Agree on a lot of your choices Carcass- surgical steel Agnostic Front- One Voice Faith no more- sol invictus Atheist- Jupiter Voivod- target earth (i know, but for me this absolutely felt like a Comeback... the jasonic era fading out into infini... who would have thought that Voivod would Come back so strong just listening to synchro anarchy) Exodus- Tempo of the damned Testament- Formation of damnation Asphyx- Death the brutal way Celtic Frost- Monotheist Sheer terror- standing up for falling down Would be my choices... i guess🤔
Necrotic Nick- l like that one but I always had an issue with the change to more harsh vocals on it. Russ was such a killer singer and I really missed the giant vocals on that album.
Cynic - Traced in Air, definitely. Focus is such a masterpiece in progressive music. It’s actually kind of insane that they were able to match it with their first new music in 15 years.
Necrotic Nick- Traced in Air still floors me to this day and as much as I love Focus I think Traced is even better. It's like a perfect storm of hooks, technical playing and solid songwriting across the board.
Hell yeah, Possessed. Back in 1985, I bought Seven Churches on cassette. It’s one of my faves of all time. I got to see Possessed 2010. Great concert with Marduk, Withered. 🤘🎸😈
Man Surgical Steel is still in my regular rotation. Everything I love about one of my favorite bands of all time, just badass riffs and incredible melodies for days. Hope you guys had a blast at MDF! Looking forward to seeing whats in store next. Cheers!
Good call on Surgical! It’s my favorite Carcass album. I would say the self titled Flotsam was a good comeback from the meh stuff they’d had for awhile. And while it’s not amazing or mind blowing, Obituary “Frozen in Time” resurrected the band and had solid songs!
Necrotic Nick- Surgical Steel is such a badass return for Carcass. I don't own the self titled from Flotsam & Jetsam but I'll be on the look out for that one and I considered Frozen in Time but I thought the self titled one from Obituary really got people excited about Obituary again. I can't wait for them to cut a new one.
Here's an album that came immediately to mind for this topic: King Animal by Soundgarden. They had broken up in the late '90s and then came back and put out King Animal in 2012. It's a great album and leans more into the alternative metal side of the band as opposed to the grunge/alternative rock side as well.
Necrotic Nick- I liked King Animal but I already had Black Gives Way to Blue on here and honestly that one had more of an impact on me. Soundgarden will always have a special place in my heart. Superunknown was the first album I ever bought on CD and it's still a favorite of mine.
Celtic Frost - Monotheists (My favorite comeback album ever) Watchtower - Concept of Math: Book One (yeah I know it a Ep) Fates Warning - Sympathetic Resonance (Yeah its Arch/Matheos but its a 100% glorious Fates Warning come back album) Candlemass - Self Titled Anthrax - Worship Music Possessed - Revelations of Oblivion
All really solid picks, Nick. You're a man of taste. I LOVE Traced in Air, glad you brought it up. The comeback albums that immediately come to mind are Surgical Steel, Monotheist (I couldn't believe how good that record was when it came out, and I still can't) and Brave New World. On its own, I don't think BNW is THAT great (it's pretty good!) but it had a symbolic weight that few albums in metal history had. It meant so much to so many as metal was exiting the 90s, and that Rock in Rio show had Maiden display its majesty in full power to an entire new generation of fans (which they managed to keep in the ensuing twenty years). Nick, what's your take on Kindly Bent to Free Us? It never really clicked with me.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I almost had Monotheist and Brave New World on here but I had some others I wanted to throw out instead. Brave New World's significance with Bruce returning and killing it again definitely ushered a giant love for the band again and that Rock in Rio performance is flat out legendary. Kindly Bent to Free us really never grabbed me to be honest. There's a few songs but it really just felt too light an airing to me. It was more like progressive alternative rock if that makes sense.
I'll be listening to a few of these choices. Some bands I never heard of and a few that I never listened to carefully enough. Your reviews of Nervosa and Crypta some time ago were great and I ended up purchasing those, so thanks.
Necrotic Nick- I thought about that one but I think both Thrashmaniac and MetalBen covered them so I left that one off. I agree that it's a pretty killer comeback from the weird turn they took especially on Endorama.
Necrotic Nick- Can't argue with Chuck much there but stylistically I've always seen Possessed as the more of a thrash band that pioneered death metal. Either way, they're an amazing band I'm was stoked to talk about how killer Revelations of Oblivion still is.
Necrotic Nick- Jeff poured every ounce of his being into that album and you can hear it. Lots of vented rage on that one and honestly it's probably why I connect with it a bit more than the other albums. They're all great but this comeback is legendary.
Man I feel the same way as you about ALICE IN CHAINS and FAITH NO MORE. Those were two incredible come back albums from them. And Angel Dust is my all time favorite FNM album as well. I sure hope FNM release another album soon. Great idea for a video.🤘🍺
First album that comes to my mind is formation of damnation by Testament, after a near 10 years out and then to come back with Alex back on guitars and such huge songs has to be up there
Necrotic Nick- That one I thought about throwing on there and while it's a killer comeback album I also see The Gathering as a killer comeback album as well. That's kinda the problem with having two killer comebacks. lol
Necrotic Nick- I liked it but the chorus didn't do much for me honestly. I am, for the first time in years, curious about a new In Flames album though.
Some great picks here Nick, personally I'd include Candlemass self titled from 2005...It was so great to have Messiah back at the helm, but unfortunately the reunion with him was short lived...Its an awesome album tho.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! That one was close to making it but getting this list down to 10 was a pain in the ass lol. I love that album though. Black Dwarf had me sold on the album from the second I heard it. It sucks it was such a short lived reunion with Messiah but I like where they're at now so I can't complain much.
