JACO a compelling story of prodigious talent, personal adventures and raw human vulnerability, 'JACO' presents the world of the bass guitar phenomenon Jaco Pastorius through the eyes of his family and various musical collaborators.
Produced by the Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo, and directed by Mr. Paul Marchand and Stephen Kijak, this blistering biopic contains incredible unseen footage and photography from the Pastorius family archive, and takes viewers into the heart and soul of this hugely influential cross-genre artist. Featuring interviews with an array of artists (Flea, Joni Mitchell, Sting, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Geddy Lee) and friends, 'JACO' unveils the story of his music, his life, his demise, and ultimately the fragility of great artistic genius.
I truly wish documentary made a stronger point on mental illness awareness. Jaco is a tragic example that so many people looking up to and mental illness took him away. Perhaps "Crisis" was a true representation of Jaco's mind state at that time and that what made it so frightful and amazing. RIP Mr.Pastorius was a great genius and his music will always inspire musicians of all styles.
More like tons of coke and booze
@@Rafael-vu2xn Unfortunately drugs end up being a false solution to those with Mental Health issues which magnifies the problem - a lot of people that are Bipolar or Schizophrenic fall down that road.
There are a lot more layers than just Coke and booze.
In 1972 I was the cook at our restaurant " The Lyon's Share" on 183rd St. North Miami, Jaco played with Ira Sullivan, Got to tell you guys, he liked the #11 Cheese Sandwich, he would sit in the kitchen as he ate and teach me about octaves! I was his friend, I miss him.
How cute!
Kudos and many thanks to Robert Trujillo for stepping up and making a film that truly needed to be made.
I lived up the street from Jaco's dad, Jack, the sweetest guy! Loved him. And when I think about him, I miss him to this day! He would tell me all sorts of stories about his life and Jaco's...I am sure he would have been proud of this documentary! I know I loved it!!!
I remember hearing Jaco had died. I was depressed for a week or two..
I met Jaco back in 81-82 timeframe, At Chuy's Choo Choo in Tempe. His band was setting up, he had left Weather Report and had his new band in town. I was very anxious to meet him, so I followed him into the mens room.. was just interested to get some kind of idea what sort of person he was.
Asking him if he had tried different axes, strings, he shook his head "I just work with what I got." He seemed to approach music from a less technical, more artistic, very focused point of view. While I was always experimenting with different amps, bass guitars; he was a one axe, one amp kind of guy.
He had the most amazing sound, was still using his big Acoustic 18" cabinets. I had one of those Acoustic amps; it was so big I never wanted to move it out of my practice room.. and no hi-end, slow moving cone... but he could make it work!
I built a bass like his Jbass; rosewood fingerboard, sunburst; pulled the frets, filled the holes, painted fingerboard with epoxy boat resin, sanded it down. Took some doing to get it flat with no buzzing, but it worked. Cool bass, wish I still had it..
+Jeff Papineau Thx for sharing JP !
+Jeff Papineau ----Thanks Jeff, I was there at that same concert…I was a senior in high school at the time and was playing bass and wanted to go to ASU. One of my bass buddies got me tickets and that concert changed me forever…amazing that you got to talk with Jaco and to be at Chuy's at the same time!! what an experience!!
+Jeff Papineau very cool
I was lost and devastated. Waay too soon gone. A genius gone in the blink of an eye and over something so stupid! Jaco was a lover, not a fighter sort of guy. And the bonehead bouncer probably still walks today!
very cool story
I love how the bassplayer of Metallica made this, shows you never to make assumptions about a person. He rocks hard but his taste in music is great if he likes Jaco. ^_^
+fotobyjp He gave a collector money to get it back to the family. Legally he owns it, but he makes sure the family makes all the decisions about it, and Jaco's son currently has it.
+Koen Klijnsmit what is wrong with metallica man? As jaco himself said, we shouldnt have musical prejudices.
I think you don`t join metallica if you don`t really love metal, Jaco was a jazz guy, that is why it is not a self evident match. I never said you could not love multiple music styles at once. :)
+Koen Klijnsmit Being a bass player and *not* liking Jaco is sacrilegious.
