How Much does it Cost to run Our Small Farm?

  • We're on 1 acre and we've got an entire farm here.
Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

well there is also the YT income and such, but then again it doesn't really matter since that varies from channel to channel but for some it is not an unsubstantial amount... basic prices on everything to give an idea of what it gives isn't bad at all

is it the thought of you killing and processing the animal that bugs you, I've done it my entire life. and it never gets easier, but once it's in the freezer you don't really think about it anymore, but I prefer to bring it to a butcher and let them do it, mainly because of time. it's so much easier to pay someone else do to it than me since it takes a good part of the day to process a carcass rather than a butcher that's better and gets it done in a couple hours.

It’s certainly easier to grow where we have a lot of water and I felt really thankful for that when you talked about being in Arizona! Now knowing about what your costs are, I would be interested in knowing what you spend on groceries for those things you can't or don't produce, and roughly what you didn't have to spend as a result of what you have produced. I am quite interested in starting up a homestead, but financial information isn't fully covered. I am trying to accertain the value proposition of all these things.

Part of that will depend on how much you can/want to adapt your diet to what you grow/raise. And also a lot of food for you can also feed your animals. How much depends on space and what animals you raise (need some for fertility of your soil + eating what for you would be waste). Research what can serve double/triple/4x duty, find stuff you can store as is (root cellar) because storing via canning/drying/freezing/etc. costs money/time/store bought means at least twice. And don't forget things like winning seeds for next planting/perennials, the less you need to keep buying, the less you need to worry about earning money.

if it's just a hobby farm or full on homestead, are you buying already developed or starting ground up. your start up costs are going to be huge, from fencing, shelters, feed medical issues, watering systems, predator control, and countless hours of labor. we started a larger hobby operation on pre existing structures, and I have thousands into it with hundreds in return. basically no profit, but it does feel good and tastes better at supper time, and gives the kids responsibility and an education and experience very few ppl get.

Hi Danelle, i live down the road from you in Tucson. I don't have property like yours, and have had to grow everything in containers. It's hard to grow things here because of the intense heat. But i found a book written by George Brookbank, the U of A extension agent. He suggested that we have a perception problem, not a heat problem. We look at Arizona as having a long growing season when we actually have two short seasons, due to the intense heat in July-August which kills pollen. Tomatoes and other plants won't set fruit in those months as the pollen is dead. We might have fruit ripening, but that was pollinated before the bad heat. You might notice that as the heat lessens these plants perk up again. But they won't do as well as they did at the start of the season, so pull them. He recommended we buy seeds from northern growers who have very short growing seasons, such as Johnny's (based in Vermont). Think of how short their growing season is, or Alaska's. They require plants to grow fast and ripen early with great flavor. That's also what wr need. Buy the varieties with shorter growing seasons, start seeds early in February so they can be planted as soon as last frost is over. Also start more tomato seeds in late May so they can be planted and ready to produce pollen as soon as daily temps are down to 90. These tomatoes will produce through the first frost and with some protection you might have home grown tomatoes on your Christmas table. Any green ones can be wrapped in newspaper and put in a dark closet to ripen...and they will. I'm sure you've probably figured this out by now, but maybe other folks in Arizona are still trying to trick their plants to producing. It won't work. Pollen dies after 90 degrees. You know how long our stretch of 100+ days are! I love your channel, your family and goats ate so much fun. Thank you so much. My growing days are over as I'm now disabled, so I'm getting my planting and growing fix from you and other UTubers!

Here in Australia where it’s seriously hot up north and the soils have been devastated by gov influences and gum trees, many farmers are using BioDynamic principles from Rudolf Steiner coupled with Permaculture principles. Their costs have dropped to the point of no cost as these principles create water in the soil, they self feed and self fertilise.

My numbers are so much different, $2/lb for pork, $3.6/lb for beef, $4/lb for lamb/goat. Chicken eggs are $2.5/dozen. I calculated animal costs, feed, transportation and butcher costs. We butchered our own chickens so our chicken was just $1/lb. The goat milk is too complicated to calculate the cost of, but the cheese whey gives us free chicken food. Thanks for sharing.

People in Africa farm all the time. Grass fed. See my visit to South Africa to see my Mom. Also, corn feed for chickens is okay. Chickens can eat corn though not as digestible. That is all they feed chickens in South Africa and have been doing so for generations.

