And it was made for the German military!

Mercedes isn't unique in subcontracting vehicle assembly done all over the world. Sometimes a third party can produce a vehicle more cost effectively, especially when a low volume vehicle doesn't justify its production cost, but manufacturer still wants a presence in the vehicle segment. Magna Steyer also built BMW's E89 Z4.

@Blaise T Yeah I mean when you go into luxury car ownership expecting low coast of operation you should drive a Toyota or a Honda.
Had to do an estimate, too. That would be closer to 100k$ for fuel alone if you went 220.000 miles / 354.000km in Germany with that car. Gas prices are a lot higher here.

As far as i know they started as "Puch G" buildt by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in Austria.
Correct, In Austria
Yeah, the rest also isn't quite true. They where never build in France and the intention at first was also not for the military. The idea was to have a smaller version of the Unimog.
There are lots of inaccuracies in his history of the g wagen.
Americans don't know the difference.

One of the reasons I think I like this channel is we couldn't be more dimorphicly different. There is a German couple who took a Mercedes 300GD on a 557K miles road trip. So, congrats on the nice low mileage of your AMG.
Reminds me of guy in California who bought himself a Beetle new in '63, drove it for 1.6 million miles, and then donated it to a museum sometime in the '90s. (For reference, that is about how far the Earth travels in its orbit around the Sun each day.)
I think I met them last summer
I believe that German couple set a world record driving the World's Most Traveled car. The owner refused to take a cellphone. They started traveling back in the 90s and never stopped!
@Foto4Max so, as it turns out, 1.6 x 365 = 584

I have a 242,000 mile W210 E55 as my daily driver, it was one owner and came with a full MB dealer history, guy spent over £70,000 buying it and the same again over the 17 years he owned it. There’s another thing you can try mod: retrofit 3 point seatbelt for center position. It needs to be mounted from the roof. Then, probably a facelift kit to look as recent as possible. If your daily usage also intends for off-roading, then mod it as if it is G500 squared
There's just something that can't be explained about an older AMG G-Wagen ... the door locks, the side exhaust pipes, the faux interior, the clearly utilitarian underpinnings. Such a wonderful vehicle!
Hoovie is definitely living in the early 2000’s
Good times, no covid and the cars were cooler
It was a good time to be alive...a lot better than the 2020s, hahah!
You have got to be one of very few people in the world that was unaffected or obvious to the events of 2020. Very blessed obviously.
To be honest hoovie is a smart man he buys cars for cheap and fixes them for under 5 percent of the real value and the car runs great
The turn signals need guards because Mercedes actually values their use and feels that they need to be protected at all costs, unlike the folks at BMW...
+1. In the jungle, those guards protect the turn signals from branches and vines. In the US, they protect the Yuppy's G-wagon from getting scraped by the Starbucks ordering menu in the drive-thru lane. ;-)
That's because blinker fluid is hard to replace.
Never sick of the Mercedes content specially a G wagon
I’ve been waiting for you to buy a hooptie G Wagon. I definitely am excited to see this series
Another great video! Keep of the great work Tyler!
Hmm, collapsed engine mount...tell Wizard to check the transmission mount and I bet the flax discs show some wear too :)
Luckily, all you need to do is grow your own. Plant some flax seeds, and one month later... Instant replacement parts.
The M113 in the G came slightly tilted So it would fit
@@mrtyreus0 Hey man it's not that simple. Think of the cultivation, the milling, the forging, the milling again. You probably think flax discs grow on trees or something.

ACTUALLY the G-Wagon is made by Magna-Steyr for Daimler Benz AG in Austria… so… not made in Germany
I was hoping to find this, most older G-wagons in austria for that reason are branded with Puch on the rear, arent they
Steyr makes a bunch of nice shit
@chris younts now, this is where it becomes complicated… the engine is actually made in Affalterbach, Germany.
@@Communistdogg Yeah, for some reason it was sold as Puch in Austria, Switzerland, Yugoslavia and many other communist states. I live in Croatia and we had a lot of them in military use. Since my father works in Croatian army he sometimes used to pick me up from school in Puch G and Puch Pinzgauer among some other interesting vehicles.
Actually it’s spelt G-Wagen, with an E, not an O.
Please keep the look of this G as stock as possible. Then concentrate the mods on the running gear and engine

$22k for a vehicle with 200k+ on the clock
I need a sit down
That's barely run in for a g wagon
That's 300,000 kms, they're asking $14K for pickups with that on the clock up here. But 22K USD is about $26K cdn (for comparison)
if that was a diesel engine it would be barely broken in.
Diesel truck guys are laughing
Those Mercedes if well maintained could get to 500.000/600.000Km easily. (not sure about the g55 amg, but some Mercedes of that era can)
Let me introduce you to the Lc 80 series
Just a couple of things, Hoovie:The G-Wagen is built in Austria(Germany-adjacent😉). And it also technically had a 40 year lifespan(1979-2019), being built first for the Shah of Iran, and then used throughout the world for military and civilian purposes. And yes...they hold value insanely so!
the engine always leans in the G. I can vouch for that engine, I idled my s55 for a good 40 seconds with no oil on accident still running strong
At :45 when he placed his foot on the bumper; I was expecting the bumper to fall off.

G55s are better. The supercharged (2005+) engine has a much more fun power delivery vs the turbocharged engine.

The W463 is a bit of a parts bin special. It’s really interesting to see a post 2000 model, and how they’ve just glued in new interior trim items into the same old interior. It’s quite interesting that a 90s version has similar switchgear to the 300SE you have.

You would if Omaze sponsored his video lol
7:41 that is the way the engine sits on W463s of this vintage. The M113k is one of the best motors ever made period!
despite those side pipes, the G-wagon is incredible off-road, with a slight lift and appropriate tires.
I love the way this vehicle looks. I hope when Tyler sells it he gives a chance to purchase it. I doubt I would be able to afford it though. I would never buy a Mercedes even if I could afford it but this one really looks special.

I'd love to have a G55, the powertrain in that thing is rock solid.
They are actually made in Graz, Austria and developed together with Steyr-Puch. The military version is called Wolf and in some countries it’s sold under the Puch name. The French built it under license as a Peugeot P4.
I want the cheap military version. I'm betting it would be the most reliable version
I am sure you heard of that company in Colorado that imports them. Diesel engines and none of feature comforts. I too have been tempted with one of those
They used to have naturally aspirated Diesels lol. Talking about slow haha
I want this but with a blown engine, and smack a 4bt or 12v in it. With a manual transfer case and transmission. I want the cheap military version of the unimog.

No. That is garbage when people do the facelifts on the older cars. This front is already looking retro cool. The huge ductwork and intakes on the facelift already look dated.
Absolutely fucking not.
Facelifted G-Class are tacky af.
The only thing I would suggest (if you really want to mod for whatever reason) is to bling it up in the way how it used to be done to these back then (mid 2000s style, they used to throw lots of chrome on this era of the G).
I believe adding 2019 G parts on a 2000s G is simply for show offs at this point and ruins the appeal of older models.

As a W116 S Classe and C107 Addict I smiled to myself when you mentioned the G Wagen mileage at 222'000 Miles (Shy of 360'000 km).
Nicely broken in mileage especially for the Handbuilt AMG I murmured through my smile, Yes Mercedes Benz are not what they once were regarding over engineered mobile pill boxes but the underlying engineering is still there and especially in the G Wagen.
