    If one wants realism in a spy film, this is one of the best examples. 3 Days Of The Condor is another.

    An incredible film that really shows the depths to which humanity strives to ascend.

    Along with "Five Fingers'", with James Mason, "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" is one of the greatest spy films.

    Always great to hear Le Carre's views. As a fan I did an appreciation of this movie for my own channel and wish I had seen this first. Thanks for posting.

      I just saw it and really like it. I also recommended a DVD you might like that is 6 Cold War thrillers - one is a film where the late, great James Mason plays Smiley

      @@OskarWerner4ever Again, thanks for the info on the James Mason movie - I instantly ordered it from my library which thankfully has a copy. Also as a fan of Cyril Cusak I was very interested to hear Le Carre's opinion on his job playing Control. If you get to the Day of the Jackal vid on my channel I feature a short clip of Cusak as the gunsmith, a scene which everyone likes.

  • @garrison968
    @garrison968 10 років тому +6

    I agree that Cusack is excellent in the film.
    Beautifully underplayed. Werner was fine also. Especially in the trial scene.
    This is one of the very best spy films ever. And probably one of Ritt's best two films along with Norma Rae.

    • @OskarWerner4ever
      @OskarWerner4ever  9 років тому +4

      I agree. I am a huge Cusack fan. And now, his grandson (Sam Irons) is following in the family tradition.

  • @TroglodyteDiner

    As a boy, Cusack was a runner for the IRA during the Troubles. In a testimony to each of their diversity as actors, Cusack went on to play Grumio to Burton's Petrucchio in Zefferelli's Taming of the Shrew (which I believe Burton produced).
    I agree with le Carre that Rita Tushingham would have been a better choice.

    • @OskarWerner4ever
      @OskarWerner4ever  6 років тому +2

      Thanks for the great background info on Cusack. I knew he was involved with the IRA - but not more than that. I agree, too, about Rita Tushingham. Claire Bloom is a very good actress -- but she wasn't able to get across the blue collar roots her role called for. Although, Bloom and Burton had had an affair (long before this movie was made) and it was interesting to see the energy between them in this film. (apparently Liz kept an eye on both of them during filming)

      I totally agree about Rita Tushingham and would have loved to see her in the role. Claire Bloom had a history with Burton and an innate toughness which that poor character, a pawn in a terrible game, would have lacked.

    Best espionage film ever. I agree Cusack was excellent but he was not far better than everyone else. The cast was that good.

    brilliant film but the plot is so fiendishly complex and subtle, you have to watch it twice to fully understand its multiple layers

    "...cross-border masonry." A great metaphor for explaining the psychological foundations for opposing spies.

    I can't count how many times i have watched this video; i love to hear Le Carre describe the intricate webs of his work. To hear this overlaid on a film adaptation is even more interesting. I've always wanted to ask; where is this interview taken from? I would love to acquire it in it's entirety!

    • @shalashaskalives
      @shalashaskalives 3 роки тому +2

      Ah, to answer my own question, and for anyone to whom it is of interest; it's an interview from 2008, contained in the extras of the Criterion Collection remastering of the film. It also contains a BBC biography of Le Carré's life and writing.

    In the recruitment scenes, it's interesting to note how each handler is treated like dirt by their immediate superior.
    As Lemas is handed up the line, the treatment of each handler becomes worse and worse.
    Another charming aspect of communism and socialism.

    • @OskarWerner4ever
      @OskarWerner4ever  3 роки тому +2

      This is the spy world - not communism or socialism. Leamas was treated just as poorly as MI5 and his girlfriend was outright sacrificed

    Excellent point by Le Carre about Cusack's performance. One was once asked to sum up the Irish in one word. The word was malice. Hence Cusack's terrific turn as Control.

    I want to know where the dividing line is between Brits who use the place holder "as it were'' and those who don't.
    At what level of education do they start to use this condescending phrase?

      If you get the TCM channel on your cable, you can TIVO it when they show it this month. Also, you can get a used DVD on eBay for about #10.00 It's well worth having in any video collection. Thanks for watching.

      HisEternalDaughter I misspoke. It will be shown THIS month (February) as part of their Oscar line up. So, if you have a TIVO, you can get it commercial free from TCM.

    Cusack's mother was English, and he spent half his life in England, so he can't have hated the English that much.

    • @OskarWerner4ever

      I’m sure Le Carre wouldn’t have said it, if Cusack hadn’t given him that impression. Who knows what anyone really thinks or feels? But clearly, Cusack conveyed that message to Le Carre.

    sure any other actor made as much of an impression.

    Or Carre was destroyed and made by his father, who was an incorrigible crook.