Man, I need a job where all I have to do is talk about and discuss metal! lol, so sad I won't be able to catch this live in the chat, yeah, this is def a solid list of comebacks. In 2013-2014 I remember being on cloud 9 all year knowing I would be getting a reformed CARCASS & AT THE GATES. All my co-workers at the time could tell I was fucking pumped about those reunion albums & upcoming live tours!
Necrotic Nick- It's not a glamorous job/ obsession but it is fun lol. Yeah, I remember being stoked as fuck that both Carcass and At the Gates were returning with new albums and man did those albums live up to the hype for me. Getting to see them live when I thought I never would was even better.
in all honesty, Rainer Fog by AIC is one of my favorite albums from the grunge 4, and the William Duvall era of the band is one of the most underrated runs of any 90s band in general regardless of genres
Necrotic Nick- I really dig that one too. Honestly, Alice in Chains doesn't have a bad album in my opinion. The Song Red Giant on Rainer Fog is one of my newer favorites by them. Basically, you can't go wrong with Alice in Chains at all.
My record store has a vinyl copy of Traced in Air. I’m gonna go buy it tomorrow. Your review sold me 😂 was kind of on the fence cuz it’s a used copy for $60 but i think I’ll be able to sell a few things I don’t need and get some credit
@@thrallsofmetal I have Focus on CD. I really enjoyed that. I went down to the record store yesterday sold some old band shirts and merch and ended up getting “Traced” for free as a result. Well worth it. Nice clear vinyl gatefold sleeve. You’re right, amazing album. Reminded me of like a modern Pink Floyd with the hard rock of Rush. Listened to it again this morning too 😅
Revelations to Oblivion is so good. Still listen to it regularly. Carcass- Surgical Steel, Immortal- Northern Chaos Gods and Celtic Frost- Monotheist all for great comeback albums. For bands returning to form Megadeth- Dystopia, Kreator- Phantom Antichrist, Judas Priest- Firepower
@@AgentBeans True, they can be great so I'm waiting to see how the new album is. Kiko and Dirk are good musicians, apparently Steve DiGiorgio recorded bass for the new album as well so there could be more thrash and technicality.
Necrotic Nick- Most of these albums I still jam regularly. I was just blasting Possessed in the car not too long ago and trying not to go 90 on the expressway lol. I thought about Megadeth but they have a lot that could be considered a comeback album. Same with Judas Priest and Kreator.
Violent Revolution was the true Kreator comeback album, after the dissapointing (to say the least) Renewal, Cause For Conflict, Outkast and Endorama...
@@FirebirdCamaro1220 Violent Revolution, Enemy of God and Hordes of Chaos are all good albums but I could be holding Phantom Antichrist to a higher level because I saw them for the first time on that tour. I got into the band around that time and to hear an album that good and see 5 of the songs live soon afterwards was great. Looking forward to the new album!
You had some really good and great picks here. Let's see, here are a few of my own that I thought were really solid comeback albums: 1. Iron Maiden- Brave New World 2. Judas Priest- Angel of Retribution 3. Kreator- Violent Revolution 4. Slipknot- The Gray Chapter 5. Living Sacrifice- The Infinite Order 6. Immortal- Northern Chaos Gods
Forgot to mention that I wish Nervosa's Perpetual Chaos would have made the cut considering Prika basically had to rebuild the whole band from scratch during the pandemic. It's actually a pretty inspiring story on their UA-cam channel. I haven't stopped listening to that once almost daily since I FINALLY saw them here in the U.S. with Destruction who unfortunately couldn't finish their set because of a storm that fried their amps. They only had a few songs left though.
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, I think that would qualify and I feel like that is one of their strongest albums. Prika really stepped up on that one. I missed them on that tour unfortunately. It was pretty close to MDF so I was in money saving mode.
Necrotic Nick- This was a fun one to do but it was a pain getting down to 10. Possessed was going to be on there no matter what. It's one of my favorite comeback stories in metal ever.
Necrotic Nick- I couldn't decide between that one or The Gathering because both could be considered a comeback album so I just left them off. They're both amazing albums and I kinda like The Gathering a bit more than Formation of Damnation.
@@thrallsofmetal I love the Gathering more than the Formation as well, but it didn't have Alex. I actually like the lineup from the Gathering better, but as a Testament comeback album, I would have gone with the one where Alex returns, given the importance of his playing and the chemistry he has with Peterson. That said, no disrespect to James Murphy. He's an absolute stud too. But he's not testament.
Necrotic Nick- The guy that started the thread brought up that one so I didn't want too many repeats in mine. I do love that album and it is an amazing comeback album.
Here's an idea: Favourite SwanSong Metal Albums, Albums from bands before Breaking-up, Classic Line-up ending, before hiatus etc. This could be changed to however it will work. Also 5 favourite albums with artwork from an artist. Got the Idea from the Hipgnosis Album Cover Thread where I believe you Pull out albums with a Hipgnosis art.
Necrotic Nick- That would be both tough and fun when it comes down to the swansong albums. I might actually give that one a go at some point. I wouldn't mind doing something based on album art in general since I'm such a huge fan of album art in general.
Benediction had an incredible comeback album. They were pretty much underground at least in the states back in the 1990s. They always seemed like the only band that really played the same type of Death Metal as Boltthrower. Back to the caveman circle pit , no time left to play pin the tail on the Honky.
