Yes! We are completely lost in the "misinformation age". My goodness I have so enjoyed reading and watching these many novels. Smiley is an amazing creation. Thank you David.
As a person who was employed in security and intelligence, le carre displays how this world is made up of ordinary people, not James Bond at all, it's a tedious professional with no celebration or friends outside of the service
The heavy background music ruined it for me. I almost couldn’t hear the reader. UA-camrs are generally bad with background music and should stop trying to use it. Write content you don’t have to cover up.
Being in the right place is not enough to write an excellent book. Millions of people witnessed the same historic event as John le Carré. But no one has written anything fictional so memorable about that troubled reality in which a shadow world of a few shapes history and hides under the sunny world in which everyone else lives. Carré was in the "right mental and emotional state" when he wrote the book, and that's what made the difference.
This was very well done 👍👍❤️. For Uber fans of the man, the 2023 documentary The Pigeon Tunnel is truly an excellent biography of this legendary author.
I just finished the recent collection of his letters, which was edited by his son Tim, who died shortly after finishing it. If you love Le Carre, do read it.
Got the book this morning and have just started reading. Letter writing is a lost art, i wonder if authors continue to write such letters today to their friends? The future may be collection of emails, whatsapp/instagram posts & emojis instead of published letters.
@@Mork2001 I fear that Le Carre was the last of his kind in so many ways. It takes dedication and discipline to commit to pen and ink, or even typewriter, these days when electronic is so easy. Enjoy.
As a young boy, he heard snippets of whispers, that his father family came Cork, Ireland. A few weeks before his death, he and his son traveled to Cork to discover that the whimpers were true. He applied passport, and received it.
I was a schoolkid when Smileys people was on telly. I didn't understand it but the mysterious melancholy music, and the mystery intrigued me. I even had the bbc LP of the music. I've read a lot of this guy's novels and his reminiscences. The supposed inspiration for Smiley was John Binggham and I read a biography of him. Binghams wife hated Le Carre, and a lot of the spooks hated him. I now think he had a very jaundiced view of, well, the spooks. I actually think he might have been an enemy of the uk. But I did like his books, they are so well written, the characterization, is so good, I liked his books but they never have a happy ending, right or wrong, they criticize the uk's security services a lot, in my impression.
Super irritating music. Like the DJ at the wedding, who insists on turning up the volume, three minutes after he has been repeatedly requested to turn down it down. Le Carre does not need dramatic music to be dramatic
He talks about the colonialism and the fear and loathing left behind in the colonies. I am in francophone Africa with the insiders like him only French. I can tell you that the French have left so much worse behind. My mother in law looked at episode 1 of Vietnam War documentary about the French involvement. She said it was EXACTLY the same in Her country.
As a kid, i couldn’t read his books nor watch the various tv shows/movies based on his books. Recently, however, I started watching and being so enthralled. Bond has his place, but i can empathize with Smiley better.
If you talk..translate over a person speaking German or Russian the original speaker should be muted..or use subtitles...otherwise it is hard to follow

John le Carre was a great writer whose distrust of the 'establishment' was entirely obvious from his books. Strangely enough, though, in his interviews he reminds me as much of people like Philby, Blake and Peter Wright (Spycatcher) in that you can't believe a word they say.
They don't like him because he reveals the dark side of intelligence work? Is there a good side, when there''s always going to be a loser when you play that game?

At ua-cam.com/video/Jx9Jc32xZfc/v-deo.html David Cornwell (John Le Carre) gave an insight into decency. It seems all his life he dealt with a dichotomy that mostly avoided that situation. Complexity, when reduced in a deceptive world as one side of binary experience seeks, eventually to find where clashing ideologies can meet and hopefully be resolved. Near the end he makes a comment about morality, which conditions peoples beliefs and actions. In the same breath wisdom is mentioned. And, that is acquired and bestowed after much life has been lived. Especially a life like David Cornwell's as is evident in this documentary.

How does the electorate get around the dilemma of the fact that it is the most intelligent decision to elect the most intelligent and educated to lead us, and our security systems, but those are the very people most qualified and likely to be corrupt people who know how to corrupt the system and corruptly lead without consequences?
