How Do You Wear a Pocket Watch? Where does the watch chain go?

The double chain is handy for antique watches that require a winding key. You keep the key on the second chain. When keys went away men started attaching accessories, such as a pen knife, match case, sealing signet, or perhaps a Stanhope.

I was in the military and wearing pocket watches is very much a thing whilst wearing mess dress, so I looked into it. The key thing that was said was the place it on the off hand pocket, the reason given being that you needed your dominant hand for writing down timings for orders/filling out timings on your fire plan etc..... or filling out your golf score card/signing your mess bill which ever was most pertinent at the time. I was also told that the double chain was reserved for field officers and above (rank of Major or higher) but I think that was just a local rule, not an official one

I like the Double-Albert chain, especially with the third middle chain for a decorative charm. Its a showman's peices undoubtedly.
But it can be utilitarian, that second chain gives you a place to attach your keys, so its not taking up space in the sporran.

As a bit of trivia and a comment on which side to wear a pocket watch, the small pocket on jeans on the right side just above the standard front pocket was originally called a watch pocket and was for storing pocket watches.

Welp, call me a rebel, I guess. I wear a leather motorcycling vest and plan to add a pocketwatch to my wardrobe. This type of vest typically has snaps instead of buttons, so a t-bar won't work. I'll be using a vest-length chain with a beltclip. 😁

It's Called a Prince Albert Fob Chain !!
Because you have a Full Albert and a Half Albert...in reference to the length of the Chain....The T Bar has nothing to do with the terminology of the Albert reference.....it is about the Chain itself

Most of the time I wear a wristlet. A precursor to the modern wristwatch and it’s a pocket watch attached to a leather strap. WW1 was the brake through for the wristwatch when the men realised it was more convenient to have a watch attached to the arm. By then the women already had used wristwatches for a 100 years.

A trick for your watch did not come with an Albert bar, and has a skeletal clip. you can turn the chain back on itself through the so the clip acts like a bar. the length issue should be able to be fixed with a pair of pliers. This is what I currently do because I would rather not spend $20 on my with I wear once or twice a month when that twenty could be spent on the hose I will wear once or twice a week come winter.

The pocket watch that I have has the long chain and clip for the belt. So when I wear it with my vest I run it through the button hole and stick the clip in the opposite pocket. Gives it the double loop look and hides the clip.

I keep my pocket watch in upper vest pocket (you don't even have it here). Why? Less vibrations from walking, running etc. Most vintage pocket watches have no shock protection systems.

I saw another, called a fulcrum albert chain, it has a weighted disc at one end of the chain with the T-bar a few links in. Do you put the disc through the vest hole, that stretches the chain totally vertical to avoid sagging, which can scratch the watch?

I have a "Tree of Life" center fob.
A second short chain with a clip is available for the non-watch (right) vest pocket for the watch key when I carry my circa 1885 Elgin Key Wind pocket watch. Not that I really need to carry the key. I am not in the field for an extended period. I can wind it once a day at home.

You can find some great chains for cheap on ebay. And sometimes you can carefully work a clip through a button hole. Though of course a T-bar is much easier