Necrotic Nick- That one was close to making the list but I only had 10 spots and I wanted to talk about some albums that I hadn't really touched much on before. I do love that last Benediction. It's honestly the best thing they've dropped since Transcend the Rubicon which is a killer albums still.
Killer picks as always man! Especially great call on Exodus and That Alice In Chains album kicks so much ass! For me if I could list 5…. 1. Megadeth - United Abominations 2. Iron Maiden - Brave new world 3. Satan - Life Sentence 4. Black Sabbath - Eternal Idol 5. Angel Witch - As above so below
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I didn't think of Satan or Angel Witch unfortunately and since the other videos I saw included Iron Maiden already I left that one off. Megadeth is tough since they have multiple comeback albums but the one I probably would have went with might be The System Has Failed since it follow to really weak albums.
Necrotic Nick- Not sure but they posted a picture of them with test pressing of the new album on their Instagram not too long ago so I'm guessing they going to announce something at some point.
Fun Idea. Here's mine, plus Honourable mentions: Revelation - Release (Debut line-up reunion, also new album in over a decade) Venom - Cast in Stone (Classic Line-up reunion) Metallica - Death Magnetic (Glorious comeback to thrash as a Full Line-up with Trujillo) Count Raven - Mammons War (New album long after Being active again) Judas Priest - Angel of Retribution (Rob Comes Back) Candlemass - The Door to Doom (Johan Returns, New album since Psalms for the dead which was stated to be the last studio album for the band Until now.) Ozzy Osbourne - Ozzmosis (New album after Ozzy's first Retirement) Black Sabbath - Born Again (Lost Half the line-up and was Uncertain before Ian Gillan joined and Bill Ward returned. Though debatable, but Honestly, one could argue majority of the albums in the 80s could be Considered Comeback albums since it was Shaky history-wise for Sabbath. Plus the Name Speaks for itself.) Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers (Mk ll line-up reunion) Trouble - Simple Mind Condition (New Album Since Hiatus) Others include Count Raven’s Sixth Storm, Satan’s Life Sentence, Mayhem’s Daemon, Candlemass S/T, Monotheist, Rainbow's Stranger in Us All, Atheist's Jupiter, Dio's Strange Highways, Pagan Altar's Lords of Hypocrisy, Solstice's White Horse Hill, Warning's Watching From a Distance, Lord Belial's Rapture (which, have you guys gave that a listen yet? Just released few weeks ago.), And I'd put King Animal by Soundgarden, but I don't really consider that Metal, so Honourable mention.
Necrotic Nick- I tried to just keep it to 10 since I was going to gush about each one but there's definitely a ton of honorably mentions to be made as well.
Necrotic Nick- I mean they do get a bit more roughed up but I don't plan on parting with any of them. Monotheist was on my rough draft but since Thrashmaniac covered it I left it off in favor of some others.
I agree with almost every one of these, I said quite a few of them myself when I was going through it in my head after seeing the title. I'd somehow completely forgotten about Black Gives Way to Blue though, holy fuck you're right that album is incredible! Anyone who slept on AIC post Layne (RIP) needs to wake the fuck up because pretty much everything they've done since BGWTB has also been great. Yeah, what a comeback, thanks for reminding me of that Maybe my picks are obvious but I instantly thought of: Back In Black, simply because of how gigantic the loss of Bon Scott was only earlier that year Iron Maiden - Brave New World (they were hardly ever inactive but it's pretty well known how bad Virtual XI was. I do like the X Factor and don't really have an issue with Blaze as a vocalist, but needless to say having Bruce and Adrian come back was the absolute right thing to do and they ended up writing their best album since Seventh Son) Judas Priest - Angel of Retribution (welcome back Rob Halford! Although I do think that with Firepower they eclipsed pretty much everything they'd done since Painkiller) Black Sabbath - 13 (yeah a lot of people hate this but I think it's awesome. I remember being so pumped when God Is Dead first came out, my 14 year old self loved that, and I still do. The album carries a lot of nostalgia for me and will always have a special place in my heart) Anthrax - Worship Music, a killer reunion with Joey after coming off the back of the extremely patchy John Bush era! Machine Head - The Blackening (they needed to pull out all the stops to re-establish themselves and after warming up with Ashes of Empires, they showed they were still capable of writing masterpieces)
Necrotic Nick- Black Gives Way to Blue really struck an emotional chord with me when it dropped. It was a closure album packed full of killer songs and Duvall killed it on the vocal performance. I had Angel of Retribution and Worship Music on my list but getting it down to 10 was a bitch so I left them off. 13 seems to be a bit divisive with people on Black Sabbath but I do love that album and I always considered Through the Ashes of Empires to be the big comeback and then The Blackening to be solidifying they're return to the sound with an even better album. These are all great picks though and I love all of them. I left off Brave New World simply because I know a ton of people will put that one on there and I wanted some deeper cuts.
@@thrallsofmetal Saw Tool live 3 weeks ago and the Fear Inoculum songs really stood out. To me you have to hear it live to fully embrace it. Insane show.
I agree with Exodus, Carcass, and Possessed. I was gonna say Obituary - Frozen in Time. I loved that album. 100% the last Benediction album was a great comeback. I loved Death Angel-The Art of Dying. Discharge-End of Days, great comeback and best album since See Nothing, Hear Nothing, Say Nothing. Candlemass-Candlemass..the return off Messiah, say no more. Testament-Formation of Damnation. Iron Maiden- Brave New World. Satan-Life Sentence. Anthrax-Worship Music. Voivod -Target Earth. Should have stayed away goes to...that last Black Flag album. Did anyone even buy that?
