One of the pioneers of producing in Hip Hop. He was one of the masterminds behind the production of Illmatic.
I remember Melle Mel came to a club I was DJ'ing way back in the day (1989) called Hollywood Live in Hollywood, Cali. The crowd sorta shunned him in a way for being so called out dated, because groups like Kwame, KRS One, Guy, Al B Sure etc were top radio. Mel grabbed that mic and ask me do I know how to DJ for a MC of course I said yeah. He took mental control of everyone on that dance floor for around 45 minutes. These west coast flattop dancing, In Livin' Color Fly Girl dressing negative a-hole could believe their ears on how he keep them motivated on the dance floor. After that for years he would show up around 3 times a year and show out and walk out with a pocket full of cash. Never count a person style out over age than that of talent. You just might learn something. #mellemel #grandmasterflash #thefuriousfive #hollywood
Yep, me and Nas used to hang out in front of forty deuce to stick up foreigners for studio time. That was back in the late 80's early 90's though. Plus we used to do coke at studio 54 with Rick James and Eddie Murphy.
michael mantinaos I can say nas’ lyrics and substance made him not his beats. But if you look at Nas’ albums with dope beats you have to say Illmatic, It was written, Life is Good, Stillmatic, Nasir, God’s Son, I even like Iam- the beats were ahead of its time.
Nas wasn't scared to be different honestly. His problem was he tried to sell music that'd touch HIS soul(if you want to call that a problem)instead of trying to please everybody as opposed to the Jay Z's etc
Nas beats are terrible. Vlad is right. His beat selection ruins his albums. Stillmatic and especially Street Disciple are prime examples. Large P and DJ Premier should have done all of his albums
