They will put waxy potatoes in tins. They are heat treated in the tin to sterilize, and they might be cooked before or during that sterilizing. They will explode even more dramatically if microwaved.
I've tried the really small tinned Baby New Potatoes before Dan... But as well as heating them up in a saucepan of water... I've also tried them in the deep fat fryer... And although they're nothing really special... The Fat (Beef Dripping) or Oil that you use can add a little extra taste to them... But i suppose that if you've run out of frozen Chips & Potatoes... It's something that someone could still use in an emergency if necessary. 👍
@@rickb3645 My grandkids love tinned new potatoes sliced and fried in oil and butter until golden brown (with anything but mostly omelette). Hi Gareth, with these tins, cut 90% of the lid and leave the other 10% of the lid attached, open it to let the contents out and then push the entire lid back into the tin, not all the way, just enough to contain the lid, minding fingers of course, this makes the sharp edges safe for disposal. I keep a few tins of spuds incase of emergency. Im planning on doing some later today with a frey bentos steak&kidney pie. If they explode, they likely needed pricking btw but they look nice. To season, dry abit with a cloth, put in a bowl, and season with oil and salt before you put in the airfryer. You could also get an aluminium foil container with some lard, and cook in that quite easily. Ive been getting them from tesco to use in the airfryer to cook anything which needs to be contained. The lids can also prevent things burning too fast, so you can cook slower if needed.
Tinned poratoes are great for putting in stews and cassaroles, especially if you're using a slow cooker (because they're already cooked and don't disintegrate easily being a waxy potato). I never tried roasting them, but now I know not to bother! We always used to have these as a kid when we were camping on holiday, so they are a bit or a nostalgic treat for me now and then, but they can't beat a fresh peeled potato!
I've used tinned potatoes many times as roasties both in the oven and the airfryer tho my faves and my families are fresh peeled par boiled potatoes drained and left to cool enough so you can handle them then toughen each one with a fork to make little spines like a hedgehog drizzle with sweet chilli dipping sauce sprinkle with paprika and ginger a little salt and black pepper cook in airfryer lovely crisp outside fluffy inside
Hi gaz , you cant beat a proper maris piper roast spud done in the oven. I boil mine first for about eight mins, with a table spoon of sea salt, and a t spoon of baking powder. Roasted in olive oil in oven topped with curry powder , garlic granuels- watever you want, lovely jubbly. Regards steve👍😜

Trying to make something tasty out of tinned spuds, is always a challenge. Aldi do little packets of roast potato seasoning & one of them would probably be ideal for these. Might try that.
Used to drop em into a chip pan many years ago, turned out great, for the time anyway. Now consider fresh spuds are cheaper but a tin in for emergencies is not a bad idea.
I use them all time at work in the same ninja foodie. I found you place them in the silver dish with a bit of oil first then pour them on. Then you add some crushed sea salt on them then air crisp / oven bake setting for 35 mins it turns out perfect.
Hello there sweet ♥ yes, I've tried it and yes, works don't forget the seasoning x take care Happy 😊 Sunday God bless, they need a preheated setting first

I always have few tins in cupboard for when I want a quick snack, as they already cooked just brown them in frying pan with salt & pepper lovely on own or with anything had them tuther day with cornbeef & sweetcorn
Years ago I used to put them in the chip pan and they was nice but like you said you didn't cook them long enough or season them or I reckon you might like them
I believe the Himalayan salt has the pink tinge to it, is due to several trace minerals from the mines in Pakistan. I hope you appreciate my take on why the salt is pink sir.
Ha ha, big Man, your face when you tried them say's it all, good of you to try them as I was going to but probably not now, thanks 👍 again for another excellent review Gareth
I just buy the frozen ASDA Crispy Roast Potatoes they are currently £1.10kg compared to the just essentials tinned potato at £1.11kg. I would avoid microwaving tinned potato's as they tend to explode making a mess. I heat the tinned new potato's and afew handfulls of frozen mixed veg in a sauce pan, heat them, drain them, return them to the pan add a knob or two of butter, salt / pepper / herbs toss the potato's and veg till well covered and serve. Cheapish and healthyish goes well with pork or chicken, i avoid beef as it is an arm a leg and your left nutsack for any half decent beef now.
