How to Remove Hydraulic Cylinder caps
    5 techniques
Strong grip on the cylinder is very important ...
    1- wrench for hydraulic caps
This is the wrench designed to loosen hydraulic cylinder caps
Caps with threads glued with special glue ...
We will have to apply heat to remove the cap
All gaskets on the lid will be unusable
It is highly recommended to work the cylinders with plastic or rubber hammer
2- Extraction with a stillson wrench
Very hard caps we will need a lever
    3- Extraction with cobra pliers
4- Extraction by grasping the cover with a vice
5- Extraction to blows (this technique must be the last resource)

Thanks. I already got the spanner wrench, but it was light duty. Yours is definitely heavy duty. Good to see so many options. I like to use the pipe wrench and loosen it while it is still installed in a tractor, that way I don't have to use a vise.

Should mention that oil should be drained from cylinder and that both ports should be opened (not capped, plugged) so you're not fighting possible vacuum should the seals still have some life in them.

Yup, they can be stubborn. I had to use near all 5 of them over the years.
I never heard it called cobra pliers. We call them slip-joints or channel lock pliers.

Cobra is what knipex calls them. My favorite brand so far.

Us older people call them pump pliers ,that's what they were originally made for.

The cylinder was not turning in the vise because the vise made the cylinder oval, a round piston will not work in an oval cylinder, the cylinder should have been gripped at the far end preferably on the lug.

Great video, thanks for sharing! I have a quick question: For that specific type of threaded cylinder; how do you order the rebuild kit/O -ring set? I have a couple that are 4 in OD barrel diameter, 2 inch rod diameter and so far what I found is sets that do not include the seal shown on top of the threaded cap, other don't look too much as the wide bands yours has. by the way mine does not have a single notch but 4 holes in the perimeter of the cap located every 90 degrees. thanks.

working on a 6 ton Hyster... no luck yet. We did apply heat but maybe not enough yet. We do have the special hook wrench - heavy duty and modified to create the right angle (working on the cylinder while it's in the forklift truck). Even with a 2 m breaker bar it did not budge yet.

So what was the end result, how did you crack it open.... 5.5t Hyundai arm cylinder not wanting to come loose.

    • @bigbattenberg
      @bigbattenberg 10 місяців тому

@@imhard2please503 In the end we used a breaker bar. Hitting the wrench itself with a hammer does not work because the is too much flex in the system. When using a long bar the key is to get your body on the right height so you can put your weight behind it and make sure you don't fall down. We stacked pallets around the truck but this was not totally safe I must admit. What also helped is getting a heavy guy :)

The ram should be held in a press at the eye and not on the barrel for you ro crush it around the piston

THE BEST WAY TO REMOVE THE END CAP WITHOUT DAMAGING THE CYLINDER TUBING IS TO HOLD THE CYLINDER IN A VISE LIGHTLY BUT HAVE THE BOTTOM END IN A NICELY FIT PIPE OR ITS PIN THROUGH IT AGAINST THE BENCH , AS YOU PULL ON THE END CAP PRESSURE WILL BE ALL A THE MOUNTING PIN HOLE END .BETTER YET YOU SHOULD BRAKE IT LOOSE BEFORE YOU REMOVE IT OFF THE TRACTOR , BEFORE REMOVING THE THROUGH PIN.

Well, 1st you have to remove the cylender.
    2. Remove the locking bolst, if it has any.
    3. Twist off the end cap.
    Boom done.

You're lucky if they come off that easy.... let's see one where you have to use a torch and a 3ft cheater bar on an pipe wrench to break head gland loose.... nice video though👍hydrolics mechanics are under appreciated.... just remember your life in a man lift is dependent on how thorough your hydrolics technicians were
