1954 John Deere 55H combine. John Deere's first production self propelled Hillside combine!
I've gotta know.....whats the song playing in the background?
We had a JD 55 roundback and I didn't know they had a hill version. Is it self leveling or does the operator have to level it?
Auto and manual override leveling
That gleaner will really thresh wheat good. 13% moisture according to on board computer
I had a regular 55 when I started out back in the early70s. Did a good job working, but terribly under powered in the hills. That Hercules engine was a major disappointment.
I drove one of these as a kid. My dad bought it used about 1964 or so. We had some steep hills on our dry farm in Idaho. I remember greasing all the bearings, etc. seemed like I always missed one.
Great vid. I don't know what year this machine is, but we ran a 1958 model 55 for several years in wheat. On this machine, I had never seen a sickle driver setup like this before. Looks like it is doing a good job.
In india this technology is beginning
Ppapčweđm
U got gps on that thing
It looks good for it sitting for 42 years
Just wondering does it have autosteer?? Joking
I know at least 50 people I wish would walk into the back of that with their heads down.
Looks perfectly safe and forgiving.
I bought my IH 80 combine from Ken Foertsch. Great guy!
He is a close friend of mine.
@@hillside5543 If he wants to see it in action, direct him to my channel. I cut 5-10 acres with it every year.
Tough machines. Only draw back , by the end of the day you ate half of what you harvested . Better have a outside hose. Wife wouldn't let you.in the house. Don't even talk about barley. Good days though.
No thanks I'll stay in the cab of my combine
This just showed up on my recommended, this is so cool
We are using an antique John Deere 4400 combine to do our corn harvest! We only have about 50-80 acres a year and it gets the job done for us! We have a family-friendly youtube channel showcasing the fun we have on our multi-generational family farm. We would love for you to check it out!
Fucking send it
My old man had one of these in the early 70's and a 95 in the 80's I don't think he thought it was that fun though
So glad people keep these things working!
My dad owned a MF 585 PTO header. Haven't seen a new one that can do a better job on oats!! Though it was never that good with wheat...
Don't like that the head doesn't disengage when he gets off the seat 🤣
I started operating a JD 55 Hillside when I was 12 in 1961. Bought it from my dad in 1969 and traded for a 95H in 1972. No one could see the back of the header or auger while seated unless you really leaned forward. 90% of the time, especially in short grain in rolling terrain, the operator had to stand up. Every independent farmer I know has disconnected the kill switch on the seat of his farm equipment unless he hires a lot of untrained help. Somehow we were smart enough to be careful and most all the farmers I grew up with are still farming and many of us prefer to drive rather than sit while GPS takes our job away.
@@bobcrump3745 Ah yes the old safety is your own responsibility argument. Still true no matter how much crying takes place.
By the end if the day he will have wished he had goggles on because of the chaff. Talk about it. I couldn't wait to hit the shower to get it off. People now days have no idea with their enclosed combines.
This was back in the days when you actually had a fighting chance of fixing it yourself.
Yeah I'll bet you a lot of farmers want to go back to the good old days of sitting on an open platform with 120 decibel noise blowing your ears out in the 100° heat moving at 1 mile an hour. Yeah the good old days.
And leaving it when ya run over a ground bees nest
Not only that but this technology was friggin revolutionary at that point!
@@JHruby Yea back when that thing was new you could ride it for a couple years and pay for a farm. Now you have to be a slave for 40 years and still never own anything.
Old girl still has it

Nice! You got to be either desperate or nostalgic to bring this thing back to life.
We definitely don’t have the best equipment on our multi-generational family farm. But we love doing harvest the old school way…and there’s always some shenanigans involved! Takes me back to the days of pull type JD combine my dad had. Watch him fight with the old wisconson engine that wouldnt start until it was dam good and ready to.

😁😆😊😇
When i was 16 i had a job at a wheat research centre in Australia. They used headers similar to this in size to harvest the experimental wheat. I had to stand on the side filling up large sugar bag size samples of the wheat. 11 hours a day in 120 heat + plus what ever heat the engine threw off. Not a fun job. But $700 a week for a 16 yr old in the mid to late 80's, sure put a lot of joy back into it.
We started out with a 40 then 45's then a 55, Back then the 55 was going big from the 40.

I love seeing these old machines in the field, couldn't imagine running this in 95 degree sun cutting barely, first machine I ran was a 69 John deer 105. At least it had a swamp cooler as long as you didn't stop suddenly or hit a big bump with the machine or you would get a shower

We are alot like you, we are a small farm in northcentral montana and we use a case 930 tractor for putting up alfalfa two versatile 400 swathers ,a case 1370, case 2670 and we have a 1470 and 1030 that don't run along with a international 1440 and the newest machine we have is a case 1660 that we got just this summer. I grew up running this old equipment and I love it. Ya the new equipment is nice and all but I would get stir crazy running newer stuff with GPS. I like driving and not just sitting there and letting it drive itself. They were built with no plastic or fiberglass and don't have all the electronics and sensors that you need a computer to figure out what's wrong with it.
@@nascarf50 Exactly!!! Generations before us taught us that if you want to make a living on farming, you can’t be hungry for new equipment all the time. You have to make it work with what you’ve got and be proud enough of what you’re doing not to worry about being judged by people with brand new million dollar equipment. Sounds like you guys have that same philosophy! It works well for us! We have found a lot of people showing respect for our UA-cam videos using our “vintage” equipment! We can never compete with the millennial farmer’s equipment but that’s ok!
Look at the size of the field.think how long it would take or did take using this and several others machines. Also even longer with horse drawn . Awesome video and job, thank you for adding a little nostalgia for the younger generation to see what farming was like , one again Thanks.👍👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 praying for a good crop.

Man, being able to stand up and reach in the hopper and get some wheat gum. Great memories!
Amen to that. The very best memories. We had a 95 however 🙂

I can't believe someone was using that as production equipment in 1979. Maybe 69!
Looking at some of this equipment brings back memories. We farmed in Eastern Washington back in the 1980's and 1990's and those old CAT D-4's and D-6's were still pretty common back then. We started out with an Allis Chalmers HD-6.
Run johon deer 3300 love johon deer combine it was head of there time
After 44 years of neglect.
I learned to drive a JD 55 with a Neil leveler which was made in Garfield , Washington. My family farmed in Eastern Washington and used it 10-15 years before updating to International 403 combine with 4 way leveling. Doug Floch
Doug, I have one of those as well . Might be running next year!
I lived in Spokane on two occasions and remember well the Palouse area. Those endless fields of wheat were a sight to see. Like ocean waves when the wind blew.
Hard to believe this machine was state of the art in its day . To those in the know, was this a normal cutting/threshing speed for this vintage of combine?
Nah, he's just trying to make the job last since he's having fun. Raise the header and giver 'er hell!
Yes, it was. I'm 75 and do remember those older combines! Maybe slow but it beat shocking the grain and hauling it in to the stationary thresher in the barnyard! Ron
@@loisgustafson1558 Thank you for your reply.
All that spinning metal and open belts, no wonder so many people got/get killed/injured on farms
The dumb were killed, now the dumb live!
Your 8 year old son could work on them then.
That's wen people were though
You are lucky if things built today last five years.
I love seeing these old machines. Our family farmed in Eastern Washington from 1983-1999. There were still a good number of 95H combines around back then. Started getting scarce toward the end but as long as the metal didn't wear through inside, they truly would go forever.
