I've been a professional drummer on the road for 44 years! !! Never had a day job, only drums! !!! Played and toured with countless artists and major touring bands.... Totally love these lessons! !! Never to old to learn. . Love your easy going,no pressure approach! !! It's great for any age or level player! !! Keep em coming please! !!! HAPPY. NEW YEAR. .... DeBlurr
"Aint too proud to beg" The Temptations.Esp. the start of the song.Great vids, just love `em .......Keep up the good work.
William Benjamin, Richard Allen, Uriel Jones, and later James Gadson...keepers of the Motown Beat!
King Bee exactly
Exactly! Kept thinking about Uriel Jones!
King Bee L1C4!
The whole beginning of the drum solo in Moby Dick live at Prince Albert hall has a ton of examples of this exact fill. John Bonham knew what was up
Absolutely, "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" - it's one of the best music documentaries I've ever seen, and possibly my favourite DVD ever!
Nice job giving respect to The Funk Brothers! Some of the all time greatest players. I have so much love for those guys.
The tom-variant of this is my favorite intro/fill. It's great. It sounds entirely "wrong" when played slowly, but you demonstrate that when you bring it all together at speed, with ghost notes it's brilliant. I'd searched for what this fill was for a long time so thank you for this video!
This is my favorite fill, and I've always noticed it. My friends and I called it the Motown fill.
Thanks for sharing, the drums made a major contribution to the Motown sound, so great to see it demonstrated.
what you pointed out with the one hit him fill tells me allot of my style of playing. Very helpful lesson
I just wanted to say, your lessons are the most informative I've ever seen on UA-cam. Although in the beginning, I wasn 't really convinced with your style of teaching, now I realise that all of your video's are very interesting! Thank you very much, Stephen! :)
As for from Motown drummers, I've always loved Uriel Jones' work on the original version of Diana Ross's Ain't No Mountain High Enough. He really lays back on the beat and his fill at the 5:31 mark is absolutely perfect for that particular spot in the song.
The fill that leads into the very beginning of "Someone Else's Arms" by MAE. Love it! (And have borrowed it many, many times)
I love your lessons and your delivery. Kenny Aronoff's - Jack and Diane fill comes to mind immediately. Another is Scott Rockenfields fill on Queensryche Silent Lucidity, Nigel Olson - Someone saved my life tonight and any Danny Carey fill!!!
I've always played/heard this ending on Floor tom with R.hand instead of kick. Like you said though, many variations. love the kick version :)
Just discovered your vids. Super helpful. Thanks so much for taking the time. You knowledge is deep but your communication is clear. Just what I need :)
Thanks for educating the younger generation to know the roots of the music they dig. The 6 stroke roll, one of my faves. Opening fill to "Ain't Too Proud To Beg".
Stephen your channel is AMAZING. You are a great teacher bro. Keep it coming!
This is so helpful for me. I am trying to program drums and the way you break it down makes it straightforward
You’re the best teacher I’ve watched! Great strategy! Thank you for teaching me and so many other’s!
Thanks so much...glad it helped!
It's often hard to tell when his fills actually start and end, but I love how Matt Halpern ends the song "Make Total Destroy". Btw Stephen gonna be signing up to for your lessons very soon I love how you teach, you truly have a gift for it.
The opening fill off of "Thriftstore Jewelry" By The Bad Plus off there album Prog always gets to me because it's so simple, but it lays the foundation for the song,
Phil Collins In The Air Tonight. That break is SICK
So. Good.
Love the video, Stephen! So clear, so enthusiastic, so knowledgeable!
A couple of my favourites ....
The opening of "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" (the first biggie from the team of Whitfield-Strong, representing a fairly radical departure both for the Temptations and the Motown sound. A dry, brittle, stripped-down sound).
The beginning (and the final) notes of "Behind Painted Smile" by the Isley Brothers.
"Nowhere To Run".... Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.
"Love Is Like An Itching In My Heart".... Diana Ross and the Supremes.
Thanks for the video. I'm not a drummer.... but an ex-DJ (and radio presenter).
Ain't too proud beg intro is all the time classic motown fill. One of my favorites. Such a great tune too!
You did not mention Uriel Jones as the third drummer. Each drummer had a signature pick up at the beginning of a song. Pistol had his, Uriel had his and Benny had his, but according to Pistol in the documentary, all of their pick ups came from Benny.
Yea, they were all derived from the original one that Benny came up with. Thanks for jumping in and clarifying that!
Aint to Proud to Beg - the temptations! (love the fills and the snare and bass beats played together)
He's one of the best metal drummers for sure!
Carter Beuford- Say Goodbye! For me the four stroke roll fill starting around 1:10 is amazing. It show his speed and control but, it also shows dynamics and his ability to use accents. The fill adds so much musically to the song. I've heard it a million times and I am always impressed by it.
This Old Heart of mine!!! The Isley Brothers!!
awesome lesson!! Thanks!
I am sooo glad I found your channel. Thanks.
