I feel a visceral dislike for Electric Callboy. I don't know why, from what I've heard of theirs the music is good. It's just... Something that I can't place.
The duck is the unofficial 6th member of Alestorm. What a great song, and what a name for an album, haha! Excited for this album when it comes out. Gonna add this to my pirate metal playlist.
new Lagerstein single released at the end of February and now new Alestorm single. the years has been good to Pirate Metal so far.
And Christopher Bowes is definitely a treasure that keeps on giving. We're not mentioning what happened with Gloryhammer and Angus though.
Most of my favorite bands have contracts with Napalm records, like Alein weaponry, Gloryhammer, and Alestorm.
I got to see Alestorm and Gloryhammer back in December with a mate, it was our first time seeing them live, and I didn't expect it to be that insane, the whole crowd was moshing, including me, and they broke the record for most crowd surfers at that venue, I think it was 300 something. I definitely recommend you see them live if you get the chance, one of the best live bands out there I'd say!
For me the criteria that makes it a Keytar is the little "neck" thing sticking out on the Left side, the one with the Modifier buttons. Without that neck it can very well be a Synth, with the neck it will always be a Keytar. Cheers / B.
Very good song indeed. Love the more serious approach on this one, brings me back to their more dirty and thrashy days with 'Captain Morgan's Revenge' and 'Black Sails at Midnight'. Alestorm is back on my radar now. ^^

True, but I like the "old" Alestorm more than the actual songs. Feuerschwanz have better songs now for me. But it's still fun to listen to both, that's for sure. 😄

Love me a gimmick and it's ABSOLUTELY a pirates life for me. Was hoping for more with how much they raved about the new stuff. It's pirate Sabaton all over again. I know they're capable of better. Just not here
I feel like it's back to the OG Alestorm sound, which I very much enjoy.
I miss some of the more intricate music that used to do. I like this better than anything from the last record though.

God its so cathartic to finally see Perth on a map. The news rarely even do it for the weather. Christopher Bowes is one of the few famous people I can talk to people about who grew up in this town. He was even dux of my highschool, though a few years before I was there. Two of my favourite teachers from highshool even had positive impressions of him nearly 20 years after he had left.
Some nerdy gear info:
Rhythms guitars:
4 tracks total, all Bobo’s Custom RG (Mahogany body, maple neck through, EMG81).
Two tracks of EVH 5150III Stealth blue channel through Mesa Rectifier OS Cab Miked with sm57+m201, boosted with Maxon apex808 and two tracks of VH4 boosted with TS9 into traditional sized Mesa cab, Miked with sm57+md441 (tiny bit of Trident EQ on the way in on these).
Lead guitars: same guitar, Apex808, Soldano SLO100 into matching cab miked with a single sm57 IIRC.
You’re correct about Gareth’ Bass.
For this mix it’s a clean DI blended with the good old Sansamp PSA-1.
Chris’ vocals: u87, tweed preamp, distressor on the way in, 1176RevA and La2a in mixdown
Elliot’s vox: sm7 through tweed preamp, distressor on the way in (and some more distressor during the mix IIRC).
Drums: well, too much to write, haha. Lots of spot mics, all through Trident preamps.
Little known fact: all brass and violins etc are real (and have been since album 3 or so).
Brass: m160 through API preamp, MC77 on the way in.
Strings: Ally recorded these herself, pretty sure it’s some focusrite clarett interface with whatever mic she had.
The last part with "La Polenta Taragnarok" on the background is very telling of the fact that we listen to the same stuff..

Alestorm is definitely one of those bands that somehow sound better and better with each new album, just when you think they have peaked in talent, the next release just seems to blow it out of the water!
Oh man I agree with them being really good musicians. I think Chris is one if not the best song writer I know. Also, he's "submerged" in a lot of music genre, theres Pirate Metal with Alestorm, Power Metal with GloryHammer, Melodic Death with Wizardthrone, and only god knows what else...

They are different from anything I have seen before and I gotta know... Who makes them and are they as good as I would expect someone like *you* to use? Also Another GREAT reaction! I use JH Audio Laylas. They're professional in-ear monitors that we use on tour during shows. Custom fitted so they never come out, and they sound fantastic!

This song could be from their first album that i fell love with it. very same sounding.
I spent all the time thinking the lady in the video was some kind of Eowyn gone wrong, but becoming a goose might not be that bad! Also, i remember when Chris was on twitch, he used to show us his little farm and animals, they were so adorable! So i wouldn't be surprised if the goose was one of his :D

This band... I just absolutely love every single song they release! Doesn't matter if it's goofy or serious. Alestorm always puts a smile on my face! :)
Had to wait till the end to get the rolling sea shanty sound. Just nonstop power to start. I love the folk/sea shanty metal they normally give us. Hope they find more melody on other songs. Look forward to hearing the rest of the album. But I don’t think this will be my go to song on it.
Good review Tank, always fun to see some Alestorm. Yes agree, maybe guitar solo separate from vocals would be good. Dragonforce occasionally use a key-tar as well. I think it works best for bands that don't take themselves too seriously. Saw Alestorm with Chris using an accordion- classic!!!

