A great band. But for all the brilliance of the band without Martin Turners terrific bass it probably would not have worked. First heard this about 78 and no I did not see the change coming at the halfway mark! Seen Martin a few times in recent years and he still has all those skills!
To be honest I bought this the year it came out. If my memory doesn't betray me it was voted album of the year in Sounds... a UK music paper. Like all classic tracks this one became my favourite from the album. People now, won't understand that. When you bought an album you listened to every song, even if it didn't hit the spot right away. Saw Ash over 6 times in the 70's and 80's. Still my favourite band and the were in august company in their time.
WISHBONE ASH.....a great, greeeeat, greatttttttt underestimated prog-rock band !!.....ARGUS - 1972 - and LIVE DATES - 1973 -.....two true masterpieces !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!..... big hugs to the two of you Grey Beard and Harri for this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i so much enjoyed watching your reaction to this. Wishbone Ash is my 2nd favorite rock band of all time, & this album is possibly their best album. every track on it is fantastic. i got this when it was new, & it has yet to get old. thx for appreciating it. you make an old man feel good
Wishbone Ash weren't on my radar at all until me and my girlfriend went to see them at Portsmouth Guildhall in 1972 or 73 purely on a whim. They were outstanding and Argus still gets a regular listen.
@@kevinmulrooney3353 One other standout I saw there was Leo Sayer (my girlfriend was a fan) with Mud as support, probably '74. Mud were outstanding, one of the funnest performances I've ever seen.
You have a diverse and great taste for music, Greybeard, and this one by Wishbone Ash is no different. Great selection and reaction, too. Thanks fellas!
This song brought tears to my 67 year old self, remembering the first time I heard this album and song over at a friends neighbors house when I was a 16 year old kid. Memories I can never forget when they are connected to life changing moments when I heard this album.
I was in England in the 70's. Took a trip into London to a record store. I bought Wishbone Ash Argus and Pilgrimage. Wishbone Ash is one of the best bands of their time and still to this day. Sometime World is phenomenal and feeds my soul. It's hard to describe how it completely takes me over.
That is a great album and this is a wicked good song but the other side is pure gold and their finest hour: The King Will Come, Leaf and Stream, Warrior and Throw Down the Sword is one of the best sides of music by anyone and just flows perfectly together, I highly recommend it to anyone who loves 70s rock and great twin guitar leads in amazing, melodic but bangers that will surprise anyone who takes a chance. Back when this came out we were constantly playing the side above, Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎸🎶
Wow, this tune is a rollercoaster thru heaven! That bass player/bass line is genius. What a prelude/intro to start the ride. Don't know what else to stay.
Amazing you picked my very favorite WA song! This song has blown my mind for 50 years! ever since I first heard it when I was 16 years old. Love Wishbone Ash!!
The album Argus won the readers' poll in both Sounds and Melody Maker's albums of the year for 1972 - beating other worthy contenders such as David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, Deep Purple - Machine Head, Yes - Close to the Edge and Neil Young's Harvest. The rest of the album and the Live Dates album from 1973 are well worth investigating...
Wow, incredible music! Ive always loved this song and to watch your perceptive and enthusiastic reaction was wonderful. Ironic how the song references feeling underrated..i feel this band always where
If you open the album all the way, you'll see a flying saucer rising up out of the valley. Argus, loosely translated means sentry. I remember 4 of us, high, playing air guitar (I had a solo one my broom) in our dorm room, on a wintery night in Pullman, WA! Back in the day, there was AM radio, which dominated back then. This was clearly too long for. This song was the Food of FM stations. Who back then were hidden stations with secret songs. The vinyl record was in the stores, and nobody knew what to expect from it There was no clue on the cover. It wasn't till 1974 until I found someone who had a copy of it. Possibly the FM station I worked at in college. Became a staple that very moment. The English blues rock scene morphed into some of the most enjoyable music. These guys, the Original Fleetwood Mac, Jeff Beck, John Mayall and the Blues Breakers, Eric Clapton and Cream and even Jethro Tull, were all folk who bathed in American Blues and came out with something different and fun. I was great on the broomstick! By the way... .
Great to read David. This album has been part of my life since an older brother of a mate handed it to me and said “listen to this”. It’s a magnificent piece of work.
Fabulous reaction to a fabulously talented band. I was fortunate to see them play live several times in the 70s & they were always excellent . Pioneers of the twin guitar sound that would later be imitated by so many. Their guitars always had a beautiful clean crisp tone . So many great songs you could choose by them but I would recommend Errors of my Ways . Lady Jay based on an old English folk tale & the stunning Phoenix .Keep up the great work.
Wishbone Ash is becoming the most often band played in these analysis videos it seems to me, deservedly so IMO. The most underrated and appreciated bands of any era.
Please do yourself a favour and try some of the other tracks on the album. In particular I want to give a shoutout to "Throw down the Sword". The twin guitar solo in that is in my personal opinion one of the most beautiful things ever recorded.
One of the best Rock albums I know. I was 16 when I first saw them live heading the Open Air Festival in Offenburg, Germany with War, Alvin Lee, Three Dog Night and...Bob Marley and the Wailers (first gig in Europe).
Hi guys, don't you feel like we're listening to some ride of guitars chasing each other such as in "Free Bird" - Lynyrd Skynyrd 1973 or "Green Grass and High Tides" - The Outlaws 1975.....prog-rock vs. southern rock !!!!!.....Those were really incredible years for rock music, guys !!!
Thanks for that. I've been a fan of theirs since seeing them on 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' on BBC 2 as they promoted their first album from 1970! Whisperin' Bob Harris introduced them and that was me gone.... I've seen them at least 40 or 50 times, which given the time they've been going isn't that much really! Last time was earlier this year. You picked a great song to review as it is often overlooked on the Argus album, there being so many other great tracks on there. But Sometime World features one of Andy Powell's best solo's I feel. He can still pull them out when he wants to but for the last 20 years or so he has settled for more quality of notes than quantity. The music of the 'Ash' has been the soundtrack of my life and I never get tired of hearing it. Argus IS a 'timeless masterpiece'
Went to see them in Exeter Phoenix 29/9/23 just as brilliant as ever. Imagine hearing this live, give your ears a treat and listen to the whole of Argus album. This isn't even the best track lol.
Glad you found this. In my humble opinion the most complete album ever made , no fillers, no bad tracks, every track on it is as you called it " A Timeless Masterpiece" ............now you need to listen to the rest of it. I bought this when it was 1st released, and still have it on regularly

