The Ancient Weapon Used By Charlemagne, Held By Napoleon, & Stolen By Hitler: The Spear of Destiny

- Among the most powerful relics of Christian history, the fabled Spear of Destiny is one of the most prized and sought-after. From its origin in the fabled tale of a Roman soldier piercing the side of Jesus Christ to the myth of the spear granting world-conquering invincibility to its owner, the legends surrounding the Spear of Destiny have been obsessed over by many. Even infamous leaders like Napoleon were known to be deeply fascinated by the spear and its powers, wishing to possess it at all costs.
But what is the truth behind this fascinating legend? And why do four different versions of the spear exist?
In the Gospel of John, Jesus was arrested by Roman authorities, tried, and sentenced to death by crucifixion, which involved nailing a person to a cross and leaving them to die slowly. As Jesus hung on the cross, the soldiers guarding him planned to break his legs to hasten death. This would allow his followers to bury him before the Sabbath began and they were prohibited from manual labor including burials.
Jesus, however, already appeared to be dead. To confirm, one of the Roman soldiers, later identified as Longinus, used his lance to pierce the side of Jesus as he hung on the cross causing a miraculous mix of blood and water to flow from his body. Some accounts suggest that Longinus was blind and that some of the blood and water from the wound splashed onto his eyes, restoring his sight and leading to his conversion to Christianity.
Jesus was removed from the cross and entombed, but what happened to the spear used by Longinus? The Bible makes no further mention of the spear, though interest in the spear and other Christian relics begins to grow as the Church expands and becomes a geopolitical force.
This renewed interest ultimately gives rise to four main contenders claiming to be the true lance that pierced the side of Jesus, each with fascinating tales and powers assigned to them. As the legends of each grew, the lance came to be known as The Holy Lance the Spear of Destiny, or the Holy Spear...
The Vienna spear has been studied and dated to no later than the 8th century AD, thus making it’s claim to be the actual spear invalid.
where your research falls short is that your missing the fact that the spear was reforged around then. This was done by people like you who want to control the historical information for their own ignorant agenda. Sucks to be you
It’s highly unlikely to have Jesus’s real blood considering there’s no actual historical evidence of him ever existing
Studied by the atheist 😂😂😂
Keanu in the movie Constantine was a good watch.
Roman soldier: okay I think this guy is dead, let me just check with my boring, average, everyday spear that every other soldier has. I hope this doesn’t cause any problems in the future.
Everyone else: its a holy relic now! I deserve it!
🤣
One man's trash is another man's treasure, that's for sure.
Every picture I have seen depicts it as anything but boring and the last spear a soldier would use to stab things...
The ancient equivalent of poke it with a stick to see if it's dead.
No way this is authentic
Longinus likly was carrying a common pillum, a throwing spear with a wooden shaft tipped by a along iron rod with a spear point at the front end. Designed to be thrown and on impact bend such that the unfortunate foe hit with it could not easily dislodge it. Light and handy it would have been a great personal defense weapon to carry on duty for a Legionaire present at a public execution much like an M4 or AK would be toted today, or an MP40 or STEN during WW2. Whatever happened to it after the Crucifixion would be however Ancient and Medieval discarded armor and weapons would have been recycled. Maybe its part of an engine block, wrench, or skyscraper pillar by this time.
This is the most sane opinion I've seen so far and also happens to be my own.
Just like with the stories of the holy grail that you hear, that spear wouldn't have been anything special. Every other soldier there had one just like it, and it's very unlikely anyone kept that particular spearhead as a relic. Claiming to have holy relics and enshrining these objects in cathedrals was more about power and convincing people you deserved that power.
@@jackb.nimble826 The Romans were tossing thousands of those things around for Centuries.
True. At the time I would think that to the Romans, Jesus was just a guy being executed. The spear would've continued its life as the weapon it was intended to be. Maybe ended up in someone and buried, discarded or eventually recycled to something else.
@@cylon1983 I'd like to think it still exists as something useful, perhaps a K Bar on a serviceman's hip. or a gun barrel in a 1911 sidearm. Maybe just rusted away in discarded junk about 2000 years ago or became a hammer or shovel.
Unless the Roman legionary was a Triarii - in which case he would have carried a Hasta (a broad bladed spear). Triarii were the last line of defence in a Roman assault unit.
