Brings back such great memories of combining soy beans with my pop back in 1969. My pop and me (I was 12) rebuilt a John Deere 55 with a Hercules Engine. Fresh coat of John Deere green pepper paint, new belts and new wood on the header. It was a beauty. Pop let me operate while he walked behind to see if we lost to much beans. I will never forget those days. We combined soy beans, rye and corn (with a corn header bought at an auction). I enjoyed those days with my pop and thank the good Lord for every minute!

We are alot like you, we are a small farm in northcentral montana and we use a case 930 tractor for putting up alfalfa two versatile 400 swathers ,a case 1370, case 2670 and we have a 1470 and 1030 that don't run along with a international 1440 and the newest machine we have is a case 1660 that we got just this summer. I grew up running this old equipment and I love it. Ya the new equipment is nice and all but I would get stir crazy running newer stuff with GPS. I like driving and not just sitting there and letting it drive itself. They were built with no plastic or fiberglass and don't have all the electronics and sensors that you need a computer to figure out what's wrong with it.

@@nascarf50 Exactly!!! Generations before us taught us that if you want to make a living on farming, you can’t be hungry for new equipment all the time. You have to make it work with what you’ve got and be proud enough of what you’re doing not to worry about being judged by people with brand new million dollar equipment. Sounds like you guys have that same philosophy! It works well for us! We have found a lot of people showing respect for our UA-cam videos using our “vintage” equipment! We can never compete with the millennial farmer’s equipment but that’s ok!

When i was 16 i had a job at a wheat research centre in Australia. They used headers similar to this in size to harvest the experimental wheat. I had to stand on the side filling up large sugar bag size samples of the wheat. 11 hours a day in 120 heat + plus what ever heat the engine threw off. Not a fun job. But $700 a week for a 16 yr old in the mid to late 80's, sure put a lot of joy back into it.

I started operating a JD 55 Hillside when I was 12 in 1961. Bought it from my dad in 1969 and traded for a 95H in 1972. No one could see the back of the header or auger while seated unless you really leaned forward. 90% of the time, especially in short grain in rolling terrain, the operator had to stand up. Every independent farmer I know has disconnected the kill switch on the seat of his farm equipment unless he hires a lot of untrained help. Somehow we were smart enough to be careful and most all the farmers I grew up with are still farming and many of us prefer to drive rather than sit while GPS takes our job away.

Yes, it was. I'm 75 and do remember those older combines! Maybe slow but it beat shocking the grain and hauling it in to the stationary thresher in the barnyard! Ron

Old Machine getting it done! I’m guessing late 50s vintage? I had a square back 95 in the early 70s.

That's early 50's, my Dad bought a new 55 in 53, the later ones had a 45 degree tilt to the steering wheel where the earlier ones like this one were straight up and down with no tilt.

Only draw back , by the end of the day you ate half of what you harvested .
    Better have a outside hose.

    Don't even talk about barley.

I had a regular 55 when I started out back in the early70s. Did a good job working, but terribly under powered in the hills. That Hercules engine was a major disappointment.