+Koen Klijnsmit I understand what you meant, but at the same time i want you to understand that most serious rock and metal musicians are seriously into classical music, jazz and blues. For instance, Testament's lead guitarist Alex Skolnick has a jazz trio project, Slayer's drummer Dave Lombardo is a jazzman too. Meshuggah's axemen are way into jazz and classical music theories. Dream Theater's guys played jazz and incorporated some of it's elements into their music. Metallica went ahead and did an entire album with Michael Kamen and the philharmonic orchestra of San Francisco. Cannibal Corpse's bassist Alex Webster was under jazz influence when he picked up the bass, and you can watch him here on youtube jamming with Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey. Robert Trujilo himself was a long time member of a groovy funky heavy band called Infectious Grooves. Some people think that metal is anti melody, anti rythm, anti groove, truth is, most metallers know their Bach, Wagner and John Coltrane tune. Peace from Morocco
I miss him as much as Frank Zappa and Miles Davis. 😭 Thanks for uploading.
Literally was so obsessed with Jaco for years when this came out. Still makes me cry and gives me goosebumps. Greatest artist to ever fucking live
My dad and I saw Jaco in New Orleans with Weather Report during their 8:30 tour and again with Word Of Mouth at Tipitinas. Jaco was truly one of the "Cats". Thank You Jaco
I went to school with his nephew. Then I clued into who this nephew's uncle had been. That was like hearing that the kid you hang with was royalty... and he didn't even really understand. I was a bass player. I understood.
MUST SEE!! The impact this man had on the musical landscape cannot be over emphasized!
he changed the world. not an overstatement, but most people don't know.
JACOBASSTORIUS!!!
+Matt Reis ahahaha you guys made me laugh
Mhent Gab man, if you watch something illegally copied at least don't share it to everyone, let the creators make some money. Otherwise no one is gonna make films like this anymore.
Even the trailer is perfect.
Just screened for one night only in Bellingham, I didn't know what to expect, who would show up. Turned out that the theater was packed with of ton of Bellingham musicians, it was a reunion of sorts, celebrating Jaco Pastorius and music. A magical evening, and the film had it right about so many things, a tragic story, but so well done.
YES! I didn't get a chance to preorder but I hope I can still buy the DVD after the 27. The phone convo with Jaco and his Dad was moving. I'm so happy that this has finally been made to help show the world this amazing stuff Jaco gave us all.
I'm going to have to watch this as a double feature along with Standing in the Shadows of Motown. So glad a Jaco documentary was finally made!
So happy to see they got Jonas Hellborg to be in this. Someone like him is usually overlooked in these types of projects.
I once had a badass cat name Jaco Catstorius
Best comment here! 😂
r/mademesmile
Could’ve named him Gato Pastorius (Gato is Spanish for cat)
The end had me teared up.
+Rochelle Turner It got to me too; great trailer reminding me of how special this dude actually was; he was the sheeeeit!
+matt jenks I am unipolar.
+matt jenks They keep trying to tell me I'm bipolar, but I dunno if I accept that. I'm of two minds about it.
+Rochelle Turner
Kinda scares to watch it as I know I will have tears at the end for sure......
***** Only one of me can. The other one is out of luck.
I preordered this DVD about 8 weeks before its DVD release date. I was surprised to see it in my mailbox the day it was released on blu-Ray (around Nov 27th). In fact I had actually forgotten I ordered it. Really great intimate story line of his life. Very intriguing documentary.Lots of fantastic commentary from some of greatest bassist on earth. Highly recommend!
Robert is a real bass lover and a great musician. That's something who makes me like him automatically.
Thank you Mr. Trujillo for your vision and ability to execute this important contribution to music and film. Congrats to everyone involved. I would love someday to see a narrative film made about this lovely, complex and enormously gifted artist musician.
Can't wait to see it, but I know it's going to make me cry. I was there the night Jaco and Joni played onstage for the first time together in Sacramento Nov. 1976, never heard of him before, but I fell in love with him that night. He had that effect on people, what a beautiful soul, what a sad ending he had.
Jaco's legacy is that of passion and he is a virtuoso, but virtuosity only appeals to musicians, and it's sad yet glorious that he kept his music pure, what is sad is the contribution he made to so many musicians and bands and when he needed help, when he needed a gig, when he needed anything, they turned their back on him...but that's the nature of the beast...
For anyone not aware, Trujillo and Flea are both on the Maron podcast WTF: #656 from November 19 promoting this movie and discussing other interesting things.
Thanks for the PSA! I'm gonna go check that out
***** I do love people that pray at the church of the Sub-Genius.
Thanks for that, checking it out tomorrow
I can;t wait to own this!!! It looks fantastic
Can't wait to see this. Thank you Rob Trujillo for putting this together. Damn I'd love to be at the premier. Sounds like an amazing night. I saw Felix two years ago do a late night set at the maple leaf in Nola during Jazzfest. Him, Jeff Coffin, And the great Johnny Vidacovich..check Johnny V if you're not familiar. Felix was freaking incredible. His tone and phrasing reminded me so much of Jaco. This is easily one of the most important documentaries ever in music.
