Thank you so much! Since a recent Windows update I encountered the problem that i could no longer enter anything in explorer or windows search bars. I found that I would have to start ctfmon.exe manually but wondered why windows didn't do this any longer. Your explanation to solve this issue is ever so simple and concise, you made my day :)

Is not just the search function, but also using arrows for moving through photos in the photos app AND pausing videos in the videos app AND using your keyboard for literally anything inside ANY windows app. It's the most annoying thing that ever happened to me and I can't believe I just fixed it. The ammount of USELESS responses by microsoft's team that I had to read, the hours I spent meticulously picking my words so to maybe trigger the right search result. You ABSOLUTE madman I truly wish you the best year you can possibly have.

legendary man,
there is 100 tutorials out there about cortana, foulty windows updates, windows troubleshooting, netframwork issues etc... but not a single one of them mentioned the registry.

Awesome fix, this problem is awful, and was affecting all sorts of input bars and apps on my pc! Like Calculator, Apps/Features anything in windows that has a input bar basically. I had a Trojan that must have disabled/removed ctfmon.exe and this savces me from having to re-open it manually everytime i restarted.

Make sure AppX Deployment Service is not disabled before adding anything to the registry run key. I have no idea why this service is needed but setting the start type to Manual (Trigger Start) fixed it for me. Ctfmon is not listed in the registry run key on a fresh install which suggests to me any problems lie elsewhere.