' Before their time' is a cop out, all music was of it's time and we were there, every week another great album, great days that you weren't a part of because through no fault of your own you came late to the party. Now get into some Be-Bop Deluxe, start with Adventures In A Yorkshire Landscape, then Soundtrack, and Crying To The Sky, a track from their first three albums, magnificent band, second to none.
I bought "Argus" on the recommendation of a musician friend who I worked with. I was hooked! I saw them live every chance I got and bought everything I ever saw by them. There were other bands who used harmony lead guitars, but Wishbone Ash was one of the best, right up there with Derek and the Dominoes.

You probably won't see this comment but there is a band called Aphrodite's Child creating album called 666😢 which is the Book of Revelations put to music it has some awesome music on it one of the main composers was Vangelis papathanasiou Academy award-winning a score for Chariots of Fire I think. The song I would recommend is the Four Horsemen

While nearly all the songs are great, the two long ones on the 2nd side of the album, *"Handy" & "Phoenix"* are super special. I've enjoyed listening to them zillions of times because they were both so great. Check them out!
It's funny because if at the time I could've predicted which songs from Argus that would be most featured on these kind of videos it would have been Blowin' Free and Warrior. Sometime World deserves it though - seen a few other great reactions.
Back in 1973, when I was 16, this was the very first album I ever bought. 51 years later this album is still in my top 10 album list. Martin Turner's bass guitar solo is legendary as are the lead guitars 9f Andy Powell & Ted Turner (no relation).