If you want to read a fictitious version of the lance read the Barry Sadler series 'Casca: The Eternal Mercenary' follows Longinus as he is cursed by Jesus to live eternally until Jesus returns. The series follows his life over 2,000 years during major events in history.
Longinus wasn't cursed, when he pierced Jesus, water and blood droped on him and cleared him from his sins, and he than saw who actually was Jesus, and later he became saint, at least he is saint in our church (orthodox), he make many pagans into christians, this is the first time that i red that Longinus was actually cursed.
...as you are so shall you remain. Until we meet again.
Isn’t that just the Wndering Jew story?
It's a good book
@@miloscarapic4502 you do realize he is referencing a fictional book right similar to the Bible you read
Pretty amazing that this holy "super" weapon was so powerful that everyone who supposedly had it failed and died.
I truly love all your content! Thanks for all the work you put in to each video 😊
Always a better day when I see you posting ^^
That is not the spearhead of a common Roman soldier. You would have tremendous difficulty identifying the soldier, much less the spear. A week later, the soldier himself might have had no idea which spear he had drawn from the armory that day.
Keep up the great work!
It turns out the real spear of destiny was the friendships we made along the way.
Yiyo yiyo

Lmao🤣
I thought spear of destiny was the Wolfenstein sequel...
Mr Dark5 dont ever stop with your channels they are my absolute favourite
Awesome vid, would love to know more about holy relics lost and forgotten
Not sure where it was recorded that Longinus was blind. This video is the first time I have ever heard this version of the tale. But, think about it. A blind Roman soldier? If he was blind, how could he have known where to thrust the spear? Why would a Roman cohort keep a blind man on active duty? As a guard? That makes no sense.
The Viennese spear allegedly had one of the nails used to crucify Jesus embedded in it? Obviously, this would have to have been a later alteration to the spear because the nails were still holding the body to the cross when it was used to pierce his side. That makes no sense, either. Also, the Nazis didn't invade Austria in 1938. The Nazis annexed Austria in a move called "The Anschluss." They simply declared Austria was part of Germany. It was a political move, not a military one.
Personally, I don't trust any story regarding any "holy relic." They all seem to come from hundreds, even thousands, of years after the fact. They are all tales constructed by those in power to keep or increase their hold on the ignorant folks over whom they rule. I am not so easily intimidated.
Have you ever seen "Robin Hood: Men in Tights?" There is a scene where a blind man in on guard duty. He is asked what he is doing and says "I'm guessing? I'm guessing no one is coming?"
Also the Romans - Pontius Pilate washed his hands of Jesus letting the Jews decide his fate, and the Jews wanted him crucified so the Romans crucified him.
yeah man stick it to em! cheers from iraq.
And they wouldn’t have kept the spear as a keep sake as Jesus was considered a martyr and a nobody. He would have been looked on as a common person just as any of the others being crucified at that time albeit he was probably considered crazy for speaking out agains the status quo. And to say it again, why would any military keep a blind soldier? That makes zero sense.
Maybe he was just legally blind and couldn't operate a chariot
when i hear the word The Spear of Destiny i think in wolfenstein
Yup
Love this channel so much. I love all of their channels!
First view first like love your content man
I know this is out on a limb here, but I had a thought.
So many famous items have gone missing over time. I honestly wonder if sometime in the future someone hasn’t invented a Time Machine and gone back and collected items BEFORE history loses track of them.
Wars and other times of upheaval would be perfect times to pop back too and snap up an item, or swap it for a fake.
Just a thought.
Good video.
you should ask yourself why would anyone invent a time machine in the future if it has not already been invented in the past
It would have to be invented long ago for people to be able to travel no further past the point it was invented or it would never work like people can't travel back to th3 dinosaurs but if it was invented let's say in 1999 could only go back as far as 1999 and not 1998
@@jBurNaa What exactly is your reasoning for that? Who's physics are you quoting? Since one hasn't been invented (we are aware of) then how would you know how it works?
Love these videos! Now like this!
Excellent video.
Well done
Ah, the spear of Casca Longinus. Barry Sadler, of "Ballad of the Green Berets" fame, in later life, wrote a cool series of books about Longinus, cursed to be a soldier forever, fighting in wars throughout history. He himself died while fighting as a mercenary in Afghanistan, back in the 90s, though I think his death was in a bar fight. Quiz next week. Peace.
He died after being shot in the head leaving a bar in Guatemala City.
