And have put it to a spectacular end. The result it just breathtaking and the art collection deserves a video of its own. I just sat watching, stunned, and shaking my head. What a way to go into your retirement years. Maybe they'll adopt me? Or, maybe I can at least visit...
@@arthurdick9553 I didn't think about that. My gosh, that could be several million dollars!!! I had some new steps installed with columns and lighting, and will be paying on that for a couple of years.
Just stunning ... absolute precision from the architectural design to the final decor and personal touches ... it's my hope that there is a plan to preserve the many historical relics in the owners' art collection once they pass on.
Interesting that she does her own washing and hangs it around the place inside. I've done that before in one place we lived - up and down the banisters. It would be better just to have a maid or two.
Thanks, I really appreciate your videos, I'm always so desperate for the next video to come out. These houses must take so much effort to make, but they're defiantly worth it!
To be honest, I'm just so satisfied and I just desperately love watching these videos. I just find these videos so interesting! But seriously, I'm just literally so amazed. 🤤
They don't need the space, but they love space and the space. It is a type of an art gallery, museum too for primitive art etc (which I have no love of) but I do love the house. I love the views out and the geometrical play.
In my experience, whenever I see houses with odd angles/geometry is more to showcase the architects hability. The interiors and views are great but the new wing doesn’t really dialogue with the old part of the house.
I agree and I don’t. The old form couldn’t deliver what the owners sought. Surprisingly, the house delivers on its interior flow. It is like 2 different era homes adjoined, however. Somehow it works. I love the dry stone wall. Probably cost as much as the house.
@@anamaria2053 Hey Ana! I like what you say "I agree and I don´t" hahaha. Still, I feel like those two adjoined era houses don´t communicate with each other. They are just sitting together. They could have kept some elements (just something) from the old era... what´s the point of keeping the old construction? that´s a good question for the architect =)
The interior is stunning and they have VERY good taste in Art. I absolutely love all the off angles, brilliant! Still, the idea of just two people building a home with this amount of space is kind of staggering. The exterior of the old and the new structures share no common visual vocabulary; so I can’t help but view them as entirely separate structures and not as an integrated whole home.
Yes. Great taste in the interior. Lots if natural light. Terrific walled garden. I agree the house and the extension are unbalanced, in a nice way but still unbalanced.
Im no expert, no stuff all about design, but this house just works, Respect the old, while welcoming the new, Theres something special from front on shot, very rare can you get old/new flowing., beautiful, I can see why it won.
Just amazing 😮 Though I am not a fan of the white walls, which there are a lot in the house. But other than that, almost everything comes together so good. And it still looks like people are actually living in this house.
Bravo Matt Brooker, hope ur arms survive the stonechiseling, great architect. Would normally not be attractif to such project, but here it seems she pulled it off quite grandly. Never saw inside the Georgian? And at that age, any downstairs bedroom ?
I watch the mansions in America been bought and sold for millions upon millions or dollars and there is not one thing about them that I like they look like advertisements. Nothing is out of place and then you look at something like this and just go WOW. I have loved old houses all my life I do not like new builds for me my gran used to say when the time comes for you to want your own home visit numerous times but at different times of the day and then stand and listen to the walls they all tell a story there is life in those bricks new builds don't do that. This is an outstanding home and I am in love
The ultra modern add on would be beautiful its on, but the way the old house leads to the new is a little confusing to the eye. Two completely different buildings butted together. I would have rather been shown through the old one.
There is mortar - you can see it on the outside. The interior just isn't pointed. It's pretend dry stone wall (which is needed as you can't build dry stone wall that straight and high).
I stayed in a house which looked exactly like this one on the inside: angles, useless corners everywhere, lots of glass, white walls and art pieces hanging everywhere. It was awful. Not one comfy spot in the whole place.
I believe I saw this housed used in a short british film about two burglers that attempt to steal artwork from the walls while the husband and wife are at home.
Over the years ive found that the "grand" in grand designs is misleading. They should call the show modern designs because that guy has went around for years promoting modern designs. One giant glass box after another and he is wowed by it. fair enough.
decadence in perfection … the space could accommodate up to 4 families. besides this, is it really a masterpiece in design? is a modern look and expensive materials enough?
I feel like architects talking about building design is the same as car companies talking about paint colours: “This blue sky fusion iridescent hue brings out the moving emotion of the double-layer rust flecked blah blah blah” etc etc
This isn't even the best combination of old house + extension they had on the list this year, let alone the best house they had short listed. Look for the other contestants and you can start to question the judgement of the jury.
there is something to be said for overthinking in academia these days...how they explain why they chose it as house of the year doesn't gel with the overall asethetic - the new does not gel with the old...it just looks silly
How in God's Name did that Facade get PASSED by Planning, so out of kilter with such an historic original building!? Also, from "life's experience" is such interior, angular "spaces", no real privacy, echoing conversations when multiple people are around and playing music especially, and a Soulless character. - Just saying. Like the idea of being "visually connected" to the outside, but that is omly during daylight iving.......
So really quite old people living in a massive monument to their egos. No happy with a georgian house, they build another 310 m2. It is quite interesting but again, the decison is made based on the money thrown at the building and not the level of innovation or any number of other critieria that are relevant today.
A beautiful house, with a monster mistake on its side. And what of the side, white walls and minimalism. A boring concept we now see EVERYTIME on programmes like this , that we are constantly told is "original". When it looks no different to the others featured. Yawwn .
They don't work together brilliantly... Sorry a job well done on the interior front I'm a hindu from India & I see a lot of Hindu artifacts there Garuda, Nandi, a lot of vintage/antique of Indian origin. Also I'm a huge fan of Stone houses ❤️ but exterior wise there's nothing but a complete visual disconnect between the magnificent old world charm original stone building & the new 310sqmt west wing.
Though I am an English teacher only ... not an expert but the new house on the left seems to spoil the character of the perfectly good estate... its out of place.. And even if it were a seperate building I would still choose the older one... We are not amused... I call "the emperor has no clothes" on this one....
Ridiculous for this ‘house’ to win. Such a mis-match, like wearing too odd socks on your feet. Hideous and insulting to the historic house that the new monstrosity adjoins.
That drystoned wall in the walled garden is an absolute piece of art. The Mason for that part of the project should be extremely proud of himself.
I imagine that wall alone cost more than my house! But it is indeed stunning!
It's weird they suggested the walls were constructed dry. The drystone is simply a veneer on a fully mortar-built wall.
The stonemason deserves all the praise, what a craftsman 👌🏻
A huge stone wall to block the view of the valley from the pool? Perfect!