I'm so glad this has been made, can't wait to see it.
So good. Golden yrs of music, the best times. Thx for this.
Awesome! Just bought my blue ray copy. Cant wait to watch this.
That ending got the tears creeping. RIP JP
Can't wait to see this. Jaco Pastorius was incredible.
I don´t understand the "dislikes" for this amazing extraordinary musican!
There's dislikes on everything
Jealous fake bassplayers
He became a nusance in some cases localy around the clubs in SE Florida. He was revered but his problem became over the top in many cases. Trust me, Im a huge Jaco fan. Ive been to his post death birthday partys in Ft Lauderdale. Ive drank with his wife (RIP). Many friends gigged with him as far away as Uruguay. He became a problem to his self. Im only repying to your question why the dislikes. This may be why. There will never be another Jaco!!!!!
It's a meaningless quantity of dislikes, can be anything. Even accidentally a person hits the button, sometimes without even checking the film or anything. Perhaps a bad mood... Just nothing to be taken into consideration
Happy Birthday Jaco !
Very well made documentary - I really enjoyed watching it and learning about Jaco and his amazing music. Well done guys!
Cant wait. Come on!!!
Just ordered, so excited. Jaco lives on!
Wow! Jaco was my hero when I took up fretless bass back in 1976 . I still play my WAL bass. I can't wait to see this!
Finally somebody is going to honor jaco ,can't wait to see what they say about portrait of tracy one of his finest. And yes him with his dad over the phone almost got me in tears too.
Incredible, just had my first and to hear jacos speaking voice to his child is pretty intense considering I didn't grow up in his era but always greatly admired him.
"Crisis" I always thought is what was going thru Jaco's head in his last years...thoughts coming at you faster than you can sort out. I listen to him just about every day still...
Yes Jaco !! wonderful job Robert !!! def will see this !!!
Greatest electric bass ever!
Finally! I've been waiting so long to see this Jacomentary! :)
alright Robert Trujillo!thank you so much!
I can't wait. Excited.
Dude was on fire. Saw him at Knnedy center, effing solo, out of his mind awesome. Perhaps some candles burn faster.
Shooting stars...
CAN'T WAIT
I love Jaco!!
Def got to get this treasure. RIP Jaco.
Goosebumps!!
Oh my lord. So excited for this.
Bought it (pre-ordered before release). Watched and listened to it a few times, now. You need to buy this. It's right up there with "Standing in the Shadows".
Finally a documentary about the most underrated bassist ever. I will watch it!
Patrik Gabrielsson underrated, really? When anyone discusses bass playing, not to talk about this phenomenal musician is like not discussing an elephant in the corner of a room
Awesome movie. Watching it was so inspiring, yet so tragic. Good Lord, I miss Jaco.
yes yes yes! So excited!
still...can't....wait... really really hope PLEDGE MUSIC has my correct address
I saw Jaco at commencement hall @ U of T in I believe 1978.
He was good. Awesome really.
Barfed back stage while the mic’s where running.
Didn’t disappoint
Wow, great trailer, great vibe. Flashes of the brilliant art that music can be.
Bought the Blu-ray, it's done very well. Big fan for years.
I saw Jaco play with Weather Report from only a few rows back. I remember it like it was yesterday. He was amazing. I had no idea there was a documentary. Be watching for that.
Arrepiado só de pensar !! chega logo!!!!
I can't wait to see this!
It looks like they did a really excellent job with this. I can't wait!
this man could have played successfully every existing instrument. i'm very thankful he choosed the electric bass, if i'm still playing today i owe it to him. Love You Jaco
Breathtaking and monumental.
Been looking forward to this for a long time. Very excited!
A friend of mine is a Jazz musician and he was ranting about "Why did a METAL guy produce this?"
And I was going "Dude, be glad SOMEBODY produced it!"
FINALLY! CAN'T WAIT
Another genius who sadly departed our world too soon. Let us take pleasure from the gifts he left us.........
- K. Feragen
YES!
I had the great fortune to see Weather Report with Jaco at the Hollywood Bowl in 1981, and it was Beautiful, Powerful. And then just a few years later... 1983 in Santa Cruz - his own band... he was bloated, drunk, and sloppy! - it was horrendous, and so sad! I revere Jaco through his recordings, starting with Pat Metheny (Bright Size Life). Weather Report, and especially Joni Mitchell - "Hejira", "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" , and "Mingus". Jaco Pastorius lives FOREVER in these great records!
Great respect to Robert
WHEN WHEN WHEN! I CAN'T WAIT....COME ON!!!