His son Captain Thor P. Sadler, was my CO in US Army basic training, 1997 Ft Jackson, SC.
“And why do 4 additional versions exist” I haven’t watched the video yet, but my guess is- Two spares, a display model, and one for the kids to play with. Okay- on to watch and confirm this!
Im surprised they never used this artifact as the mcguffin in an Indiana Jones movie.
Exactly, they made about The Holy Grail and The Arc of Covenant but no Indiana Jones movie about The Holy Spear
Please don't give any ideas to Disney. They've created enough destruction and suffering as is. 😛
Reminds me of the sword in the original Conan movie
Right 👍
AWSOME CHANNEL!!!!
How many channels do you have, Dark? This channel has flown under my radar until now.😅
They forgot about the Pick of Destiny.
There are a few strange artifacts in New Zealand museums you could check out.
One is the "Korotangi" or Bird of Sorrow. Another is the "Tamil Bell". There is also the "Spanish Helmet". The questions around them are a mix of what actual are they, who made them and how did they get there ?
they seem like they all washed up ashore somewhere around the 1800s
It's funny that we have perfect examples. that have survived throughout history. Examples of what Roman soldiers Lance's would have looked like. No one is comparing what these artifacts look like. in comparison to the actual lances of the time
You can't anymore since most of the lances have been reforged and reshaped - like the ones with gold around it.
Great video very interesting, thanks.
If I can offer advice, maybe dial the music back a bit, it muddies the dialougue when its peaking.
That guy actually said the soviets would dominate Europe if they had the spear right after the nazis had LOST while holding it.
Technically it was in storage.
He who holds the spear rules the world...
what kind of literal idiot would believe in a spear! science is the only real religion! it wasnt jesus who saved us from covid it was masks social distancing lockdowns and the vaxxine!
That is the Ark of the Covenant btw and it always moves West it is also stated, but maybe the first to hide it made those things up idk.
I would suggest changing the into noise. the beeps and boops are ear piercing. The spear that would have been used would have been a basic spear head and not fancy at all. It wouldn't have been near as big either.
@Xhade Brinsbane That's just it the crucifixion wasn't ceremonial or ritualistic. it was a standard sentencing of criminals. they had normal guards and not an honor guard.
Dark 5 without Kevin MacLeod's "The Machine Thinks"?
That, sir, would be sacrilege!
The version of the spear that has what is evidently gold wrapped around its middle section, as well as many grooves and other embellishments rendered into the forging itself, is the version that I have most often seen in photographs and videos of the true lance.
However, it seems unlikely to me that such an ornate and no doubt expensive spear head would belong to an average Roman foot soldier.
I do not mean to imply that the holy lance does not exist, but if it does, I would expect it to be a simple and common object; nothing more than is required to arm the infantry. Assuming that to be true, it seems likely that it would be a difficult item to find, as well as to certify it's lineage back to Longinus himself.
Although I am not religious myself, I think it would be amazing and exciting to discover that the true lance still exists today and is possessed by some responsible party.
It was repaired with gold by the church.
Is there not a more verifiable lance/ spear contemporary to the time in question to compare all these with?
Only the oldest Bibles say that the blood and water hitting the ground caused a great earthquake that opened the ground and I can't remember the rest
Great Video!!!!!
Anyone know the ambient music in background around 5:30?
Doesn't Shazam or Sound Hound detect it?
I can get behind most things but a blind guard i cannot,as much use as a chocolate fire guard
Without the authenticity. Just stating the story is enough for many to believe in 'the story.'
I'll take bullshit Myths for 500 Alex

Well I personally seen Jesus walk on taco sauce but Jesus mows my lawn and his wife makes bomb ass tacos
Oh no! He's got the Gravity Hammer!
You’re videos are excellent. I do suggest that you lower your mixing music volume. It’s off balance and intrusive to the narrative dialogue
Constantine is a great movie
I always enjoy your videos....however: the music in this video was too loud, making your narration hard to hear.
The bg music gets disproportionately loud in some areas. I had to turn on subtitles to follow.
If the spear that pierced Christs side is so important what ever became of the nails that held him to the cross? History is weird! Love your work @Dark5. Edit: well we know where one nail ended up at least :D
The nails are known relics, possibly turned into into a crown or something. There have been quite a few throughout history.
@@crakkbone8473 Oooh that sounds pretty wild
Supposedly at lest 2 we’re found in the ossuary of Caiaphus.