Great lesson man, thanks a lot!
Hey man thanks for your posts, I just found your page and love it, I've played for a few years now and am self taught but have recently decided to try and up my game and altho I only have limited understanding of technical terms (even time signature names) your style of teaching is proving really helpful to me so thanks!
Makes my day to hear it!
To me this the distinctive drum roll of Motown, Four tops, "I can't help myself, (Sugar pie Honey bunch) about 12 seconds into the song and again 1.52 seconds but more pronounced. It sometimes begins a track, Isley brothers, "This Old Heart of mine", so straight away you know it is the Funk Brothers and Motown. Fabulous!
I love this fill and all it's variations. A close second is Wil Calhoon on Living Color's Middle Man. There's a fill before the guitar solo, after Corey Glover sings the line '......something special'. I love that fill! . Either that, or Stewart Copeland on The Police's Miss Gradenko, going from the guitar solo into the final chorus of the song. None of them are particularly difficult, but they all serve their respective songs so well!
Jen Ledger "Skillet" in the song "Whispers in the Dark" towards the end of the song there is a fill performed but Jen and then followed by a guitar lick and rock break.
Nice video. Your snare sounds incredible. Cheers!
Brann Dailor in the beginning of The Wolf Is Loose. It's a simple fill but it's so awesome!
I love the drum fills on The Four Tops version of Walk Away Renee
I'm really diggin your video lessons; great stuff! It's hard to pick, but I've always loved the fills in Sober by Tool.
Excellent - Thanks Bro!!
There's a fill that brings in the last section of 'Night on Disco Mountain' by David Shire on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. It's a little one bar solo break, a little syncopated thing down the toms, and then an open hihat. It's pretty simple but it's just so beautifully executed, lovely sound, sets up the section perfectly. Makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
That's amazing! Necessity is the mother of invention, and this is a great example of how restrictions encouraged creativity. They were unable to use the crash or open hi-hat, s o they had to "invent" a style . Thank you for your videos.
I have been obsessed with the snare fill from Sweet's Ballroom Blitz since the age of 8. True story.
Steve, I was watching a CD of Standing in the Shadows of Motown. If you haven't seen it it covers some of the groves and gives tons of history. Thanks for what you do.
Great fill in "make me smile" by Chicago - Danny Seraphine is the drummer!
Great fill in "store bought bones" by The Racontours, and lastly the fill at the end of Led Zeppelin's Rock & Roll, probably my favorite of them all! Bohnam did indeed "know what was up"
I play with Nolan Porter and he's a really cool guy. This fill is a really useful one.
Charles and Eddie "Would I lie to You"! Funky cut!
Mitch Mitchell on "Voodoo Chile" is one of my favourite solos, also the intro into "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" is pretty bad ass, sets up the whole song.
Excellent!
Thanks so much . I was just trying to figure that fill out lol
I LOVE Ray Luzier's fills in Army of Anyone-Goodbye. BTW great lesson as always; cheers from Argentina
Phil Collins made a living using Motown fills....and was very good at it.
Ha!brilliant wonderfull.i always wonderd about this fill.
Yeah, they're my main inspiration for drumming, his playing style is just so unique
im not a drummer but u've really inspired me. thank you :)
Hey Stephen...Love this fill for it’s simplicity & versatility. It works in so many ways. Question - your snare drum has a great sound, no ringing, low volume or overtones and a solid “thud”. How would I tune my snare to your level...some tips please.Bob
could u do a video on the five stroke roll across the kit or six stroke roll
I use this fill A LOT and I didn't know that it was/is a very special-signature-top-of-the-chart drum fills :D I dug it from Chad Smith and Steve Jordan at the first time..Thanks Steven for the knowledge! Regards from your Indonesia, we watch you far from there :D
Great thanks from Australia
I'm not sure what artist or song this fill is from but it brings me so much joy I have to share it. It's a snare hit on the and of 4 and then one followed by hitting the open high hat three times on the ands while closing the hh on 2,3 and 4
I wasn't aware of the 'no crash cymbal' recording. Neat.
That's the exact fill Darren Jessee does at the beginning of Alice Childress by Ben Folds Five. Nice history lesson.
Love Comes In Spurts by Richard Hell and The Voidoids has this fill inbetween the verses. Sounds terrific in a (Punk) rock song too.
The classic Motown hits are awesome. The music is commercial and accessible, but there is so much musicianship and great feel in it. It had to sound great on AM radio (dull and in mono) in cars (on "lovers lane" where young couples made out) because that was the only way back in the day for these guys. I am a musician and teacher myself (piano). There is no way around Motown for a music student. Thanks for the lesson!
This Old Heart Of Mine. Papa Zita.
This isn't necessarily my all-time favourite fill, but just one that comes to mind: in the song "Siva" by Smashing Pumpkins, right before the mellow "Sprinkle all my kisses on your head" section, Jimmy Chamberlin plays a killer fill that sends him from the hats to around the toms. It's perfect but you need to listen to it to get what I really mean.