Necrotic Nick- Man, I totally biffed on the last Benediction. That totally would have counted. I like Frozen in Time but I think the self titled is stronger and closer to their earlier sound than they have been in awhile. I love The Art of Dying but I think they've become so much better here lately that it's pretty overshadowed. Satan and Voivod would have worked too. There's a ton of killer stuff on this list, bro. If I could have done more than 10 I probably would have thrown more of these in.
I own 95% of the stuff on your list. As much as I Love Obituary self titled album I seem to be in the minority but I think "Inked in blood" is just as good, if not better... I like the production and Donald Tardy's drum sound on the album. Great List!!!
I had a ticket to see Possessed with Pestilence as well, but like you said, fucking Covid ruined it...AND they haven't tried to relaunch that tour since, which is actually quite sad. Come on guys get it together. If Nervosa and Destruction can get to North America, so can y'all.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, Shred and I were bummed as fuck. We were kinda hoping to get a chance to meet Jeff since he commented on our year end lists. I'm hoping Possessed can get back on the road but I know Jeff's been though surgeries, battled illness and a bunch of other stuff so I want him to come back at 100% if he gets back on the road. I'll have my tickets as soon as it's announced.
I've still to listen to 'Sol Invictus', it sounds lame but I was put off by the cover art (I know I'm old school) but I should probably give it another listen. The AIC albums with William DuVall are superb, he is a super talented guy. Was a part of the Hardcore band Neon Christ (their work was reissued by the mighty Southern Lord recently). That Sleep record is excellent, I gotta be honest that I'm hit and miss with High on Fire and Om but when those boys are together fireworks happen.
Necrotic Nick- Yeah, the album art doesn't do much for me concerning Sol Invictus but it really is a killer album overall. Black Gives Way to Blue was amazing and definitely delivered some closure for the Layne's death as well as paving the way for Alice in Chains to move forward. I'm actually curious about a hardcore project with Duvall in it. I really dug his work in Giraffe Tongue Orchestra too. I love that Sleep album but I'm also a huge Matt Pike fanboy in general so I love High on Fire.
Angel Dust is still one of the greatest LPs ever written. Currently replaying GTA San Andreas and loving Midlife Crisis popping up on Radio X. Also, Alice in Chains being metal?.. let's not forget they opened for Clash of the Titans.. and won the respect of Slayer and Anthrax!
Necrotic Nick- Agreed. It's one of my favorite 90's albums possibly of all time. Yeah, there always seems to be a debate as to whether Alice in Chains is a metal band. They have the cred and the respect of the metal community but honestly it doesn't matter. I love that band regardless of their status.
@@thrallsofmetal a good band is just a good band innit! I saw AiC with William Duvall on their first UK comeback show in Sonisphere Festival.. totally gobsmacked .. they were brilliant live and just an amazingly good band. Probably one of the highlights of the day for me.. Same year that Limp Bizkit played.. which is the worst band I've ever seen.
Celtic Frost-Monotheist (one of avant-garde metal's pioneers came back after 2 mixed to reviled albums). Stratovarius-Polaris (after the dumpster fire that was the 2005 S/T album and swapping 2 longtime members, a major return to form). Helloween-Master of The Rings (Sure Andi Deris isn't Michael Kiske, but his addition and focus corrected the band after their 2 polarizing albums). Deicide-The Stench of Redemption (losing the Hoffmans plus 2 of the last 3 albums were pretty mediocre, this was a freshly cleaned slate). Dokken-Erase The Slate (Replacing George with Rebb Beach steered the band back on track, shame the lineup fizzled after this). Testament-The Formation of Damnation (9 years after The Gathering along with Chuck Billy beating cancer this is Testament beginning on a tear they haven't stopped on yet). Gorgoroth-Quantos Possunt Ad Satanitatem Trahunt (After several years of Gaahl and King of Hell unsuccessfully stealing the band from mastermind Infernus, Pest and Tormentor returned for a phenomenal tour de focre). Accept-Blood of The Nations (15 years after their meh 90s run and replacing Udo with the grat Marc Tornillo the band has entered a great renaissance). Winger-IV (Over a decade later after breaking up, one of metal's underdogs prove they're still great and deserve more respect with phenomenal musicianship that shows they're more than their hair band hits). Overkill-Ironbound (over a decade of mixed results the stars aligned for this band where they've become bigger than ever before).
Horns Up on Surgical Steel...Saw that tour to support the album...I'm a Bill Steer fan...More Carcass, Less Beef...lol*thx Nick...Still Love my cheeseburgers 🍔 Sry Jeff Walker(: Metal & Being a Carnivore seem to go together ❤😀
Necrotic Nick- I saw them on their tour for Surgical Steel with The Black Dahlia Murder, Gorguts and Noisem and they killed it that night. Bill and Jeff are one of my favorite writing tandems in metal honestly. I respect the vegan stance but I love meat. lol
@@thrallsofmetal 100% agree, well said, I saw the same tour in the Midwest that year..Yes I love how Carcass write music..Metal 2 the Masses...Take care Nick. 🖤🖤🖤
Necrotic Nick- I thought about it but I left it off since it is a re-recording but honestly it's becoming one of my favorite thrash albums ever since I got it.
Tempo of the Damned by Exodus is a pretty good comeback album to me. Did that album have Steve Zetro Sousa on vocals? I'm not sure if he was on that album or not. Bonded by Blood by the same band had Paul Bostaph on vocals. In my opinion, Steve Zetro Sousa is the better singer for Exodus instead of Paul Bostaph. But that's just me.