I wonder: if you can, look up permaculture forest garden. Was just thinking az might allow you to do something like that. because it doesn't look like a garden really at all. It looks more like a forest it's all covered in mulch you start with all the fruit trees. And then from there depending on where you're at and what works in your area. I've seen many different ones. There's actually one down in Arizona that is pretty good and established.

Have you considered a fodder system for your chickens? This may be helpful, though it may be a bit tricky in your climate. I get great results in Florida except for during the hot summer months. I am not sure if your chickens lay year round, but it is a wise decision to switch to a fodder system during the winter when they’re laying less often and therefore you are not making money off of them. All the best!

Why don't you invest in some garden towers that have a compost center tube, earth worms, drain the excess water into a bucket below for repeat use of wonderful self-fertilized water and up to 50 "pockets" for plants?!! The soil is kept so rich and loose weeding is easy. Once you start doing that you'll kick yourselves for not doing it starting long ago!

pretty hard to do all this stuff at once here , but I appreciate the advises , im a 18 year old boy who just happened to like this stuff , my first start with goats was with what I'd say rescuing 4 goats , a big mother ( that doesn't give milk ) , a very small doe ( I think she didn't get enough milk when growing so she got considerably small ) , a year old doe , and a six month old doe , these last two are promising , so they probably will be our beginning , I'd like to know when do I have to breed them ( they've never been bred before ) thnx

You may have to supplement the milk for the babies and small ones. Buy a good book on lambs to make sure that you are taking care of them properly. Good luck.

Home farms are a labor of love, if you do it for saving money I don't think it does since labor to take care of all of it isn't factored in either. It takes me one hour of my labor to pay for all the eggs, milk and veggies I could eat in a month and I can buy it at a local farm here. So, I would say if that is what you love to do go for it, for someone like myself I prefer the freedom of travel and not having to worry about plants, animals (except for my pets, 2 betas, 2 cats, 1 dog) to think about, although I would love to have a goat or two as pets as well. Enjoy your farm, it's a great way to live!!

5:07 I raise meat rabbits and it isn't as cheap as u would expect. You have to pay for their cage, their feeders, their feed, and hay. We have spent close to $1000 on my rabbits in just a year. But that is also including all of the rabbits I have bought and I buy show quality stock, because I also show.

Hey Im from India , Last year we bought a little farm in a very famous mountain resort area called Mussoorie & we call our farm The Brigadiers Cottage. We did up the old house to give us 3 bedrooms , a huge lounge , Kitchen & the staff quarters. ( in India we cannot do without the servants ) We then converted this into a homestay or rather a farm stay , kind off like a boutique B & B. The income has certainly taken us by surprise.. you may want to try that too... now we are expanding to 9 rooms... the dogs .. 2 tibetan mastiffs and a rescued St. Bernard besides the chicken have arrived. Now we intend to focus on the farm ... 2 small breed mountain cows and about 5 goats are on the way soon... the vegetables have started to come in and though we dont stay there .. we are really enjoying it.. we even have barking deer in the vicinity.. my husbands about to move here full time and we are very excited.
I just want you to know that your vids are truly inspirational.. do visit us if you are ever in India . www.brigadierscottage.in

    • @hijabimama2552
      @hijabimama2552 5 років тому

@Bri I agree, they started with "staff quarters" which sounded just fine,, then quickly switched to servants which sounds a bit degrading. Anyone would be proud to say they were a chef, a ranch hand etc, nobody wants to say "I'm a servant". It's so antiquated.

@Ursule Larochelle looks like the comment I replied to is gone. But I know that things get lost in translation or they simply mean different things to different people. I have had a few men, mainly from India as far as I can tell, refer to me as madam and it just makes me cringe. I understand they're trying to be respectful so I never say anything. But where I live ma'am is a respectful way to address a woman, and a "madam" is a woman who sells other women to men. So I really don't like it. All we can do is our best and try to understand eachother.

Zoxtens28 JoGGie it’s a mistranslation. i have family in rural india and what they refer to as “servants” are practically extended family. my family’s housekeeper in india basically raised me :) We call her LukhiMai. and it doesn’t mean we’re rich, it is very common for lower class to help middle class in india. they are respected and trusted. it is uncommon in America so there tends to be confusion

Great video. I'm a new goat owner and the feed has been one of my biggest concerns. We have 15 acres of forage and just found a local farmer to buy hay rounds from. Looks like I'll need to put all the pellets away.. we have the beet, alfalfa and sweet all stock feed. We have been giving the goats three cup of this mix each every night, after forage and hay all day. BTW the goats are mini nubians. So not very big.