I used to eat canned potatoes, and they do vary in quality. The best ones are Jersey new potatoes, but very expensive. I just use them in an emergency when I haven't got fresh potatoes. They do work if you steam them for 10 minutes, but immersing them in hot water is a no-no. They do work in home-made soups.
Not this time Gareth. Just par boil an ordinary spud, for 5-7 mins, toss in olive oil, sprinkle with semolina. Result is a crispy, tasty, fluffy roaster, Try it, perfection.
Interesting, living alone I open a can of spuds now and again. They are pre cooked in can all they need is heating, never boil them. Baking would normally overcook them. But try olive oil, might brown better. At the end of the day fresh spuds are best. Canned spuds are good for cold potato salad too, just add mayo, hard boiled egg chopped, parsley, chopped onion and salt. But you gave it a go champ, well done.
I think those potatoes at least looked nice and brown . I have an air fryer which I have not used yet! Always interested to see what you do with yours.
Hi Gareth, the video I watched says you need to cut the potatoes in half then they cook much better and are crispy, maybe you could do it again sometime, but like you oven roast spuds cooked in fat is the best, try beef dripping, spuds are amazing cooked in beef dripping, proper roast spuds 👍
Hi my mate who I used to work with years ago. Tried tob deep fat fry tinned potatoes big mistake. They literally exploded when the water trapped inside the spud turned to steam. Made one hell of a mess in the kitchen.
Hi. I tried doing that a few months ago but, I used the dehydrate option on my airfryer. It seemed to calm the popping down when on full cook and got a decent crisp. They have the tinned taste but still a good option
Whenever I am using tinned spuds I try to slice them or even dice them to give them cut edges to crisp up and ensure that they are fully cooked through. I quite like them diced and boiled, well drained and tipped into a frying pan or wok and liberally seasoned with salt and pepper and some shredded herbs(thyme or rosemary and garlic go well) and stir fried until crispy on the edge’s. Served with either vinegar or chilli sauce in a bowl and that’s it.
I've never been a fan of canned potatoes. Now that we know that animal fats aren't harmful in moderation, I suggest that you also try roast potatoes, or even home made chips using beef dripping (which is what fish and chip shops used way back when I was a kid) as with goose or duck the taste is outstanding! My dad would also mash potatoes with beef dripping, when he was making mince and tatties, that was also outstanding!! I haven't had mince and tatties for such a long time!!!....my mouth is watering now 😋
Hiya, I tried tinned spuds in the normal oven once in oil and they exploded too, made a rite flipping mess! Can't beat proper spuds as roasties tho and as u say in goose fat they're scrummy. We save them till Christmas
Micro wave steam bags cook veg in minutes, can slice up spuds evenly, cook for about 4 to 5 minutes, tip them out and mash with butter etc, or goose fat or whatever and airfryer to your required crispy ness, I can knock up tasty meals in no time, plus using less power. Great to learn from your comparison videos what is good value or not, l live on me tod and find your vids entertaining. I was 15 years a cook in the Merchant Navy, used to cooking in volume, seem to over do it cooking fo myself. Keep up the good work 👍
@Bald Foodie Guy - Try drying the potatoes more on tissue or a tea towel for longer, then liberally cover them in seasoning and oil in a bowl before air frying them. The drier the potato the better and fluffier the results that don't explode. Keep basting the potatoes every couple of minutes, as they have a tendency to dry out quickly and not brown, easy as dry fryers don't lose heat when opened, like normal ovens. I agree the larger the tinned potato, the better the overall results. Alternatively blanch cook some pealed and quartered potatoes (approx 10 mins) and allow them to steam dry on paper towels. Then brown as before in an air fryer. 👍🏻 Just my opinion, I could be doing it wrong. 😉
I have used tinned potatoes for years as a stand-by. I always boil them for a while first. As I don't think that the canning process heats them long enough to cook them properly. Try mixing a can of potatoes with a tin of chicken in white sauce, and a tin of peas and carrots. All mixed up together in the same pan.
usually rinse them off before and dry, liquid can taste a bit bad. then put them in a plastic bag, pour in some olive oil and spices, massage the bag so that they get oil on the entire surface. become like crispy bubbles on the surface. but then there are different brands that taste differently. I usually buy canned potatoes when I want fried potatoes, they are already cooked.