Carcass - Surgical Steel for me, after we all figured Carcass was done for good. Edit: Unfit is my favourite Carcass song, period! Edit2: absolutely agree 110% with Alice in Chains and all you said. One of my favourite bands as well. AIC is metal. Edit3: ..... FNM got me in to hard rock/metal, and was my gateway band. I loooove them, and Angel Dust is a masterpiece. (We need to get together, drink and chat music lol)
Necrotic Nick- Man, I almost got a play by play as you watched the video here lol. Surgical Steel was such a huge album when it dropped and it's just packed with killer songs. With Alice in Chains I feel like I got some closure from Layne's death and a renewed spirit in the band at the same time and Faith No More is flat out one of my favorite all time bands. Mike Patton is a vocal god in my book. I do love chatting it up about music in general. I'm on Facebook and Instagram if you want to hit me up outside of the comments here.
Good pick on Alice in Chains and Faith No More comeback albums. Dirt and Angel Dust (both 1992 albums) are my favorites by those. Alice in Chains has never missed, while Faith No More hasn't missed since The Real Thing (not a fan of Chuck Mosley's vocals on We Care a Lot and Introduce Yourself). Exodus's Temple of the Damned is amazing. Probably my #2 only to Fabulous Disaster. I like most of the Exodus music besides Force of Habit and maybe Impact Is Imminent. I also like Celtic Frost's Monotheist (arguably one of the best final albums from a band). I guess Testament's The Formation of Damnation can be considered a comeback album and I think it rules (they had a long hiatus from The Gathering). Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell was great. Never Say Die! is an awful Black Sabbath album and firing Ozzy allowed them to recruit Dio and Dio kills it on Heaven and Hell, and I think he topped that with Mob Rules. Judas Priest had Angel of Retribution, and that's a great comeback album. Too bad that was short lived but they rebounded since the album following Angel of Retribution. For just regular hard rock, Deep Purple's Perfect Strangers is an awesome comeback album. Van Halen's A Different Kind of Truth is awesome, once you get past Tattoo which the only real turd on that album. The rest of it kicks ass. Great list you have, Necrotic.
I’m a tad biased, but Black Gives Way to Blue by Alice In Chains is probably one of the finest comeback albums ever. Jerry Cantrell is brilliant Edit: second one on the video. Fucking love it
Necrotic Nick- Regardless of whether people consider them a metal band or not I had to throw Alice in Chains on there. That album was so damn good and I love that they kept going after that.
I did a metal comeback video as well. Here’s my list: Judas Priest AOR Testament formation of damnation Candlemass self titled Iron Maiden brave new world Obituary frozen in time Slayer christ illusion Metallica death magnetic Accept blood of the nations Exodus tempo of the damned Black Sabbath heaven and hell
Necrotic Nick- Between them, Cannibal Corpse and Deicide they were my big gateway into death metal. I when headfirst into all that brutal shit courtesy of them. Cheers from Ohio, bro!
Immortal... Northern Chaos Gods...without Abbath...Demonaz former lead guitar player with the vocals this time...Like the beginning, very early days of the band. Solid release...Back to form!
Necrotic Nick- I thought about that one but I don't think many people doubted Immortal could write a banger without Abbath. Demonaz's solo album was killer so I was pretty confident and Immortal didn't leave off with a dud because All Shall Fall was killer too. Still, Northern Chaos Gods is a killer album.
@@thrallsofmetal I Like All Shall Fail too!! Definitely throw sum Black metal into the mix with your reviews .A lot of top quality metal to be found... A lot of old school death and thrash fans don't give Black metal its due credit...Same can be said for grindcore/powerviolence. Nails, Exhumed, Dying Fetus, Misery Index, Charles Bronson, Seige, etc. Thx 4 any new killer Black metal bands like Dissection, Emperor, Immortal, Samael. Peace/Metal,
For my pick for a comeback album is gonna be Halo of Blood (2013) by Children of Bodom. Cause I feel like the previous album before Halo of Blood (Relentless Reckless Forever) was definitely Children of Bodom least favorite album. Then when I listened to Halo of Blood it felt like they went back to their melodic death sound and unlike the previous ones that sounded groovy and thrash (which I'm not saying it's a bad thing, it's not what Children of Bodom is all about). Which I can definitely say that Halo of Blood is Children of Bodom's best album of the modern 2010 years.
Necrotic Nick- It's been awhile since I listened to Halo of Blood but I did like it better than the previous one. They really were kind of on cruise control for a bit after Hatecrew bumped up their popularity.
Necrotic Nick- Solid list. I would have had Angel of Retribution on there instead of Painkiller since that last Ripper album was terrible and you have the return of Halford. I haven't jammed Wormrot's new one so I couldn't include that one as well was Confessor, Cirith Ungol and Bathory. I prefer more of the early stuff from Bathory rather than the later era material. Amebix's Sonic Mass is a killer album though.
Obituary's comeback album was actually Frozen in Time, which was released in 2005, two years after reforming. It was their first album since that terrible album from 1997, Back from the Dead, which had led to their breakup the same year. Also, you missed Celtic Frost's Monotheist, which was a GREAT comeback album as well as the new Cave In album Heavy Pendulum, which was their first since 2011 and the first since the death of Caleb Scofield. Also, you missed Suffocation's comeback album Souls to Deny, which was their first full-length since Pierced from Within as well as Helloween's amazing self-titled album from last year, which was what we needed after that *DUMPSTER FIRE* that was the 2015 release My God-Given Right!
I actually was not a huge fan of Frozen in Time, really really didnt like that record. The band really didnt get back on track for me until Darkest Day personally. Did enjoy Monotheist a lot despite the musical direction change.
