My pops is also in prison. He’s not a bad man. He just made some mistakes. Says his biggest regret is that he didn’t spend more time with us. This scene hit me hard when I first watched it. Johnnys dad reminded me of my own.
Every time I see this slip or part in the movie I tear up. Not for the physical aspect of it but the mental aspect the fact that the father is trapped in a prison and can't see his son fly to the top. My father is also trapped in a prison but a prison of drugs and I wish he'd break out to see the man I've become today even through all the hardships and the passing of my grandmother. I'm still standing.

Never been one to cry watching movies. Not Marley and Me, Not Pursuit of Happiness, or Up, Green Mile, Schinder's List, etc etc. But for some reason this scene from a up-beat and joyous kid's movie fucking wrecks me every time without fail. It's the perfect storm.
The son throughout the movie has to balance his father's great expectations while trying to manage his own desire to pursue a career in music. And at such a pivotal moment in the movie it really adds to the tension. The song itself really captures that exact moment. The song's lyrics show a sense of resilience and defiance in the face of adversity; which is the kid's struggle to break free from his father's expectations. Then all of the visual excitement going on and the noticeable enthusiasm he has when performing builds up the scene of his dad's reaction so perfectly.
The father's reaction to the overpowering talent and determination his son portrays completely erases his preconceived notions and expectations. The moment of acceptance helps encapsulate the kid's breakthrough during his performance. Breaking free of the need for acceptance, done so on his own terms; without directly trying to show his father either.
I don't know how the directors/screen-writers intended for it to be perceived by their audience. Mainly because it's a movie for children. I can get behind that it doubles as a scene of empowerment that the average child can grasp as well as an in-depth build up of emotion that a more mature mind can recognize... for some reason it's so hard for me to explain it and I hope everyone can get what im saying... But i just can't believe how underlooked this scene is. I've never once heard anyone else express how much this scene meant to them until i came to this comment section. |
I hope all the son's/daughter's/children that came here that also live under great expectations can break free of the burden casted upon them.
I didn't want to include this in my intial comment, because not often do people really care about some random on the internet. But never has a scene in a movie spoken to me better. It's funny, The kid and his dad in a weird way remind me of my father and I so much. The broad shoulders, Facial hair, and big head were passed down to me through genetics. Honestly, that's really the only thing I can recognize in myself that remind me of my father. I also got passed down his expectation of becoming the man he sees in himself.
I come from a family of Commercial Refrigeration Technicians. it's a trade that my grandfather (dad's dad) found himself in, in what seems like his last resort to provide for his family. He wanted to work with cars and whatnot but time caught up to him and he had to find something to make money because He and my grandmother started a family so young. (For a better perspective, I was born in 2005/Dad born in 1988/grandfather born in the later 60s). What's ironic is that neither my grandfather nor father wanted me to join this line of work. My father always saw me as someone who worked a desk job, or an accountant as he always assumed; which to me always felt like a insult as he would always describe those people as lesser of a man than him.
Without sounding like im looking for sympathy or whatever I didn't have an amazing childhood either. I really don't have any regret, or side-effects of it like trauma/depression/etc. But my mom was a drunk/party-drug girl who had no care to be a mother but always cared to one-up my dad by trying to retain custody of me. Like a trophy of accomplishment. My mother won any custody battle up until the day she stopped showing up because my dad is a convicted felon with a large history of aggression and all that fun stuff. During all that tenure from 3 to 11 years old I always felt like I was torn between both families. Never felt like I had a person or middle-ground to go to. Everyone hated each other, and no one seemed to put aside anything for a kid everyone was so worked up about.
But nonetheless, with everything that I guess went wrong.. none of it amounted to the feeling of always letting my dad down. I wasn't good at football like him (or any sport really), wasn't as good at math as he was, wasn't as driven as he was when he was my age, never showed the traits he wanted to bestow upon me. I felt like really just putting my head down and focusing on just one thing to make him proud. The one thing that meant the most was His business. So I went to a trade school for highschool, completely rejecting all of the friends I had made along the way in life. I tried as hard as my lazy-ass could for 4 years of highschool. Disregarding the "Golden Years" of my life. Never went to a party, never had a true-love during highschool, honestly never really did anything.
Then my time came.. To finally put all of that effort into action by working for him. My senior year I went out on "Cooperative Education" meaning half of the time i was supposed to be in school was spent working, for him. Instead of being in school I was able to work full-time. But, I've honestly never let him down so much in my life I guess. I'm not even good at what I tried hard to obtain (and i've seriously never tried hard with anything. anything I've ever been good at came naturally)

This scene speaks to me because, with everything mentioned above, I guess I can look at it positively because I'm still (stupidly) giving it my best shot day in and day out. Even though I can't promise that I can out-perform the people around me or promise that I can do my best everyday... I still show up. i'm still chasing the last thing I have to prove.

I just love that his dad goes from being confused to being ecstatic because his son is doing good only to remember that the last time he talked he told his son that he’s not his son, and literally breaks out of jail to make it right

I can relate to Jonny in this song. My dad when I was 9-10 put me through human trafficking. I got away when I was 10.Then when I was 16 a court case was filed on my dad. Almost my entire family turned their back on me. They demanded I tell the truth and not lie when I was telling the truth in the first place. My dad is now in jail for 5 years. And idk how well my relationship with my family is going to be but I’m still standing and I’m still here after all this time.

At one time, it would have meant the world to me to hear my Dad say he was proud of me. And though I may have given up on that dream, I guarantee that my own kids won't ever have to share it. I let them know I'm proud of them every opportunity I get, which unfortunately isn't all that often anymore.... but hey, at least I'm still standing, right? ❤️🩹
I love this scene, it's honestly really powerful the message the song conveys here metaphorically. Johnny is still going despite his dad being in jail and treating him like a failure, and then Ash being shown partway through a similar message could be said for her, she's still going despite her ex boyfriend being an a-hole to her ever since that audition in her first scene and of course them breaking up.
