you more stressed or angry or restless and that's what you're trying to test. It still wouldn't be perfect but it could give a broad idea of how much is placebo and how much is physiological.

I used to use 20-30 blankets on my bed (this was before weighted blankets were a thing, let alone mainstream) and I just knew that more blankets=better sleep. So it couldn't have been a preconceived notion of what I thought the effect would be. Cuz I was a kid, hoarding blankets like they were gold and I a dragon.
I now have 2 weighted blankets and my housemates have their blankets back.
I also wake up with all my blankets still on my bed which is an improvement.
You can find handmade ones on Etsy that support disabled people and their families (better color choices/softer materials) and slightly cheaper ones on Amazon. Try to find ones with glass beads if you also use a heated blankets- just in case (also put any heated blankets- under your fitted sheets and weighted blankets over yourself as a fire precaution)

Fun fact. Children's weighted blankets are only about 15-18lb, and I find them more relaxing than the heavier 25 to 30 lb ones (but that's because I have severe anxiety around feelings with being smothered or trapped. Yay!)
But they tend to be cheaper the lighter you go. If you aren't worried about dishing out the money, I recommend getting one with a removable cover like my brother has. Washing one without a cover is there a difficult because it can cause the beads to be displaced or come out of the blanket entirely, or even damaged your washer. But if you don't mind putting it over a different blanket and just doing your best to keep it clean, I found a children's one that weighs 16.5 lb and is a twin and it was originally $45 but I got it for like $28 + $5 shipping in an online black Friday deal last year.
So keep your eye out at that time of year if you want deals on these!
I got mine from Kohl's I think, but I'm sure other places will have good sales on them too

My son was born with Sensory issues, (part of the autism spectrum, but not full on autism). He also does not have ADHD either. He is overly sensitive to the material he wears in his clothes, to the feel of foods that go in his mouth (which means he is a very picky eater) and he is sensitive to the materials on his body. When he was younger I used to "brush" or rub his back in order to help sooth him to sleep. He discovered his fathers big heavy winter blanket when he was around 6 years old, and he now sleeps under that blanket all year round - even in the summer. He LOVES the feeling of a weighted blanket. I would have to go with the deep pressure sensation that Hank describes for why this works for those with certain sensory issues. I also have a big heavy blanket, but mine only comes out at winter time. In the summer I sleep under a sheet. The weighted blanket is mostly to help sooth those with sensory issues - which can include those with autism and ADHD. You can read books such as - The Out of Sync Child by Carol Stock Kranowitz. This book was a LIFESAVER for me. Without it, I would never have been able to figure out what was wrong with my son. He has never been officially diagnosed with any disorder, so I could never get any official Occupational Therapy for him, (which is how sensory issues are managed but not cured) but this book helped me to be able to deal with (and manage) his issues and now he is doing very well as a teenager. One last thing - most kids with sensory issues cannot handle large crowds, so dumping them into a large school is a huge no-no. My son did very well in a small elementary school. (less than 200 kids from K-8), but eventually had to be removed from a large high school (over 800 kids G9-12) because he hated the crowds. He is now being homeschooled.

I wouldn't say it's a placebo in general. While having a anxiety attack I was given one to use as I was going to lay down on the sofa and try to relax a bit. There was no mention of it being used for that. I first sat with it wrapped around me and began to calm down, then laid down with it and began calming down quicker than normal. The next time it happened I actively sought out this blanket. That was the day I was told that they were made for that, when I had mentioned how the "heavy blanket calmed me down". They responded with "well yeah, that's what they're used for".

Back in Ye olde days, people tended to use sturdy woollen blankets. Woollen blankets are H E A V Y. Sometime around early 70s continental quilts/ doonas/ duvets came along... all nice and light and fluffy like sleeping under a cloud. And people began to associate feather weight with comfortable sleeping. Then ultra light microfibres came along making lovely snuggly silky and even lighter but warmer blankets became de rigueur. And then some sleep disturbed individuals (some of whom presumably had autism or anxiety) started using grandma’s old satin edged pure wool blankets... doubled over for warmth. And Lo and behold, these intrepid visitors to the past noticed they slept more soundly, had less crappy dreams, and felt like their emotional support 4paws was with them, even when s/he wasn’t actually there.
Hurrah! Eureka! these blanket returners exclaimed! But.... how difficult it was to purchase ordinary, heavy woollen blankets from regular stores! We must find a way!
Ah ha! some (possibly autistic) entrepreneurs quoth. We shall repurpose the less useful continental quilt/ doona/duvet/ microfibre faux fur throw. We shall thread some chains through the filling pockets of aforementioned quilt - as no longer available are the cool lead weighted ribbons that were once used to keep terylene curtains from flapping in the breeze.... Ta Da! This works just fine! We shall go forth and buy cheap chains and thread them into cheap Kmart quilts, and sell them for a packet. And like a Thneed, these new fang led weighted blankets are now what everyone needs!
(Full disclosure: I am an autistic person, and parent to 3 autistic young adults, and this is kinda our story... minus the entrepreneurial spirit. Damn!)