Necrotic Nick- Obituary has had a number of albums that can be called comeback albums. There's a fair a mount of peaks and valleys in that discography. Also, this was just 10 of my personal favorites in terms of comeback albums, Robert. There are tons I could have brought up... and you missed GWAR's "Violence Has Arrived, Judas Priest's "Angel of Retribution", Kreator's "Violent Revolution", Autopsy's "Macabre Eternal" and Black Sabbath's "Heaven and Hell". Can't list them all though.
I think Testament- The Formation of Damnation is a killer comeback album. As good as there classic albums. Anthrax- Worship Music: I was not expecting much since I did not like much after Sound of White Noise but Worship Music is a real good album. Mr. Bungle- Rath of the Easter Bunny. I know it is a rerecording of an old demo with some new songs and covers, but it has been such a long gap between albums. Imo, it's there second best album after the self titled.
Necrotic Nick- I thought about including that one but I was torn because The Gathering would also count as a comeback album since they were kinda getting back to their more straight up thrash sound with that one. Anthrax's Worship Music was in the running for my list as well. I thought about Mr. Bungle but since it was a re-recording of earlier material I left it off. It's a fucking amazing album though.
Opeth must have been influenced by Cynic , maybe even Hypocrisy. I can't think of anything else prior to Cynic that combined Death Metal with Pink Floyd style music and Vocals
Necrotic Nick- I had Angel of Retribution on my rough draft list since it was the return of Halford and it followed Demolition which was a turd as well.
Agree on a lot of your choices
Carcass- surgical steel
Agnostic Front- One Voice
Faith no more- sol invictus
Atheist- Jupiter
Voivod- target earth (i know, but for me this absolutely felt like a Comeback... the jasonic era fading out into infini... who would have thought that Voivod would Come back so strong just listening to synchro anarchy)
Exodus- Tempo of the damned
Testament- Formation of damnation
Asphyx- Death the brutal way
Celtic Frost- Monotheist
Sheer terror- standing up for falling down
Would be my choices... i guess🤔
Possessed and Jeff’s story should be someone’s book project. Easily one of the most amazing comebacks in all of music. He is an inspiring dude.
Amen!
Necrotic Nick- I want a full biopic film with a killer soundtrack to follow the book. The whole 9 yards!
It's a shame that Larry has disowned his time in Possessed, because us true fans won't forget
I heard he also started walking again recently too
Really like the Forbidden comeback album - Omega Wave.
@@thrallsofmetal And Brutality!
Hell yeah, Possessed. Back in 1985, I bought Seven Churches on cassette. It’s one of my faves of all time. I got to see Possessed 2010. Great concert with Marduk, Withered. 🤘🎸😈
Necrotic Nick- I still need to see them live but hopefully one day I will.
Surgical Steel after 17 years hit like a truck. Number 1
LOVE that album🤘
Necrotic Nick- Literally every track rips on that album.
@@thrallsofmetal self titled obituary is great. I really like inked in blood as well. And excellent call on the Alice In Chains!
Celtic Frost - Monotheists (My favorite comeback album ever)
Watchtower - Concept of Math: Book One (yeah I know it a Ep)
Fates Warning - Sympathetic Resonance (Yeah its Arch/Matheos but its a 100% glorious Fates Warning come back album)
Candlemass - Self Titled
Anthrax - Worship Music
Possessed - Revelations of Oblivion
Necrotic Nick- Solid list. I came close to having that Candlemass on here but this was tough to narrow down.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I love hearing that people are going out and getting the albums through our reviews. That always makes me feel good.
Kreator - Violent Revolution (after all the weird shit they did in the 90s, they picked up right where they left after Coma of Souls)
Necrotic Nick- I thought about that one but I think both Thrashmaniac and MetalBen covered them so I left that one off. I agree that it's a pretty killer comeback from the weird turn they took especially on Endorama.
Chuck Schuldiner himself said Possessed were the first death metal band. That ends the debate, as far as I’m concerned.
Necrotic Nick- Can't argue with Chuck much there but stylistically I've always seen Possessed as the more of a thrash band that pioneered death metal. Either way, they're an amazing band I'm was stoked to talk about how killer Revelations of Oblivion still is.
If you ask me, it’s them and Celtic Frost.
Full on hands down agree on that Possessed album. Like time and circumstances hadn't any influence on their sound 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Cattle Decapitation is in studio now! New album 2023
Necrotic Nick- I can't wait to hear it!
That's kinda the problem with having two killer comebacks. lol
For me Possessed din't change at all! That comeback album is killer!!
Necrotic Nick- If they did, I think they only came back better and more furious than ever with Revelations of Oblivion.
I remember being blown away by Revelations of Oblivion.
Necrotic Nick- I still get goosebumps listening to that album.
Excellent episode as always. Always wondered about The Haunted. This is pretty cool topic, I couldn’t make a video. Blank Man! Nothing there….
Necrotic Nick- The Haunted's discography is pretty solid overall. There's one big turd in it in my opinion but outside of that it's pretty damn good.
Thoughts on the new In Flames song? I think they might do a comeback if the quality of the songs on the album are as good as this new single.
Necrotic Nick- I liked it but the chorus didn't do much for me honestly. I am, for the first time in years, curious about a new In Flames album though.
Monotheist/Celtic Frost....excellent comeback album..Kicks major arse!
Necrotic Nick- It was on the rough draft but I had on 10 spots unfortunately.