I have found these half decent 'in an emergency' if you drain and bung a tin of them into a thick onion gravy on the hob tbh. Served with a bit of meat n veg.
it is the water absorbed into the tinned potatoes that causes them to explode. I once had it happen to me when I dropped them into an oil filled deep fat fryer.
Hey mate, this is the ultimate roast potatoes hack: Microwave potatoes (without skin) for 10 minutes. Layer plenty of goose/duck/beef dripping on the bottom of a tin foil sheet. Air fry at 180°c until you reach your desired crispiness, you can also flip them (I do mine for 15 minutes)
I still remember the look on the checkout girl when my sister and I went shopping and we bought 10 cans of canned potatoes, it was way back in 1977,our parents moved from north derbyshire to St Austell in Cornwall, leaving us to live alone. They were HORRIBLE !!
I love ❤️ essential food from Asda and I buy these potatoes they are ok 👍 I use mid week if I’m making something quick and easy thank you 🙏 for another great video
try the James Martin recipe and use fresh potato boil the cool a little oil season the come out magic in air fryer. In Australia they say not to use tin potatoes in the air fryer on the tin
Thanks for trying this. Pity it didn’t work. As a way to save putting on the oven I wonder if microwaving chopped potatoes for a few minutes before adding oil and popping in the air fryer 🤔
Yeah, tinned potatoes are ok for a store cupboard standby, but probably not suitable for air frying/roasting as they are too waxy. I had a small tin to myself the other week, boiled, with a bit of roasted chicken and gravy, was alright but proper roasties would have been nicer. Got to give these things a go though.
i make these, i put peri peri seasoning on them, i cut them in half or quarters and they go brown/burnt edges more when smaller and cut in half instead of full rounded if you know what i mean, but there no good plain, defo need a seasoning as you said, i cant do without an air fryer now, use it almost daily, cheers
I always slice mine when I fry them. They need more cooking than that. They should have turned brown. Those potatoes are great in a stew. Sainsbury tinned potatoes don't explode.
Hello Gareth, Those waxy canned potatoes are the wrong type for cooking roast potatoes, you need floury potatoes for roasting, Floury potatoes will be crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy inside, perfect roasties. I use Himalayan pink salt all the time at home, it has nutrients that you just don't get with ordinary table salt.
You have been using the Air fryer for a while now, what's your views on the oil used when cooking, many are now saying use Avocado oil, because of the high flash point, I have not noticed any smoke or hint of burning with any oil, I normally use just a slight hint of cooking oil if required, perhaps I am not using as much as others, but no smoke coming from anything I have cooked.
They will put waxy potatoes in tins. They are heat treated in the tin to sterilize, and they might be cooked before or during that sterilizing. They have to hold up and not disintegrate into the water -so waxy potatoes have to be used. Waxy ones are not recommended for roasting, the floury ones have a good airy surface that crisps up well.
They will explode even more dramatically if microwaved.

Just my opinion, I could be doing it wrong. 😉
Cheers pal
Tinned potatoes in tomato soup😋
I have used tinned potatoes for years as a stand-by. I always boil them for a while first. As I don't think that the canning process heats them long enough to cook them properly. Try mixing a can of potatoes with a tin of chicken in white sauce, and a tin of peas and carrots. All mixed up together in the same pan.
Thanks for sharing
The canning process cooks them for at least 60 minutes so that can’t be the problem with hard potatoes
I use tinned potatoes , warmed up and additional mayo and herbs and put in salad, delicious..
usually rinse them off before and dry, liquid can taste a bit bad. then put them in a plastic bag, pour in some olive oil and spices, massage the bag so that they get oil on the entire surface. become like crispy bubbles on the surface. but then there are different brands that taste differently. I usually buy canned potatoes when I want fried potatoes, they are already cooked.
Cheers Leif 👍👍
I'm so cheap and common, but I love roast tinned potatoes!(season with rosemary.)