There are enough "true" nails around to build a 12 room house.
& we know the alleged cross the pretend man was affixed to must’ve been between seven hundred to one thousand feet tall what with all the claimed splinters & shards people have put forth as parts of the true cross.
🤣i love this channel😅😂
I think they got that right, a nail was imbedded into the spear was dated to be of Roman 1st century AD origin by its composition.
Humanity has always been superstitious. Whether white, black, yellow, grey, or whatever other colours.
How could you be blind and a Roman Soldier? Is it a metaphor?
I don't think he was blind. However, there was a possibility that if it was true, he would've only been partially blind due to an eye injury during battle. Thus, leading him to only be of service for criminal executions, guard duty, etc. I don't know but that's a possibility.
Piercing the side of jebus gave the spear the ability of granting total victory over one's enemies.. which of course is something a such a peace-obsessed dude like jebus would want.. It's all so ridiculous.
In other accounts: He caught on fire and burnt himself up real bad 😂
I got your "Spear of Destiny" right here
What about the mysteries about the Holy Grail?
One day. I'll have a video about mysterious artifacts from the Crusades soon and one version of the Holy Grail is on the list...
This was a nice overview of the general history of the spear clearly it could be lost to history or reproduced even if it was original and dated back to that time it would still be a relic of interest but not the actual spear of course the comments here by all the basement dwellers are really funny
How condescending of you.
Got another one: What about the "German Bell"? I think you know what I mean.
I know exactly what you are talking about "Die Glocke" 👍
I just wanted to hear the story told by Mr.Gloom and Doom. This is how storys get stretched into legend to Myth. Thanks! He could make reading a phone book sound like a disaster.
If the lance in the picture your showing is what there looking for they will never find it. Soldiers didn't carry around goldin spears.
Those are repairs from the holy Roman catholic church.
awesome
The SCP universe has the best spear mythology. They call it the spear of the non believer or the godless lance. Pretty cool when it fights with the sword of Lucifer.
Love the video. But, why show a Greek warrior, when it's about a Roman? Plenty of pics to choose from.
Does anyone know what the object was they moved during the arc of Gabriel
Launches launched his lance into the lord? Wow.
MHO Best Dark channel 🤌
Longenus was the Roman Centurion Guard that pierced the side of Christ.
It's pretty clear given the spear's alleged powers and history that it does not work r have the abilities stated, at best only briefly and temporarily. If it was true then whoever originally posest it would have had ultimate power and would have passed it on to a successor as well as confirming its legitimacy and power. It's all just Smoke and Mirrors by the Powers that be as always just as well as now in the present time.
LOL Wait...So a Blind "Soldier" stabbed Jebus? So, uhh, Is that where the tradition of swinging at a Piñata came from?..
It would be cool if this spear can alter reality like it could do in DC's legends of tomorrow
Nah too obvious
@@user-ov8ji8oq2v ig maybe now that legends of tomorrow thought of doing it but mind you this the spear of destiny in the show was based of the real one so yea
I first heard of this spear in the film the librarian as a kid 😂
These relics exist because relics were a big niche market. Pious people would buy anything that was proclaimed to be associated with Jesus or anything from a Saint.
If blood/fluid were draining it is because there's still a heartbeat elsewise as dehydrated as he was and nothing by mouth in hours any blood would drain down as any fluids would also..so maybe this is a clue to whomever could read between the lines....
Anyone else think this would be about nukes or maybe lasers or something?
I really wanted to watch this but the background music is to high and makes it impossible
Let's not forget the other important artifact from Antioch. The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch which King Arthur used to smite the vile Rabbit of Caerbonnog. 😁😁😁😁😁
Spear of Destiny < Fork of Horripilation
Would the spear be a pilum?😊
This is way cool. But you need to turn down the background music. It made it hard to hear your narrative.
There is a possibility that one of the nails Jesus was crucified with was embedded within the spear. Great video...not enough research was involved.
Spear of Longinus
Casca the eternal mercenary
I can’t see the soldier being blind
Superstitions and fables passed down by generations. "Anybody that has this thing in my hand shall rule the world." Proceeds to get defeated, then "Oh, that's not the real one, this one is."