I honestly started watching this channel after Coverkillernation "retired", subscribed after their review of the new Solstice album last year
in all honesty, Rainer Fog by AIC is one of my favorite albums from the grunge 4, and the William Duvall era of the band is one of the most underrated runs of any 90s band in general regardless of genres
Necrotic Nick- Awesome, man! That album is so damn good and if you're a giant prog metal fan I'd call it an essential listen.
@@AgentBeans Super Collider while as an album sucked ass, it did have a couple good tracks
Sanctuary’s album The Year the Sun Died is a unbelievable come back!!!
Necrotic Nick- That was another one I considered but MetalBen had already brought that one up so I left it off. I do dig that album though.
You had some really good and great picks here. Let's see, here are a few of my own that I thought were really solid comeback albums:
1. Iron Maiden- Brave New World
2. Judas Priest- Angel of Retribution
3. Kreator- Violent Revolution
4. Slipknot- The Gray Chapter
5. Living Sacrifice- The Infinite Order
6. Immortal- Northern Chaos Gods
Necrotic Nick- There's definitely some big one I almost had on my list. I haven't jammed that Living Sacrifice to be honest.
How do you feel about the Exumer comeback albums?
Necrotic Nick- I think they've all been killer actually. They've always been underrated as hell in my opinion.
@@thrallsofmetal 2012 and 2016 are two of my favorite thrash albums, and they are so far in their career but still killing.
Love all those album. I feel the exact same way about Possessed.
Necrotic Nick- This was a fun one to do but it was a pain getting down to 10. Possessed was going to be on there no matter what. It's one of my favorite comeback stories in metal ever.
All great picks. Abramelin's Not Enough Snuff is a great comeback too.
Wow. I fully expected you to put up Formation from Testament, knowing how big of a fan you are or that band.
Nick you forgot Celtic Frost - Monotheist right or is it just not one of your 10 favorites ?
Ya Carcass, The Haunted and At The Gates!!!
No Monotheist? That's the GOAT for me.
Necrotic Nick- It almost made the list but getting down to 10 was pretty rough.
but what about the droid attack on the cookies?
Necrotic Nick- Sadly, there were no survivors.
Kreator - Violent Revolution =)
Necrotic Nick- That was definitely in consideration. It's a damn good return to form for them.
1. Megadeth - United Abominations
2. Iron Maiden - Brave new world
3. Satan - Life Sentence
4. Black Sabbath - Eternal Idol
Obituary album ranking?
Necrotic Nick- We're going to wait for the new one to drop so we can review that one before we throw them on the list.
Nice. When is it suppose to come out?
Necrotic Nick- Not sure but they posted a picture of them with test pressing of the new album on their Instagram not too long ago so I'm guessing they going to announce something at some point.
Fun Idea. Here's mine, plus Honourable mentions:
Revelation - Release (Debut line-up reunion, also new album in over a decade)
Venom - Cast in Stone (Classic Line-up reunion)
Metallica - Death Magnetic (Glorious comeback to thrash as a Full Line-up with Trujillo)
Count Raven - Mammons War (New album long after Being active again)
Judas Priest - Angel of Retribution (Rob Comes Back)
Candlemass - The Door to Doom (Johan Returns, New album since Psalms for the dead which was stated to be the last studio album for the band Until now.)
Ozzy Osbourne - Ozzmosis (New album after Ozzy's first Retirement)
Black Sabbath - Born Again (Lost Half the line-up and was Uncertain before Ian Gillan joined and Bill Ward returned. Though debatable, but Honestly, one could argue majority of the albums in the 80s could be Considered Comeback albums since it was Shaky history-wise for Sabbath. Plus the Name Speaks for itself.)
Deep Purple - Perfect Strangers (Mk ll line-up reunion)
Trouble - Simple Mind Condition (New Album Since Hiatus)
Others include Count Raven’s Sixth Storm, Satan’s Life Sentence, Mayhem’s Daemon, Candlemass S/T, Monotheist, Rainbow's Stranger in Us All, Atheist's Jupiter, Dio's Strange Highways, Pagan Altar's Lords of Hypocrisy, Solstice's White Horse Hill, Warning's Watching From a Distance, Lord Belial's Rapture (which, have you guys gave that a listen yet? Just released few weeks ago.), And I'd put King Animal by Soundgarden, but I don't really consider that Metal, so Honourable mention.
Necrotic Nick- I tried to just keep it to 10 since I was going to gush about each one but there's definitely a ton of honorably mentions to be made as well.
Possessed...Jeff Becerra...true Metal warrior!! Luv the dark riffs..🖤👿
Necrotic Nick- Jeff rules. He's a solid dude through and through too.
Obituary albums ranked??
Necrotic Nick- They've got to release that new album before we throw them on the list.
I"m glad you don't store your digipaks in those plastic sleeves. My favorite comeback album is probably Celtic Frost "Monotheist".
Necrotic Nick- I mean they do get a bit more roughed up but I don't plan on parting with any of them. Monotheist was on my rough draft but since Thrashmaniac covered it I left it off in favor of some others.
I think Per Jensen was the drummer's name from The Haunted. Per Ohlin Was Dead from Mayhem
Yeah, what a comeback, thanks for reminding me of that
Maybe my picks are obvious but I instantly thought of:
Back In Black, simply because of how gigantic the loss of Bon Scott was only earlier that year
Iron Maiden - Brave New World (they were hardly ever inactive but it's pretty well known how bad Virtual XI was. I do like the X Factor and don't really have an issue with Blaze as a vocalist, but needless to say having Bruce and Adrian come back was the absolute right thing to do and they ended up writing their best album since Seventh Son)
Judas Priest - Angel of Retribution (welcome back Rob Halford! Although I do think that with Firepower they eclipsed pretty much everything they'd done since Painkiller)
Black Sabbath - 13 (yeah a lot of people hate this but I think it's awesome. I remember being so pumped when God Is Dead first came out, my 14 year old self loved that, and I still do. The album carries a lot of nostalgia for me and will always have a special place in my heart)
Anthrax - Worship Music, a killer reunion with Joey after coming off the back of the extremely patchy John Bush era!
