It's not because Asian don't spend much on entertainment that they are not represented in Hollywood. It's because of the negative stereo types.

My advice to Asian Americans: stop placing your chips and banking on Hollywood to do you right. Support and consume Asian media from Asia like K-Dramas, Korean film, Korean shows, C Dramas, Chinese shows and Chinese film. It’s where we are portrayed with no strings attached. No weird caveats that you see in Asian representation in Western media. None of the whole making the character’s whole personality about being Asian. Just good writing, better quality(yes, now a days better than Hollywood’s quality), a variety of genres/themes, and the character just happens to be Asian.
And the success of Asian media from Asia time and time again proves to be the driving for of leverage we have in the Western media space. Look at Bruce Lee’s career even. He was a struggling actor in Hollywood that had to cover his face with a mask and had no speaking lines. It wasn’t until he got frustrated, went to Asia, created movies in how he wanted to be portrayed, those movies becoming international hits, THEN did Hollywood come knocking at his door to allow him to be portrayed the way he wanted to be portrayed. It’s literally the blueprint.
You can even relate this to what Malcom X once said about Chinese/Asian people. “There used to be a saying of ‘you’ve got a Chinaman’s chance’ which implied you’ve got no chance. This saying came to be when China was poor and weak. But when China became stronger, so did the respect for the Chinese grow in the Western countries they lived in.” I’m paraphrasing a bit but he was pretty much implying a strong home country/base equates to a stronger diaspora. We need to invest in an even stronger home base for our media back home in our native countries. The respect in Western media will follow.

The US prefers a weak China subservient to the west. China becoming stronger in the past decade has not been one of respect, but one of fear and loathing of the east overtaking the west. The booming Japanese economy of the 80s posed a threat to US supremacy until the enforced Plaza Accord stifled the J economy for decades. China won’t be as easy to take down even with sanctions, embargos, tariffs and million dollar demonization campaigns. Until a military conflict happens, we can enjoy terrific Chinese dramas such as The Disguiser, Nirvana in Fire, The Untamed, Rise of the Phoenix, Joy of Life, Tribes and Empires that have attracted fans among Chinese and non-Chinese viewers. Talented hot and charismatic Chinese actors also have fan girls of various nationalities swooning as seen with the enthusiastic reception Xiao Zhan received at Milan Fashion week .

No, to what you said, and I'm Asian from an Asian country. If Asian Americans/Westerners only support Asian entertainment from Asia, all you are doing is benefit the Asian ( not American ) film industries. Then Asian American talent will have to got to Asia for work and that will further denote them as "foreigners" in America. You want Western respect for Asian media, OK, but then its Asians in Asia who will benefit not Asians who are citizens of Western countries. I would like to see AMERICAN stories with Asians in them, acting like Westerners/Americans because that's what they are. Bruce Lee ( an American ) never moved beyond Bruce Lee the kung fu guy. I want more than that for Asian Western entertainers. And I want Western stories from the West and Asian stories from Asia. The last thing I want is Asian Americans trying to act Asian in Asian movies,, some of them having Western accents when speaking Asian languages - inauthentic. The diaspora should be loyal to the West, not Asia, don't be a cultural traitor, because that's a slippery slope.

@@gobyfish1399 What you don't understand is that the system is rigged against Asian Americans. Ke Huy Quan tried and had to spend decades working as an extra until he got lucky with EEAO and that's him being lucky. Many Asian-Americans have had to go to Asia in order to become successful and they've managed that in a few years, whereas in America they've had to spend decades. This is a massive neglect of talent. Michelle Yeoh became famous in America over 2 decades ago when Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon came out.
What is the notable Hollywood work she's done between that and EEAO? Nothing.
What happened when Asian superstars went to Hollywood? 99.9% of their projects are inferior to what they've done in Asia.
Why should they be loyal to the West, when the West treats them like garbage? You go be loyal to the West if you're such a big fan of Hollywood.

Hollywood is getting boring, they don't have a lot of new ideas, X-Men XI, Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones, etc, they are all old franchises.
Plus, Hollywood has never really cared about casting East Asian actors. This is why a lot of Asian people don't care for it.