I LOVE the fills on My Girl and the utter (controlled) craziness of Tears Of A Clown. On My Girl the drum mics top out and distort just slightly with every drum fill; it sounds awesome. Is that due to the use of a ribbon mic? Thank you for this great channel and your great instruction!
awesome fill! i love Jose Pasillas from incubus and mainly try to drum along to them and chilli peppers. i want something new to drum to, maybe motown would be cool to try, any recommendations?
The drum fill for "Ain't too proud to beg" by the Temps!!!
Yes!
Every time I hear that fill, I always thought it had a single stroke four rather than the double strokes. Both sound great
Drums sound good man. What are you running that 57 on the snare into?
i always liked the 6 stroke roll and bohnam triplet stuff that goes on in manic depression.
This is a great video, and really good background on the Funk Brothers. You say some really interesting stuff about how the recording process affected their playing. Fascinating!
BTW... Is that the snare from a Premier XPK kit? I'm moving abroad in a few months and not sure if I can part with that kit. Best snare for funk/Soul playing??
Nice snare sound, can you tell me what you are using?
Drummer Michael Miley from Rival Sons cites Motown drumming as his main influence besides the obvious Bonham, and it shows - he opens their album Pressure and Time with this exact fill.
great!
Favorite lick....Neil Peart. Bytor and the Snow Dog at 3:51....the other ones after that are nice too.
Sweet !!
Yeah, that starts at 8:56 - it's the amazing dynamics that make it sound so unbelievably great!
I totally agree with what you said about current music owing it's existence to music that laid the foundation. However, I think it's pretty fair to say that students learn much better if they're playing music they're passionate about. Exposing them to music like old school motown is definitely great, but in the end maybe just teaching them what they really want to know is the way to go? I dunno, haha. Anyways, great lesson as always!
I'm not sure if it's my favorite drum fill, but this drum fill has influenced my drumming style more than any other fill I can think of. The beginning fill to "The Eleventh Hour" by August Burns Red.
fave drum fill "Tell me Why" Ringo does a double hand triplet fill
Mr Pitiful by Otis Redding - the drum fill at 0.07 = perfection
The Tempations "Don't you go" has the famous drum fill
I saw the Funk Brothers live at the Montreal Jazz Fest a few years ago. They are such an inspiration, check out the DVD Standing in the Shadow of Motown for some great insight and juicy tidbits about the lives of these incredible musicians during one of the most exciting musical decades of the last century. Too many favorite fills to chose one! But Buddy Guy's Where is the Next One Coming From with the great late Richie Hayward on the album Damn Right I got The Blues ranks quite high,
Glad to see so much Tool in these comments :)
I think it is hard to say which is my favorite drum fill so I will name a few fills that I found really interesting:
Dixie Dregs: (And again) Hamsterdam. Fill is around 2:18. (Rod Morgenstein)
Steely Dan: Aja. Classic Steve Gadd fill/solo
Sting: Seven Days. Mid Chorus fills. (Vinnie Colaiuta)
Tower of Power: Squib Cakes. Intro. (David Garibaldi)
Dream Theater: Stream of Consciousness. Fill is around 6:33. (Mike Portnoy).
Dream Theatre are awesome
Check out the drum intro at the beginning of "Honey Child" by Martha And The Vandellas
The fill in No one knows by Queen Of The Stone Age!! ITs really cool
ugh face meet palm
Dude! This is my favorite drum fill. I first heard it in a song by Kelly Jones. The song is over thinking. My drum teacher's drum teacher played on that album. The fill is around 1:00
These videos are great, you are a good online teacher. I would really like to see a compilation video of loads of fills, it would be really cool. Favourite drum fills: the fill at the end of Pushit by Tool - Drummer Danny Carey, and the fill at the beggining of Gillz by Volto! - Drummer Danny Carey again.
Tool Lateralus in the second solo because is so powerful, and the intro of Grey Street because simple and beautiful, two really different but i like both.
the funk brothers in the snake pit!!
Favourite fill is the 3-limb triplets in Avenged Sevenfold - Critical Acclaim (Critical Acclaim-The Rev drums and vocals only for a drums only version) at around 1:53
do you have some transcriptions of him?Possible chops is a great site but, like the name implies, more about choppy fills . . .I also found some stuff on drummerworld, but i need more
I love the fill in Tool Vicarious, it goes R L Kick Both. tom - tom - bass drum -snare+crash. Really fast, i love it cause it`s simple and i just learned it. :D
I love the long fill in Tom Sawyer...Rush!
Hi... I'm from the Philippines.. is it ok if post something local to me.. a local song I mean? ... cause there are fills in it especially on the intro which I have a really hard time trying to break down.... the song is Hallelujah by Bamboo...
Soundgarden - Slaves and Bulldozers (MATT CAMERON) is full of awesome fills. If I had to choose, 5:00-5:15 has a good one. Also, the very end of the song from 6:28 on. There are even some souped up Pat Boone Debbie Boones at the beginning.