Iron Maiden - Brave New World
Black Sabbath - 13
Tool - Fear Inoculum
Necrotic Nick- I actually like 10,000 Days more than Fear Inoculum to be honest. That album still hasn't grown on me much.
@@thrallsofmetal Saw Tool live 3 weeks ago and the Fear Inoculum songs really stood out. To me you have to hear it live to fully embrace it. Insane show.
My fav comeback's- Godflesh A world lit only by fire, Obituary- s/t, Tool Fear Innoculum, Immortal Northern Chaos Gods.
Necrotic Nick- That Godflesh album is one of my favorites actually and I blanked on that one. It's definitely more than qualified to be on here.
Black Flag these days is just sell out Greg Ginn and some hired guns
@@FirebirdCamaro1220 I hated how they handled the firing of Ron Reyes, it was totally classless
I own 95% of the stuff on your list. As much as I Love Obituary self titled album I seem to be in the minority but I think "Inked in blood" is just as good, if not better... I like the production and Donald Tardy's drum sound on the album. Great List!!!
when are we getting a faith no more album ranking lol. Like you I love faith no more lol
@@thrallsofmetal Here ya go bud. ua-cam.com/video/nmg-OTGOrQM/v-deo.html :)
Even though it's a re-recording (technically), I nominate "The Raging Wrath Of The Easter Bunny Demo" by Mr. Bungle
@@thrallsofmetal right on, found you in both places. Yes a play by play as I was watching. Got called away, so I have to resume where I left off!
Jerry Cantrell is brilliant
Edit: second one on the video. Fucking love it
Necrotic Nick- Regardless of whether people consider them a metal band or not I had to throw Alice in Chains on there. That album was so damn good and I love that they kept going after that.
I did a metal comeback video as well. Here’s my list:
Judas Priest AOR
Testament formation of damnation
Candlemass self titled
Iron Maiden brave new world
Obituary frozen in time
Slayer christ illusion
Metallica death magnetic
Accept blood of the nations
Exodus tempo of the damned
Black Sabbath heaven and hell
Necrotic Nick- I almost had Candlemass's self titled on there. I love that album and Messiah kills on that one.
@@thrallsofmetal it’s my favorite with messiah. It’s heavy and kinda thrashy
Obituary was the band that put me into death metal 🤘🤘 watching from Portugal 🇵🇹🍷
Peace/Metal,
This should be an interesting video.
Necrotic Nick- It was definitely a fun one to do.
Satan - Life Sentence 🤘
Necrotic Nick- Shit, that would have been a good one too. Man, that band just doesn't miss honestly.
AIC has been pretty decent after Laynes death for sure
Necrotic Nick- They're such a consistent band overall. I love all their albums honestly.
Celtic Frost's Monotheist
Wormrot's Hiss
Anthrax's Worship Music
Carcass' Surgical Steel
Cynic's Traced In Air
Gorguts' Colored Sands
Confessor's Unraveled
Cirith Ungol's Forever Black
Judas Priest's Painkiller
Bathory's Nordland I/II
And Amebix's Sonic Mass
Necrotic Nick- Solid list. I would have had Angel of Retribution on there instead of Painkiller since that last Ripper album was terrible and you have the return of Halford. I haven't jammed Wormrot's new one so I couldn't include that one as well was Confessor, Cirith Ungol and Bathory. I prefer more of the early stuff from Bathory rather than the later era material. Amebix's Sonic Mass is a killer album though.
Shadow Gripped by Cancer. Solid return to Death Metal/Thrash and pretty much their second comeback album because Spirit In Flames was......ugh.
Necrotic Nick- I thought Shadow Gripped was a pretty decent album but it would definitely qualify here.
@@DJAnubisMetalTavernRadio Darkest Day was TERRIBLE!
@@robertsparling917 - Boooooooo lol
Necrotic Nick- Obituary has had a number of albums that can be called comeback albums. There's a fair a mount of peaks and valleys in that discography. Also, this was just 10 of my personal favorites in terms of comeback albums, Robert. There are tons I could have brought up... and you missed GWAR's "Violence Has Arrived, Judas Priest's "Angel of Retribution", Kreator's "Violent Revolution", Autopsy's "Macabre Eternal" and Black Sabbath's "Heaven and Hell". Can't list them all though.
@@thrallsofmetal 😄
Swansong rips 🤘
Necrotic Nick- Eh, Don't Believe a Word is a pretty cool song.
@@thrallsofmetal Black Star is catchy as hell. Polarized as well.
Opeth must have been influenced by Cynic , maybe even Hypocrisy. I can't think of anything else prior to Cynic that combined Death Metal with Pink Floyd style music and Vocals
Necrotic Nick- It's possible. I think Opeth's influences were all over the place but I wouldn't be surprised if they were big Cynic fans at all.
I really like that obituary album also exodus. End it now great song
Painkiller if that's considered one after 2 lame albums
Necrotic Nick- I had Angel of Retribution on my rough draft list since it was the return of Halford and it followed Demolition which was a turd as well.
669, heh heh
Necrotic Nick- Dirty numbers... lol