This is very astonishing. Beautiful and magical architectural design. Well done.
The magic of this art work is architect made it before owners die. Truly amazing achievement!
Brilliant.. and I am sure they have a cleaning company keeping it spotless...
And Gardners and swimming pool cleaners.... 😂
If you have the money for the house and the architect, hopefully you have enough left for the upkeep. Don't forget the window washers...
Interesting that she does her own washing and hangs it around the place inside. I've done that before in one place we lived - up and down the banisters. It would be better just to have a maid or two.
Nope I deliver there most days , it’s a normal house that gets used. They definitely spruced it up for the video lol. Lovely couple.
i just love the stone wall.
Wow! Archi is so much expressed in this, fusion of old, present and future house. And more. So much to be inspired. Congrats.😉

That wall with the view out is stunning.. Framed
amazing home even better in person!
A beautiful building… I don’t understand why they need so much space but it’s a fabulous house. Great taste and design
It’s as they say, an affair of the rich
Space is a luxury so I can fully understand
Obviously for swingers parties & probably the reason for wall around pool
They don't need the space, but they love space and the space. It is a type of an art gallery, museum too for primitive art etc (which I have no love of) but I do love the house. I love the views out and the geometrical play.

The dry-stoned wall would look perfect on the exterior of the extension. The modern cladding will be outdated and unsightly in another 10 years.
Beautiful masterpiece. love all the geometry elements
it's awful

Kevin thank you for putting this up. Lovely home but I feel all these homes are too large. Too much cleaning.
That is old school thinking for a new school world.

Incredible, just a shame only 2 people live there :/
This is lavish and beautiful. I don't have a house but I'll never live here. I'll go for a simple abode yet comfy and with low maintenance.

Don’t understand this, if you want a modern structure why not buy a plot & build one rather than adding such a contrast to a period home.