I had friends in a "math metal" band (using mathematics and equations to structure song composition) and when I first found Alestorm (Black Sails at Midnight era) I was excited to get them to listen to this crazy band from Scotland...
And they absolutely took it as a gimmick that wouldn't last. They said they couldn't take Alestorm seriously with the whole pirate gimmick and keytar. This wasn't the first or only time I heard this too.
So I completely agree and have met people who can't see the talents within the band and just wright them off as some joke band that will come and go

Could checkout a UA-camr named Patty Gurdy. She was a guest on one of Alestorm's albums.
I discovered her after going down a hurdy gurdy rabbit hole after watching Korpiklaani's Rauta.
Which led me to Alestorm because she used to be in a pirate metal band Storm Seekers.
She is so good. I highly recommend her as well.

Musically, this song very much reminds me of Turisas’ first album, Battle Metal, and the titular track in particular. Perhaps a big reason for that is just how similar the MIDI instruments the bands use sound.
Anyway, great reaction! I always enjoy seeing Alestorm get some love!
The only MIDI instruments on this song are the accordion and some very faint string pads in the background. Everything else, trumpets, trombones, violins, etc is real!

@@ElliotVernon Thank you for mentioning this! Sampled instruments sound pretty good these days, so I think it’s particularly awesome to see real instruments used here and in other songs. After listening to “Magellan’s Expedition” and “Battle Metal” again, I find the differences between the sampled and real instruments to be quite massive, haha! I still associate both songs with each other, so perhaps it’s the compositions and arrangements I find similar; I think one could fit these songs into a similar sort of “genre” with each other. In any case, I love the sound of both of the songs!
@@tobiashain1987 Thank you for your excellent work, Tobias! Sometimes I wonder if I should dust off my old trumpet and start practicing again. Certainly when I first started playing trumpet I never thought one day trumpets could find their way into metal albums. I was also a very naïve kid.
I once had Gaz passed out at my house after playing a gig in my local town for a band called Waylander. We then gave the band a ride to the airport the following day and holy hell they were drinking bottles of vodka like water! It was not long after this that he joined Alestorm.
The band was Runecaster not Waylander. My apologies!

Yuhki in the Japanese Metal band Galneryus is another really good Keytar player, some say he is taking the Keytar to whole new levels. In most of the bands I have seen the Keytar is not used as a solo instrument, but Yuhki does just that in some songs. Long melodic passages, and sometimes also in syncopation with what Syu is playing on his lead guitar. It sounds absolutely awesome. I got a German band called SERIOUS BLACK a heavy power metal formed almost eight years ago they released many albums the recently was two months ago the had many great songs such as SEALING MY FATE (ACOUSTIC) very lovely song indeed and SOMEONE ELSE'S LIFE you gonna like it

Maybe I need more time, but it didnt really grab me at first listen. Feels kinda generic-Alestorm so far to me, I kinda expected more especially because I know they can deliver more and have even more intense and unique (or at least with a specific quirk) sounds and singles.
But I'm really eager to listen to the full album.
The end of the video is fucking awesome though (even more with the subtitles).

I am curious, why did you choose the union jack, instead of the Scottish flag in the thumbnail. While scottland is part of that union, the band had referred to themselves as "True Scottish Pirate Metal" xD
To be honest, it was a hard decision to make and I didn't know which one was the correct one to do. I mean, I know the band was formed in Scotland, but as far as I know, Everyone in the band is UK except for Bobo.
@@TankTheTech Haha, I was just messing with ya. This raises a interesting question if it matters where the band was founded or where the majority of members are located. I just think that the scottish accent is too strong to be ignored :D In the end it doesn't really matter.
But I really like that you include the flags of the country the members are from. It gives people some more insight.

Elliot uses Yamaha and Korg keyboards.
It says on some website somewhere that I use Yamaha, but I don't; that was just a digital piano in the studio for the previous album that I "played" on the music video for Pirate Metal Drinking Crew. But that's just a music video, that keyboard wasn't on the album.
And this is why we don't trust anything on the internet unless it can be 100% verified. Hahahaha
@@ElliotVernon I remembered seeing the Yamaha in one of the videos so thank you for pointing out that it wasn't used on the album.
@@HALberdier17 Yeah, music videos aren't always the best place to see what gear artists are actually using, because they're almost always either fake/mimed shots using whatever looks good, or just something that was in the studio that sounded good but isn't necessarily what the artist plays.
A lot of the time artists will have endorsement deals where they're obliged to always appear playing a particular brand of guitar (that's the case for Bobo and Gareth) but even then, they might choose a different model that looks better for the particular video's theme; there's an upcoming video for another song where we did exactly that. Tank just got lucky here that at least the guitars and bass are the actual ones from the record ;P
As far as I remember the drums on this new record were a Pearl Reference kit (same cymbals as this video though) and of course there's hardly any "keyboards" on the records, it's all real brass players and violinists and whatnot. My keyboard and Chris's keytar stayed at home and don't appear on the record at all.
why the hell provides Napalm a preview version with bad quality sound? you can clearly hear the compressed high frequencies. hurts my ears a bit
It‘s Vimeo. Try compress worse than UA-cam, and then UA-cam compressing it again makes it worse.
I read somewhere that castle is actually Napalm Records' corporate headquarters. As for the song, musically it reminds me a lot of their song about the Battle of Cartagena, probably the trumpets on the synth track is what's doing it.
