Replacing Hydraulic Cylinder Seals - Part 2 - Removing a stuck gland

  • So in part one I start the process of replacing the seals in my New Holland LB75B loader hydraulic tilt cylinder and run into issues removing the gland. This video I show you how I solved that using the peening method. Using a simple ball peen hammer, I am able to work the retaining wire out. This method was a life saver and is probably the best way to remove a stubborn hydraulic gland.
The peening method should work for all shapes and sizes of hydraulic cylinders. Peening is a common method used in welding and metal work. I hear people using cutting torches to heat up the gland and that can work, but you also risk warping the cylinder tube. You can also use a pipe wrench and a very large cheater bar, but you risk tearing up the gland and beating up the hydraulic cylinder rod. DO NOT HIT THE CYLINDER ROD. That is a big mistake.
The peening method should be all you need to do to remove that frozen up gland. Either locktite was used or you have rust in the gland, but the peening method will get it off.
Here is a post about someone talking about the peening method for gland removal: www.heavyequip...
Before you lose your mind trying to get a gland off, try this method. Let me know in the comments if this worked for you.
In the next video of this series, I talk about seal kits and how part number changes can give you a read headache.

Hell it worked, it’s hard to believe something that simple works. Did not even need a pipe wrench for most of them.

It sure does. It was the magic trick for this gland.

I get it, I talk too much and repeat myself. My wife says I am too detailed and need to get to the point. I will work on that. ( And sorry about the sniffles in this video. I try to edit them out usually but I guess I forgot to in this one. @#$@% allergies. )

You really really really need to listen to your wife. Since you did not, I stopped watching your videos. Made me mad.

Thank you. I hoped it helped. I have been cutting out as much as I can of the chatter I video now. It's crazy though, even when I know I am talking too much and I cut back; when I review the video there is so much more I end up cutting out. Apparently I just really talk too much. Anyway, Have a great day.

Try a medium sized air hammer if you have access to air. Get the accessory bit set.

@@SeidelRanch I was talking about this video and the couple before it. At this point, I gave up watching. You did eventually rebuild the gland but you never showed the detailed process that everybody needs to see before attempting to do it themselves.

That is a pretty good point.. Showing the actual peening would be useful. Perhaps consider a body cam and put it on time lapse for the stuff that takes a long time. 🙂Thanks again Seidel!
