  • We know you love blind tastings so today we are performing a Bourbon blind tasting using small batch barrel bourbon.
    Our bourbon blind tasting includes:
    1. Larceny Small Batch Kentucky Straight, 92 Proof Bourbon
    2. 1792 Small Batch Kentucky Straight, 93.7 Proof Bourbon
    3. Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight, 90 Proof Bourbon
    4. Elijah Craig Small Batch Kentucky Straight, 94 Proof
    We run this bourbon blind tasting without having ever tasted two of the bourbons in our list: 1972 Small Batch and Larceny Small Batch. We purchased them just for this blind tasting event and never used them prior so it's interesting to try to pick out which brand is which in this bourbon blind tasting.
    You love bourbon? You should watch this to gain some exposure to what different flavors and brands offer in terms of oak, potency and spice...with maybe a bit of rye like flavor.

      Not really. Many have such complexity of aroma that you just gotta have to work a couple of times with it to get it all sorted out. Hmm ok maybe with bourbons you’re right. Except Woodford Double Oaked and bookers 6y every bourbon I tasted so far was atleast to 70% the same.

    My favorite bourbon is Woodford Reserve. I think it has great complexity and a spicy quality that i normally dont want in a bourbon but works so well by itself or in a drink.
    I will be trying the 1792 since its the only one out of the four I havent tried.

      Woodford has a really nice caramel-like sweetness to it. I don't seem to get as much of a burn off of it as some other whiskeys; although, that may be because I'm just used to it. Basil Hayden's is great for anyone who likes rye. It's a high rye bourbon, so it really brings together the best of both worlds, in my opinion.

      Buffalo Trace is by the same company as Weller's. They sold to a overseas company and are trying to supply a new market along with ours. They have to wait for their whisky's to age to meet the demand. It's a nightmare for us to get Buffalo Trace or Weller's in at our liquor store, and will sale out within a week (Not just us, the whole town. Most stores are limited to a couple cases.) Having to wait another couple months to get more in the city.

    • @phtevenmolz5030

      @@OhPhuckYou what? They have been owned by Sazerac since 1992, who has their HQ in Louisiana and runs their business out of Kentucky. Their lack of supply is thanks to the bourbon boom over the last decade and a half and how popular Buffalo Trace is. Nothing to do with anything overseas. They realized awhile back that their sales increased dramatically, so the basically rationed their barrels and increased production. They don't want to run out and they want more to be on shelves than before once aging is complete in the next couple of years for the younger batches.

    Four Roses Small Batch is typically my go-to bourbon. Wild Turkey is the girlfriend's favorite. If we were to pick on together, we'd probably choose Knob Creek. Also recently tried 1792 and cinnamon immediately sprung to mind. Tried it in some chilled Fresh Market Christmas Blend coffee (basically vanilla, cinnamon and clove-flavored coffee) and it was quite tasty.

  • @JoshChristiane
    @JoshChristiane 3 роки тому

    Tequila is aged significantly less time than bourbon, no comparison. Reposado is usually aged 2 to 12 months, anywhere in that range, but almost always under a year. Anejo is typically a year or more, sometimes even going to 2 years (but rarely). If you think about it, tequila can be really overpriced sometimes for what it is. Bourbon is a steal by comparison when you look at how long it has to age.

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  3 роки тому +1

      However, Tequila's process of harvesting is also not a simple one, especially some varietals of agave, which can be a substantial amount of work to harvest. The cost is often associated with a different point of its creation process, not just the resting time.
      The resting on tequila, and rum is shorter due to the climate/humidity and storage of the liquid vs colder weather climates, so it's definitely a faster age, yes.
      The biggest cost for many tequila brands is the agave itself, during periods in which agave is scarce (due to diseases, shortages, heat waves, etc.) the prices for tequila rise considerably as it becomes tough to produce. That is, of course, no excuse for some of the pricing on some products (especially those that don't use a full cook process).

    • @JoshChristiane
      @JoshChristiane 3 роки тому

      @@cmcocktails You're totally right. A full agave plant can take upwards of 10 years to grow, so that would explain some of the harvest cost. However, agave plants themselves aren't particularly expensive and do have a huge yield (sometimes 200 pounds of liquid agave nectar per bulb). Most tequilas are made with very similar juice at the starting stage, yet some tequilas are a multitude more expensive than others, and a really big part of that is branding to be honest. Some tequilas are justifiable priced, others are far overpriced in my humble opinion. With that said though I suppose one could claim the same about any liquor or even luxury brand. Thanks for your response!

    • @cmcocktails
      @cmcocktails  3 роки тому +1

      It depends on the agave, the Tobala species of agave takes 17 years to mature, and has much lower yields, a single liter for a piña which is 7x less than something like Espadin or Blue Weber (in the case of "Tequila"). That gives the cost (often $100+ for a bottle of that mezcal) a much more steep increase; plus, it's only grown in the wild.
      But, blue weber agave should have about the same maturity across the board. In the case of tequila, you can get slightly different subtle flavors no doubt from brand to brand depending on the soil content and such, but they should all land around the same price tag for the three categories of processing: diffuser, autoclave, oven cooked with price increase as you move from cheap diffuser product to cooked agave product.
      Branding is going to make a big difference (reference example: Casamigos, which has no justification at its price point). And, of course, how much they push into marketing will matter as well (case: Patron). Much like a red wine, you can get a fine ass tequila for $35 if it's an unknown brand, but you'll pay through the nose for celebrity endorsements. In the end, both probably came from the same damn distillery.

      @@cmcocktails Great information! Thanks for all of that, some of it I didn't know yet. So far I'm LOVING the Gran Centenario Anejo. You can get it where I live at Costco around $20 a bottle and it's absolutely superb for that price. I also enjoy Don Pilar and one of my favourite budget tequilas is aged in bourbon casks (Espolon Anejo). I'm really loving getting into the tequila world after spending so much time and money on bourbon.
