Having had to check the time in a blackout, I discovered that the lid of a hunter can catch light and cast it on the face of the watch. Makes me wonder if that contributed to its popularity with the outdoors.
The half-hunter is definitely the style for me. Actually, I’m hoping for a pocket watch from my parents for Christmas. It’s in the style of half-hunter. Your videos have helped me so much
I only have one pocket watch which is a "skeletal" double hunter in silver and pewter with a movement that sounds and looks great. I have never needed another.
Looking for some advice: I got a nice vintage mechanical pocket watch from my grandad and have been winding it every day for 4 months so far. The habit is quite soothing. But I'm going on holiday in a few weeks and don't really want to take it with me to avoid ruining the metal with sun cream or sweat (it's a hot sunny place). Will it be ok for it to not get wound for 2 weeks?
I am an orchestra conductor and I really need to tell the time before and sometimes during my concert. And the most convenient option for me is a pocket watch! I can't bring a phone with me on stage. It's heavy, it's bulky, I turn it down before the performance and it stays in my dressing room. If I would wear a wrist watch, I had to take it down, because it's weight in my wrist is a burden. I don't wat it to drag too much of attention to my wrist either. So I settled down with a pocket watch. I wear a three piece suit so I don't need to button my coat, and the timepiece fits nicely in my jacket pocket. I prefer a small open face because there's nothing that can do damage to it and I place it in the pocket faced incide, towards me. I was quite impressed when I realised how much of attention to details was given in the past towards convenience.
I have two hunter pocket watches one black the other one is Sliver I'm hoping to get a office job at some point this year and I prefer a pocket watch because everytime that I everytime that I have a wrist watch on me I can get very anxious I will keep checking every single second to make sure that I'm not late
Thanks for the video! I'm considering buying an open face pocket watch by Dalvey. I am concerned about possible scratches in the waistcoat pocket, while the glass is mineral. Is it worth the purchase in that case, and risking the scratch? Thank you.
I'm looking to get my first mechanical picket watch & am attracted to the double hunter style. I like the idea of being able to see the movement at the back. I don't have a large budget, though, so any recommendations for say
Hello, could you please tell me what model that silver (chrome?) Royal London pocket watch is @4:30 as I simply must have one. Thanking you in advance.
I have couple questions, I need very high quality pocket watch. 1. which pocket watch is the best for everyday use antique or brand new? 2. what antique brand of pocket watch do you recommend? 3. what brand new brand of pocket watch do you recommend? thanks a lot.
There are lots of good pocket watches on the market- For everyday use I would suggest investing in a new pocket watch as compared to an antique. I have been very happy with both the look and performance of my (new) Charles Hubert time pieces and would highly recommend them. It is hard for me to recommend any specific antique time pieces because there are many; each offering something unique. And while antique watches can be of good quality, it can be difficult and expensive to maintain them. Also, I suggest investing in a mechanical (hand-wound) pocket watch rather then a quartz (battery operated) one. They look nicer and will last longer.
I have a hunter-style pocket watch James Micheal brand. I don't know much about brands BUT IM SURE AS HELL GONNA LEARN ABOUT POCKET WATCHES. FEEL ME WITH MORE KNOWLEDGE, MY FRIEND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
I am a modern man, with modern technology and modern throughs. But I have to, the fashion of this time is much more of my taste. Then I have a stable income, I will reorganise my wardrobe.
My first pocket watch was a hunter...I bought it to wear in my waist coat if my suit for a friends wedding. Someone broke in my car and stole that watch Haven't seen one like it since.
i own many pocket watches of full and half hunters and open. of them all my favourite is my 1889 2key john myers and co open face half hunter, suspended on a double albert with a 15 min, 30sec 1930s military stopwatch on the other end and watch keys in the center
Love your videos. Looking to get my first pocket watch to go with my first waist coat. Looking to spend under 150.... is there one you could recommend? Thanks
If you can’t afford a ball, Hamilton, Illinois or Rolex .... I’d recommend Gotham. Japanese quartz movements don’t go wrong. Great looking historical inspired pieces at historically low prices.
I know this is two years old, but just so people know, yes they can. Originally, watches were worn around the neck, then transferred to the wrist for women and the pocket for men. Then the world wars hit and the pocket watch got stuck to the wrist for easy use in the trenches. And it's been that way ever since.
The watch that has been in my family from very early in the 20th Century is an open face Railroad type. In addition to that watch (which I don't carry), I have two more mechanical watches, both open face Railroad style. For everyday, I carry a quartz movement multi function pocket watch, again with an open face. I have been involved in cross country horseback riding a good part of my life and I presently own and ride a "hunter" (a thoroughbred), but I never liked the "hunter" case. Only the open face is quickly glanced at making it easy to read on horseback. Just as important, the open face doesn't require a lot of fumbling to get it open when wearing riding gloves. The open face is slim enough to quickly come out of and back into a pocket for those times when the group might gallop off suddenly. It has always been my belief that the Hunter case was developed to protect the watch from the inevitable falls that occur while hunting, but today's hard crystal watches and steel cases are sufficiently rugged. Truth is though, while riding I usually wear a rugged, but inexpensive quartz wrist watch, all in plastic and carry a pocket watch when not riding.
Thank you for sharing your first hand experience with the different case styles- more so, your experience with a pocket watch while on horseback. And I agree that an open face, while perhaps less protected, would certainly be a more efficient timepiece for riding horseback. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing. That's quite a good reason to prefer watches that you can quickly take a glance at, and it's no surprise that people have made a window on old pocket watches because opening a case does seem a bit cumbersome. Makes one realize the practicality of wrist watches as well.
what if I want to wear a pocket watch on my shawl lapel tuxedo more specifically on the breast pocket I don't have a waist coat tuxedo I only have cumberbund how do I pull it off
Ashwini Amarnath -Glad you enjoyed it. Most of these pocket watches are from Charles Hubert, can be purchased on Amazon-see links in the video description- and start at about $100. USD.
Might I suggest a full hunter or a half-hunter. It seems formal enough, yet doesn't need a key to wind it up making a little more convenient. Personally, I'd go with the half-hunter.
Reading a clock is very simple the short hand is the hour hand that's what our it is the long hand is the minute hand you read it every number is equivalent to 5 minutes for the minute hand so you read it and it would be 5:15 as an example
I have gold SEWOR mechanical double half-hunter, a Mudder silver mechanical full hunter, a silver BOSHIYA quartz full hunter, and last but not least a closely based on Fullmetal Alchemist Edward Elric’s pocket watch.
So far I believe I prefer using my double half hunter particularly because I kinda don’t feel like showing my watches in public that I often check the time while keeping a watch concealed with my hand, which is tricky to do with a full hunter requiring to open the front cover, but with a half hunter I can still see the time even with the front cover closed. Plus being part double hunter I can also have it sitting upright in display as a miniature clock.
neat story you were a arborist hard work i used to shoe horses and carried a pocket watch couldnt wear wrist watch because of the type of work lifting horses feet and other issues of shoeing
In this age of mineral and sapphire glass I find a metal cover on the watch just as useless as I would see them on a wristwatch, actually more useless as the wristwatch is more exposed to bumps. If the purpose of the watch is to indicate the hour in a fast way, open face is the only logical solution for a new pocket watch. If one wants to play the character of a roaring twenties film (or earlier age) then yes, a hunter watch might be right.

