Couldn't it have been a commentary between the working class Carpenter and the bourgeoisie Walrus?
The start with day and night being confused, sounds like it is setting the stage for ideological philosophy.
The Walrus starts suggesting useless projects like sweeping all the sand off the beach and then the Carpenter complaining that it would never be done even "if seven maids with seven mops swept for half a year"
I wonder if it was even mocking specific heads of state who were contemporary to Carol.
It seems like it could be saying a lot more than just telling kids to stay away from strangers. It could suggest a cynical attitude toward the classes dialogues, it could imply something about Carols politics. Maybe the Oysters could also represent money, value or the exploitation of people.
At the end of the poem Alice says she liked the Walrus best- because he, at least, felt sorry for the Oysters and wept for them, but then the Tweedles explain that the reason the Walrus held up his handkerchief was to hide from the Carpenter, how many Oysters he'd taken. So Alice changes her mind and supposes that she likes the Carpenter best- if he didn't take as many Oysters. But the Tweedles tell her "He took as many as he could get though"
It ends with Alice saying "Well they were both *very* unpleasant characters."

It would be weird for the Oysters to represent the exploitation of people if the Carpenter represents the working class. Not to mention the Carpenter is a close assistant of the Walrus, rather than his opponent or someone who is also exploited by the Walrus (although he is tricked). Perhaps the Carpenter could represent working class leaders who side with the bosses, but I think it all gets a bit muddled going down that root. I wouldn't make sense for the Oysters to represent wealth or value either. Otherwise what would the older and wiser oyster represent? I think regardless of the different interpretations, the poem is clearly about deceit, and you can't really deceive wealth or value.
With that said, I definitely think the poem can be read as a political commentary. Rather than the Walrus and Carpenter representing two different classes, they arguably represent two sides of the same class. The Walrus would be the upper stratum of the bourgeoisie, who is more cunning but less practical. He is a fine orator even though his words are worthless, and has grand ideas about the way things ought to be (regarding the moon and the sun for example), but is idle and work shy (as revealed in the part about sweeping all the sand). He also weeps for the poor whilst he devours them, which is comparable to how politicians will constantly pay lip service to their own victims. The Carpenter represents the lower stratum, or the middle class (independent artisans would certainly be considered a part of the latter group). He's more pragmatic on the sand question, and even though he is fully in on the Walrus' scheme he is ultimately cheated by the Walrus as well. The Carpenter could also represent the Church, or to borrow a leaf from your book, the labour leaders who betray the working class - or really any group who assist the ruling class but ultimately get screwed by them in the end.

My analysis is about the original poem. I cut Disney's Alice in wonderland as a visual.

I used to re-enact the Disney version when going to Angie's Clams in Revere, MA. It's not there anymore, but does anybody remember that restaurant?

im sorry to ask , so the carpenter havent eaten any oyster?

    • @HablaConOwens
      @HablaConOwens  2 роки тому +8

It could be debated that he did but i say not likely.
The walrus had his fill of oaysters while the carpenter was still readying his toast.
Then the walrus expresses his remorse....next the carpenter calls for the oysters but hears nothing.
Also the walrus is made clear to be the smart one while the carpenter is made to look a little dumb.
My interpretation is at the walrus ate all the oysters and the carpenter got none.
      Good question!

Probably because God is literally everything and He’s real just as much as His Son is real! Just because you refuse to see it doesn’t mean it isn’t real and o I don’t follow organized religion because even they don’t fully follow what Jesus said in His Teachings anyways but there is in fact a God and he’s been since before the beginning of time so therefore He created everything so then He’s in everything! You hate God probably because of what a human person did to you under the guise of religion but if they’re going against it themselves then they’re not truly following it are they? And if that’s the case then they’re not really follow Him right? So don’t blame Him for how mankind seems to always put themselves in the same breath as Him when nobody can. All we can do is strive to be like Jesus, carrying our cross and dying to ourselves everyday and if you do live that life then yes you will be with Him in the afterlife. But don’t base God on what man says, look at it for yourself and actually see what Jesus said in red in the NT and you’ll see 95% of churches and clergy today go completely against what He said which is why I don’t go to church anymore but there is in fact a God dude and it’s for real but you also have your own free will choice to except or deny but don’t crap on someone else’s choice to believe in Him just because you possibly let a human get in the way of your possible eternity!