I have autism and I sleep with a weighted blanket every night. But I also use a pressure vest during the day. For people with Autism we used pressure therapy a lot and it's not just in the form of a weighted blanket. We use pressure vest because with autism behavior issues and anxiety can happen at any moment so anything that can relax us at any time is beneficial. There are many types of pressure vest that we use like weighted vest, strap vest and air pressure vest. So we have a quiet few ways of achieving pressure therapy and this is what occupational therapist and behavioral health specialist aim to achieve. Pressures therapyis one of the most effective non medicating way of helping people with Autism readjust to their surroundings and what's going on. For me I know I cannot handle change going on so that typically triggers me in quite a way.

I’ve always loved having people sit or lay on my legs. Like when my sister and I were kids I would lay on the couch and she would tell me to move, I would say no, and she would sit on me instead but I didn’t care because it felt good. 😂 My mom got me a 15 lb weighted blanket for Christmas and I fall asleep any time I use it!

Placebo effect can be tested, but needs a bit of caution: Remember, this is about a very subjective feeling anyway, so even if it's "only a placebo" it seems like that's exactly the intention here. To trick the body into thinking it's getting hugged when it's not. Basically the blanket is a placebo for a hugging person (or something else).
That being said, the placebo effect can be tested: Find a few people who don't know anything about weighted blankets, then you'll randomly give them either a weighted blanket or a "magical blanket" that you claim has some special scientific effect in it to help you sleep better, but in reality it's just a normal blanket. This would test for the placebo-effect on the idea of a sleep-improving, new blanket type, but it would not account for the placebo effect on "heavy thing makes me feel comfortable".

As a small child my parents always 'tucked me in' so that I was hugged tightly by my bedding. As a teenager I chose to sleep with many blankets which made my bedding heavier. In my adult years I've come to sleep only with a sheet and a single comforter. But as an adult I don't sleep well. I might give weighted blankets a try.

I always assumed it makes the body feel relaxed because it can feel like a hug. Or because it reminds them of being wrapped up all snug when they were babies in their mother's arm. And it takes the brain back to a time when they were safe and secure during rem sleep. I sleep with lost of blankets on my bed, but that's mainly cause I'm always cold and I do sleep better when I'm warm and feeling at least some weight of blanket on top of me.

I want one, that’s why I’m watching this. I have severe anxiety/ptsd, so normally I pile blankets and a comforter and pillows...which btw gets really hot in the summer even with a/c....but I just can’t sleep with just a sheet and blanket or a light quilt. Feels oddly ‘unsafe.’ Maybe these weighted blankets are less hot🤷🏼‍♀️-I’m def gonna try it.

I think the best way to get rid of placebo is to just say "we are doing a study to see what helps people sleep better, light blankets or heavy ones." Instead of telling people "we want to see if heavy blankets help you sleep better." If you tell them its a 'this or that' rather than a 'does this work?' people wont know which one is "Supposed to be better."

I have autism, chronical stress and anxiety and i Got a 7kg chain weighed blanket which is pretty warm but it helps me sleep. (I Got it when ingas 11 and then it wasnt good for me to have a heavier blanket) I was 11 when i Got it, im now 13, and then i only slept 2-3 hours pr. Night, now i sleep 7-9 hours (mutch better for my age). I also tried one with balls but it was SOOOOO noisy my autistic brain screamed. So chains are Best for me. For me it feels like my mom hugging me which was the only calling thing before i Got the blanket. I also dont have as many stress and anxiety attacks (hard to breath, not being able to see, crying etc.) i do believe it Can relieve stress and anxiety (etc) for SOME people, not everyone. My mom tried my blanket and hated it, so did my brother, but my dad liked it"

A possibility cheaper alternative to weighted blankets: get/make a denim quilt. My mom had a couple of denim quilts that I LOVED using as a kid because the extra weight was soothing to me. This was before weight blankets were a thing by the way, so no placebo effect here!

I wonder if it helps because humans are naturally a grouping species and heavy blanket might make you feel like you’ve got other people with you whether it be they’re holding you or are tucking in with you, putting more pull on the blanket. For example, I sleep way better when I have my boyfriend next to me, but when I sleep alone, I constantly wake up during the night and sleep way worse. Might have to try it to see if it gives me the same feeling of security my boyfriend gives me

Well, we can work the other way: The lightest sleep I had was under the thinnest blankets and my standard every day blanket is gigantic compared to the bed and is quite heavy by the dead weight on all sides, it serves me well. Even if it's a placebo thing with the really heavy blankets, it still counts, because it works. Better sleep, better people, give them people the lead!

Have you ever gone to the dentist for X-rays and they put a lead cover on you? Every time that cover went on, I relaxed right away and stayed still throughout the X-rays.
I wonder if it has something to do with having a bit of resistance so that my body doesn't have to resist moving in a "plain - air" or non - resistive environment.
    Just a thought.
