Violently Happy Directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino. Written by Björk/Nellee Hooper, Published by Universal Music Publishing Ltd/ Warner Chappell Music Ltd. ® 1994 One Little Indian Records Ltd.
I don't think most people realize that Bjork was doing this type of music before Moby or anyone else. Sounds a lot like songs you hear in high end clubs today. Like Prince she's been a pioneer and doesn't get the credit for it.
U know what they say. If u wanna be recognized as a pioner, u need to be a master hidding ur influences. Is easy to hide Bjork as an influence, because all those artist start to imitate her sooooo long after she gives that firts step.
Nothing pioneering about this, people who know their electronic music history know these beats where already about 8 years old by the time she made this. I also think Bjork was really just a less talented version of Kate Bush, who literally was years ahead of her.
It was late night sometime in 1994, I couldn't sleep and turned on the TV on MTV. And on this moment came this video and makes me speechless. Than I couldn't sleep anymore because it scares me a bit, but in a good way :)
"Violently Happy" since i met you this small town hasn't got room for my big feelings violently happy 'cause i love you violently happy but you're not here violently happy come calm me down before i get into trouble i tip-toe down to the shore stand by the ocean make it roar at me and i roar back violently happy 'cause i love you violently happy but you're not here violently happy overemotional violently happy i'll get into trouble real soon if you don't get here baby violently happy 'cause i love you violently happy i'm aiming too high violently happy it will get me into trouble violently happy i'm driving my car too fast with ecstatic music on violently happy i'm getting too drunk violently happy i'm daring people to jump off roofs with me only you can calm me down i'm aiming too high soothe me Writer(s): Bjork Gudmundsdottir, Nellee Hooper album: "Debut" (1993)
I picked up The Sugarcubes CD Here Today, Tomorrow, Next Week in late '89 in the Navy. Then was on shore duty for a couple years and missed their final album. Had all but forgotten them until March of '94, when I walked into a music store in Palma de Mallorca and heard this playing on the speakers. Bought her Debut CD immediately. Absolutely love this song and her voice!
This was the very first video of her I ever saw. So new to me, that years later, after "discovering" her and while navigating her discography from latest to earliest and stumbed upon this, my mind exploded.
What should I say about Bjork? She is a fantastic, amazing, wonderful artist, full of talent. She is smart and unique! She is a songwriter, singer, has an unusual but excellent voice. Luckily I have ALL of your studio albums since Debut (1993), Post (1995), Homogenic (1997) and Vespertine (2001). Including the Greatest Hits (2002)! Bjork, honey, I have no more words to describe your talent, your artwork in general. You are unique and special. You are talented enough. You got your unique place, your Queen of Alternative Pop Music throne! Congratulations! You have a Portuguese fan who loves you with heart and soul! Best wishes my dear!
I fell in love with Bjork when she sang in The Sugarcubes. Then I realised she had an hatred for English tsbloid journalists and Heathrow airport. My love soared nto the stratosphere. I violently love you, my Icelandic geyser
Björk seems like she was having so much fun in her earlier career. Big Time Sensuality, Venus as a Boy, and this video are bubbling with energy. You really see the progression of her career to more somber albums like Vespertine, and more experimental albums like Utopia.
This describes the part when you are just realising your love for someone is unrequited but you are aggresively holding onto the thrill of your love for them when inside you know you're about to fall into a world of heartache.
I used to sing the chorus when I was 7 thinking she was saying "finally happy" until my mom got freaked out and corrected me on what she was really saying 😂😂
The choice seemed almost made: but there was this animated spirit that took the run, passed in front of everyone, and with a pirouette climbed over the back of the throne, ignoring the velvety steps, and sat down with a great smile of satisfaction. He took the crown placed on the cushion, weighed it and turned it in his hands, placing it sideways on his head, making the fruit arranged as a tribute a splashing juice on the presents with a single grab, looking defiantly, and laughing loudly
Wow, I just realized, this was the first video of Björk I've ever seen... I was around 10 years old, and LOVED it! I wonder now how comes that I didn't freak out back then... I assume I was always a bit ahead of my age ;)
I was looking for music videos that have Norman Reedus in them. I stumbled upon this one and it took me quite some time to realize that at 2:10 it's Norman and not a woman, I DIED laUGhInG
Bjork and Nellee Hooper wrote the song "Bedtime Story" for Madonna's album, "Bedtime Stories". If you didn't know, or couldn't tell, look no further than this song, which was released a little over a year before than the Madonna song. Bjork is an innovator, and a true artist, in every sense.
Ha ha, my aunt was the casting director at the time for the video production company assigned by One Little Indian Records and I showed her this and she said “OMG I had him and the others stay at my loft apartment after the video, he was assigned to Storm Model Agency in London”
Hate to break it to you but eccentricity isn't something bjork invented, and artists who adopt an unconventional or eccentric style are not copying her.
I hear in the background a flanged fx but can be also that acoustic round instrument with small pipes that Alisdair ( I think was his name) was playing with the violin bow at your unplugged in NY...sounds pretty much the same.. I dont know the name of that instrument but I liked the sound very much.. I like to play around with sounds and fx.. takk atur
Damn this is so awesome, and I'm seeing it for the first time. I don't care if people say she's on acid or crazy. I don't believe the acid bit, but I can believe the crazy bit (But in a good way! I find normal people extremely boring, and Bjork is boring in no form!)
I am so sorry. If you really are that happy, then I'll leave you to it. I am just ridiculously happy now. I thought I was the happiest person on the planet last week. I considered what had been done to my brain, and compared the state to previous experiences, and logically deduced that greater happiness was not possible without stretching boundaries. I have now stretched those boundaries, and I cannot believe how happy I am now. I am pretty certain that you are not meant to achieve the full state before you find me, but if I am wrong, and you have done so, then I am utterly sorry that I've bothered you. I doubt I'll be able to let it rest though. I did promise Lilith and Persephone, so when I come down from this height, I'll probably be just as annoying as ever, but in my defence, this is what the Hermes archetype is supposed to do.
I was checking out IMBD...any idea what ever happened to Clay Elkins-Barrantes? He’s the other patient in the video with Norman Reedus. Dude was/is hot AF? Just curious.
@mgrealdeals Yes and that is why you still visit her song written in 1993 (18years ago). If Bjork wasnt great, then why are people still listening to her and why do her songs still look so modern? Bjork was way a head her time and had great influence on lots of artists. Mentally lacking? Thanks? But maybe i know that i am mentally not perfect; were as you believe you are mister Perfect and everybody loves you.
@wyskasses I was kind of a party monster back in the day. This song played at many fucked up parties I went to. This song was kind of anthem for scenesters back in the day, at least in Montreal.