If I want to spend $1000 on a pocket watch where would I go? What brand would I look at? I’m looking for something very very old. Very very nice. What’s better Roman numerals or actual numbers? I have three pocket watches right now. One works two don’t work. I got them from Familyb and saving them for years but now I want to buy a nice one, but I want to buy an old one. Please get back to me on this.
All of the above. I like them all.

I like the "Salesman" case. This was an open face on the front and the back so that a watch with a fancy movement could be shown off as well.
I recently purchased a 1924 18k open face Patek pocket watch. Honestly, I love them all.
im very happy people like you and me are still kickin!
That first half hunter was top shelf. I really like those big, bold Roman numerals.
Great video. I prefer the double hunter just because I often like to prop it on my desk as I work.
A great way to utilise the style and functionality of your pocket watch.
I love your video! That explains why as a child I had a case, but not the movement . Cool!

Open face! Love the old American rail road watches.
I prefer the open face watch because it weighs less and if you put it in your shirt pocket it does not look conspicuous by weighing the shirt down.
I do enjoy the clean lines and functionality of an open face watch case. Do you have a favourite open face watch that you like to wear?
Yes. The watch is marked 'Regent hills' which is probably a Chinese brand. It looks like a copy of a Hamilton pocket watch. It is well made.

Open-faced, for me. I carry an old Ball railroad chronometer as my daily timepiece.

How to revive old fashion of wearing pocket watches as nowadays wearing suits is fast disappearing
Can women/girls wear these too?
I know this is two years old, but just so people know, yes they can. Originally, watches were worn around the neck, then transferred to the wrist for women and the pocket for men.