And Hollywood's need to remake everything, focus on superhero content along with casting the same 10-20 actors in everything, despite there being thousands of talent actors available, is just so annoying. Then there's also how many prominent Hollywood actors who just act as themselves in everything. When I watch content from Asia, I see these actors constantly challenging themselves with new types of roles.

Because Hollywood has the most influence with their vast reach. And they have the ability to influence the masses more so than any other entity. And when this huge marketing machine continues to put out nasty stereotypes of Asians over & over again (always projecting Asians to be oddball out), especially Asian males then its not surprising when so many Asians in society are verbally assaulted, taunted, Asian children bullied, elders physically assaulted, and paid less money for doing the same engineering job then both their white and black counterparts (look at the study done by Penn State Univ). That's why, Asians need to wake up and get involved in politics and don't be fooled by DEI, it will only hurt Asians, its just like Affirmative Action only worded differently. Affirmative Action policies at elite Universities forced Asian students to score higher on SAT and GPA than any other ethnicity. Same will happen to professional fields like law, medicine, engineering. Many who have researched it is clearly showing the road map. As DEI requires more blacks to be accepted as medical doctors, lawyers, engineers and it is being done by lowering the test standards for entrance. Just read what AMA (American Medical Association) is doing, they are going to start lowering their test standards so that more "people of color" can pass the test and become doctors. Well do you know what that means for Asians who were already passing these exams without it being lowered? Now they have to compete for that MD job at Kaiser, Stanford or any other hospital against another minority who didn't do as well. Also, now these hospitals under DEI are required to hire a certain amount of black applicants no matter what. It's already happening at many high tech firms in the marketing and engineering departments. Asian people have no clue what is going and better wake up!

I think the best way to depict Asians in an authentic manner is to depict their traditional systems of values in a positive light, using terms that the wider audience can understand. For a hero to say, "this will bring me honor," does little to an viewer who hardly uses the word honor or perceives they have scant use for that concept. This is a challenging task for western producers of entertainment, made even more difficult by the need to use western words or values to explain the plot.

I don't doubt that many consumers may be more inclined to gravitate towards watching films involving actors that look like them, but the pendulum is also swinging in the other direction. When identity politics becomes elevated above the quality of the plot, people become emboldened to rebel against these DEI initiatives, whose aim is to arbitrarily fill racial quotas. The issue isn't that representation is unimportant; the issue pertains to sacrificing creative integrity at the altar of political correctness.

Hollywood was established by Americans. How many Asian American are involved? We do not know. In this life, one should have integrity or principle. If the target is money, everybody no matter what race or citizenship would be involved. Hollywood already has a lot of money. It is to keep their ego and they are still being look at. It's like the USA. The world looks up to and the people still want to come. Despite their own country is wealthy and rich. Is there a thing in the world, I want to go to China or Germany to find my dream. There is nothing compared to the American Dream.

You probably were referring to yesterday. Today, the American Dream is just an illusion to many homeless and jobless Americans.

It's so fucked up how basically every other ethnicity can be depicted as being integrated in East Asia in various media, but this is **never** reciprocated. I honestly cannot recall a single game where an East Asian male protagonist is integrated in a culture outside of Asia. At least not by a western developer.
If you're a diasporic East Asian man who likes video games, the only rep you will EVER see is through a character creator. That's it. That's all you can ever hope for. And even then, there's no guarantee like in Elder Scrolls for example.

If I want to see Asians in movies I'll just watch movies from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Bhutan, Mongolian... The directors and actors know what they are doing and don't bastardize their own culture.

Asians dont as much on entertainment partially because there are fewer Asians in those entertainment spheres. Fact is, people want to see people who look and are from their culture portrayed in a story/movie/drama

Authentic representation!?!?! When I saw three non-Japanese actresses: Michelle Yeoh(Malaysian Chinese), Ziyi Zhang & Gong Li (Mainlander Chinese) portraying JAPANESE GEISHAS in Memoirs Of A Geisha, that was messed up!?!?! There are plenty of Japanese female actresses qualify for their roles! This is why Shogun was well made, all the Japanese principal roles are JAPANESE, not "Asian."
The series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel spent so much money on the details on their wardrobes and on other production details, but failed when it came to the Chinese characters and the scenes shot in Chinatown. The Chinese characters in NYC Chinatown during that period are Cantonese ToiSan peeps, and the principal actors should be speaking Cantonese or ToiSan, NOT Mandarin! I cringed when I was the set of the Chinese gambling den and heard the Loh Baan spoke Mandarin.
In the series Warrior, the Chinese principal characters spoke Cantonese/Toisan even if the actors portraying the roles weren't Cantonese Chinese, kudos to the production team on the Warrior. Details on the specific cultural and language of those roles matters.