this song was made in 1994 , Moby did Go in 1991, know your music history
Nothing pioneering about this, people who know their electronic music history know these beats where already about 8 years old by the time she made this. I also think Bjork was really just a less talented version of Kate Bush, who literally was years ahead of her.
Dude electronica and house music are way older than Bjork
Jamie Anderson Kate Bush is amazing but Bjork is no less talented. She’s one of a kind, not a version of any other artists.
It was late night sometime in 1994,
I couldn't sleep and turned on the TV on MTV.
And on this moment came this video and makes me speechless.
Than I couldn't sleep anymore because it scares me a bit, but in a good way :)
This may have been the song that made me fall in love with Bjork
Mtv was at it's best in 1994. As a 10 year old many videos used to creep me, at the same time they looked fascinating too.
"Violently Happy"
since i met you
this small town hasn't got room
for my big feelings
violently happy
'cause i love you
violently happy
but you're not here
violently happy
come calm me down
before i get into trouble
i tip-toe down to the shore
stand by the ocean
make it roar at me
and i roar back
violently happy
'cause i love you
violently happy
but you're not here
violently happy
overemotional
violently happy
i'll get into trouble
real soon
if you don't get here
baby
violently happy
'cause i love you
violently happy
i'm aiming too high
violently happy
it will get me into trouble
violently happy
i'm driving my car
too fast
with ecstatic music on
violently happy
i'm getting too drunk
violently happy
i'm daring people
to jump off roofs with me
only you
can calm me down
i'm aiming too high
soothe me

Bjôrk Is so avant-garde ! She truly is a genius

I really like the beat of this song.
I played a metal version of this song years ago matching the ending with a Chuck Moseley's song. It sounded pretty good!
Put the link for God's sake!
Me too!
This was the very first video of her I ever saw. So new to me, that years later, after "discovering" her and while navigating her discography from latest to earliest and stumbed upon this, my mind exploded.

Blast from my past...i was 14 when i did this video, bjork was very nice. True story
I used to believe björk was way too crazy and her songs were bad before even knowing her and her discography. I was so wrong. Now she's my model.
Another mindblower. She's a force of nature.
Ha! I just told someone I was certain Lady Gaga stole her style from Bjork and turned it into commercial garbage!
Spot on friend, spot on.
The Lady Gaga of the 90s only better lol
Hate to break it to you but eccentricity isn't something bjork invented, and artists who adopt an unconventional or eccentric style are not copying her.
They are two completely different artists.
so she also stole norman reedus lmao
Me encanta mucho está rola! I'm always dancing to this song.
Björk's face should be next to iconic in every dictionary.
She's amazing. ✨
Lol, she always charms the pants off me, great album 😁👍
Grande, grandiosa rola que me recuerda los raves en la Ciudad de México, pura música de calidad con Björk.