I have found these half decent 'in an emergency' if you drain and bung a tin of them into a thick onion gravy on the hob tbh. Served with a bit of meat n veg.
Cheers Paul 👍👍
if my electric goes off, im make a fire and wrap in tin foil for back up! great review love from cornwall as always
Love tin potatoes Gareth great video xx👍👍👍
Cheers xx
it is the water absorbed into the tinned potatoes that causes them to explode. I once had it happen to me when I dropped them into an oil filled deep fat fryer.
Cheers pal
Hey mate, this is the ultimate roast potatoes hack:
Microwave potatoes (without skin) for 10 minutes.
Layer plenty of goose/duck/beef dripping on the bottom of a tin foil sheet. Air fry at 180°c until you reach your desired crispiness, you can also flip them (I do mine for 15 minutes)
Love the tee shirt, I used to deliver to Wrexham lager in the 80s
great Tony was a gift
Props on that t-shirt!
I still remember the look on the checkout girl when my sister and I went shopping and we bought 10 cans of canned potatoes, it was way back in 1977,our parents moved from north derbyshire to St Austell in Cornwall, leaving us to live alone. They were HORRIBLE !!
💕 Oh I love tinned potatoes 🥔, just something oddly yummy about them, was gonna try it but then edited my comment when I heave the word explosion 😂💕
Gareth remember tin pototoes in action messing and Trying to eat hot pot mess in 3 mins haha
Got 2 tins of the potatoes in cupboard, I use them in Casseroles with frozen casserole mix from Farmfoods lovely with chicken
I love ❤️ essential food from Asda and I buy these potatoes they are ok 👍 I use mid week if I’m making something quick and easy thank you 🙏 for another great video
Thank you
i need to buy an air fryer, love these videos x
Thank you
Never tried tinned spuds in the Ninja but ordinary boiled spuds make great roasties in the Ninja, nice n crispy
I was really delighted to see Y Ddraig Goch on your tee shirt. I used to live in Porthmadog.
Love your show 🏴
You're welcome 😊
try the James Martin recipe and use fresh potato boil the cool a little oil season the come out magic in air fryer. In Australia they say not to use tin potatoes in the air fryer on the tin
Cheers Alan
Thanks for trying this. Pity it didn’t work. As a way to save putting on the oven I wonder if microwaving chopped potatoes for a few minutes before adding oil and popping in the air fryer 🤔
you're welcome
I’ve just tried this. Waiting for them to cool down a bit. They look alright😄
Haven’t heard ‘diddy’ for a few years 😁
Not bad. Could have done with 15 minutes in air fryer.
Cheers James
Loving the dragon on the t-shirt what's your connection to Wrexham if you don't mind me asking?
I got sent some gifts that t shirt was one of them Wrexham Lager also, showed them on one of my videos a few back 👍👍
I've never used tinned potatoes since, when frying some they started to explode
I always rough up the outside of the potatoes, then spray them with oil and season.
i make these, i put peri peri seasoning on them, i cut them in half or quarters and they go brown/burnt edges more when smaller and cut in half instead of full rounded if you know what i mean, but there no good plain, defo need a seasoning as you said, i cant do without an air fryer now, use it almost daily, cheers
Cheers
I always slice mine when I fry them. They need more cooking than that. They should have turned brown. Those potatoes are great in a stew. Sainsbury tinned potatoes don't explode.
thanks for the tips
Hello Gareth, Those waxy canned potatoes are the wrong type for cooking roast potatoes, you need floury potatoes for roasting, Floury potatoes will be crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy inside, perfect roasties. I use Himalayan pink salt all the time at home, it has nutrients that you just don't get with ordinary table salt.
Cheers David for the tips
Youv grown from strength to strength your channel pal, cost u less then 40p to create, very clever, brilliant content

Wrexham Lager shirt
@@BaldFoodieGuy ah I see x
You have been using the Air fryer for a while now, what's your views on the oil used when cooking, many are now saying use Avocado oil, because of the high flash point, I have not noticed any smoke or hint of burning with any oil, I normally use just a slight hint of cooking oil if required, perhaps I am not using as much as others, but no smoke coming from anything I have cooked.
We tried this recipe other week it worked out good very tasty potatoes
Great to hear!