I was reading for years, Matt Damon was one of the hotest tickets in China. I was quite surprised by this, but ole Matt got Chinese girls to open their wallets and buy tickets.
Everything, Everywhere All At Once was a hybrid sort of movie, one foot in America, the other in Asia. The movie made money but it was not a grand slam. Overseas sales were not that impressive.
If an Asia based story produced in America is then coolly received by Asian audiences, is it because when say the Chinese want to see an American film, they want a cast that doesn't look like them?

As an Asian American myself who grew up in Asia during my childhood, I find EEAAO is a really weird and bloated movie. I'm probably the minority who doesn't enjoy the movie.

I like the Fung bros and their conclusions at the end - maybe there is money left on the table, but do gen Z Asian Americans want to spend it on entertainment about Asian Americans ? Because Gen X and Boomers are spending it on Asian entertainment from Asia, no subtitles required, and not white faces either.

Why would i pay for a movie to insult me? Imo any western made media about asian people is going to always promote self hate or pick on some political scab. Look at 3 body, look at expat.
I would rather have more stuff like beef.

@@hsuehhs1 I didn't see it so I can't tell, I can only say in recent projects they've been trying harder especially with EEAO and even in that, they had to emasculate many of the male characters, with only 1 scene giving Waymond a traditional masculine role. I can't unsee stuffing a particular trophy up the butt.

Its because american actors and actress are hired based on the movie itself is american. Bollywood cant hire americans if the movie is based on hindi. Same for asians they cant hire americans based on asian movie that has asian traditional pull on it. Unless the movie will represent characters outside our world like for instance i think star wars should hire asians not just in china but also cambodians, thailand, philippines etc. As an alien from other galaxy. Yes movies like star wars can represent cultures not only focus on american. You see asians in movies are hired based on stereotype like either martial art and nerdy so thats the only representation americans knows about asians nothing more outside the box of those 2. Americans also think the entirety that asians represent is chinese as a whole continent of asian but india does not represent china so are other asian countries. Needless to say they know so little about asian and at least they know much about hispanic and mexicans now as in representation in hollywood nowadays. If hollywood is to hire more asians they gotta learn more or rather they are stuck in american way because americans would rather watch an american tv series and movies they wouldnt want to put an asian on it because theyll lose interest. In other words hollywood might lose its market if they put asians on it because the racist veiwer would lose an interest.

I’m hella white (German/Norwegian) and grew up watching kung-fu theater and doing martial arts. My gf of 6 years is Taiwanese. I watch a lot of Asian flicks, have my entire life.
I feel like the biggest issue was Asian people portraying other cultures like a Japanese guy playing Chinese and Vietnamese etc. which was a big problem in the 80’s and 90’s I think (not necessarily in that order could be a Chinese guy playing another nationality). This was even worse when it was a Native American playing an Asian character..
When you have like 10 main male Asian actors in Hollywood that kinda happens I guess. Especially factoring in age. “Oh we need an old Asian guy, just use Pat Morita or James Hong interchangeably”. I could see it being insulting but I can’t speak for the Asian populace.
Hiroyuki Sanada and Andrew Koji have been in a lot of stuff lately and I think they rock as action stars. I think you’d see more Asians in Hollywood movies if there were more scripts written with them in mind. It just hasn’t been a thing since like the Jet Li era.
I think Everything Everywhere All At Once, Crazy Rich Asians; and Parasite (movie) likely are opening up the door to get more American theaters playing movies with Asian cast again. The last time I saw a major interest in Asian cinema was when Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon came out- it’s all anyone would talk about.