The part of history I find to be the most fascinating is, we still don't know how much of it was fabrications or counterfeits that were handed down. The more artifacts we find, some can be explained away to a religiosity that will "find" reasons why the previous artifact was not the real one, but not divulge it, and by that point there are so many fakes, they just make up another story. On top of that, the people maintaining the artifacts were the same ones that had every reason to misrepresent it from the start. The same church that relies on the beliefs that the artifact is authentic, is also the same one that needs to maintain it is authentic to prove their beliefs. If the Vatican were to allow true investigation into it's relics, they have a religious and monetary motivation to make every effort to ensure their authenticity is not disproven. If these "artifacts" were to be disproven, the perceived value drops from $3 Billion to $1 Million, so they have a financial stake & religious motivation in limiting access. Counterfeiting always had a financial motive, so how many of the relics we have perceived as real were actually fakes that were unknowingly believed to be real? I would be heartbroken if I spent my entire life investigating an artifact just to find out it was a fraud from some shyster back in the middle ages or earlier.
They learned the lesson of letting the Shroud of Turin be investigated too closely, and now it's whole authenticity is murky because carbon dating dated it to "between the years 1260 and 1390" to a 95% accuracy.
Add in the fact that the Catholic church always had a an anti-science stance (because it could have the ability to disprove them), and I take any religious artifact with a grain of skepticism.
It's frustrating that one has to be skeptical of everything because the Catholic church has such a history of representing their own best interests instead of humanity's. It continues to this day as they still protect themselves instead of the victims of the church abuse scandals among other things.
Science continues to evolve, but the church still protects itself instead of humanity. They preach "The Truth", but have proven to lie (often).
I may have gone a bit off topic, but is it wrong to question a narrative or, is it better to prove a certainty?
So they gave a blind man a spear? Seems like a dangerous decision for everybody else
It was a seeing-eye spear
⭐⭐⭐
If you say you have more then one, then you have a big shell game. They keep moving it so it cant be found.
The spear is lost and buried somewhere. Otherwise, it would have been used in today's wars by a major military power
Nah if a country had it 80% they would be nuked off the face of the earth with no warning because it can be used to conquer the earth if the other country couldn't steal it
Only heathens would take pride in a object that pierced our lord
Truth is: none of them are the actual spear.
Have you seen a Roman spear? They not anywhere near as elaborate as any of the supposed "spears of destiny" if the real one is out there: we will never know it's true location.
Why would a spear that stabbed Jesus give people power? if that is how that works than this is hell😢
Well Christians wear a cross, the instrument of death that Yeshua (Jesus) died on.
Background music is too loud, makes it hard to listen
Actually, Jesus was intended to die on the cross as reparation for the sin of all mankind, as the ultimate sacrifice which was represented by the Jewish practice of sacrificing a lamb on the day of atonement for the Nation of Israel, it is important to note, the lamb chosen to be sacrificed could have no blemish, be sickly or have broken bones. If the Romans had broken the legs of Jesus (as was the practice, since in order to breathe while on the cross you had to push up with your legs, and of course when the legs were broken you suffocated) it would have made Jesus an unfit sacrifice.
Thank you for sharing Dark5. This is something very difficult to express. Especially having seen the movie "Constantine". How truth can be stranger than fiction. Although there are similarities in the movie that, do not depict the accuracy of the true spear. It remains one of the most controversial movies about it. Besides that of "Passion of the Christ". I admire that you had enough courage to research this without anyone going after you. I'd be a little scared if I got into it. Well, "Constantine" was scary. Thank you though, this is really interesting content.
Indeed you are right, Nero is the same way, we are taught and so believe he was some dumb monster but looking at his personal history he is 100% a different person and not that monster taught to all, first off he had zero to do with hurting a certain religious people in the arena, that was another person's job and not the rulers in irony to popular belief. Nero's mother was messed up and for decades played chess with her son like he was just a pawn of use and nothing more yet he did her in is the part we get in school and history that stands out most. So much in history is just like this tiny example.
A blind sentry?
Seems unlikely
Come on now, does any thinking persons believe that the Romans had “blind” spear soldiers in their ranks?! Come onnnnnn…….
War injuries were common
so he was a blind knight and was told to poke jesus? How did he know where to poke?
Same thing I was thinking. Not a very useful soldier if he can't see.
How about a video on cursed or haunted weapons? Like the Japanese samurai sword that ki- lls everyone who unsheathed it, the Winchester rifle? Artifacts of the vatican's vault etc
"The Spear of Destiny have been proved as a Medieval faux.
The Spear was radio carbon dated to be from the third century not the first century 😮
