I was just listening to Nothing New and thought of this, hoping someone made an edit! I really do think Taylor wrote it back in 2012. There's similar ideas in The Lucky One, but this song is more deep, mentions drinking and Taylor doubting herself (two things which aren't mentioned often in her older work). Olivia just happens to fit the prophecy, but it's kind of wild knowing how their relationship is now.
I think her managers didn’t want her to ruin her image so songs involving more negative coping mechanisms weren’t included on old albums. I agree that Olivia just fit. I think Taylor said 17 because her career was taking flight and was full of hope.
I just made this connection... I think she did write this song back in 2012, but she must have added this bridge in 2021, when she released RED TV. Olivia put out Driver's License in January 2021; they met in May at the Brit Awards; and in November 2021, Taylor put out Nothing New... It's too much of a coincidence? Damm, what a bittersweet feeling Taylor must have felt with Olivia's rise...
I think she wrote the song originally back for Red and Olivia was the fulfillment of what Taylor foresaw as she herself was on the rise at 17. I think the idea is that the world hasn’t gotten to you yet at that age.
she wrote the song in 2012 but swapped it with The Lucky One which is a family friendly version of Nothing New
