Barry was humble in the public eye. He loves beer and women. Nothing wrong with that. He was responsible about it and very much in control, unlike myself in my younger day.
It's sort of wierd that Thurman has sort of forgotten. So much of the focus of that era in the NFL is on Barry and Emmitt. Thurman was one the most versatile backs in the history of the NFL.
That Buffalo defensive front 7 is kind of in the same boat too. They were pretty damn good but nobody really mentions them much. Bruce Smith is the NFL all time sack leader.
Being such a dynamic threat out of the backfield in the passing game, Thurman has had big influence on how guys play the position today. e.g. Christian McCaffrey, Cordarrelle Patterson, Deebo Samuel etc. With the blending of what positions are expected to do in the modern NFL, running backs and wide receivers are no longer just running or receiving in the same way Fullbacks have been phased out in favour of using Tight Ends in the running game, even lining them in the back field.
I feel Thurman gets a bad rap from the SB losses losing his helmet and all. This guy was an all time great. An all purpose back who would thrive even more today cause of the natural of game which values all purpose backs a lot more. I mean he won MVP of the whole league in 91. Great player.
He’s a HOF’er. Anyone who speaks negatively about him or doubts his legitimacy simply doesn’t know football. I do agree that he doesn’t get all the shine he deserves which makes it sad for real football fans that hasn’t heard of him bc they’re missing out on a very talented rb and a overall special person and making it to four straight Super Bowls is an amazing accomplishment in itself so he deserves praise for just that alone.
90’s was real football. They were advanced enough to understand the game well and they were allowed to come take your head off. You were likely getting smashed every run if you were a running back.
I was born in 1978. Been an NFL fan since 1984. There are very few players I would have paid to see in person. Reggie White. Lawrence Taylor. Peyton Manning. And Barry Sanders.
I rock my #21 orange Oklahoma state jersey about once a year. Barry’s always been one of my favorite athletes in any sport. And these are both good men, too. 👍🏼
Two Legend Barry Sanders the best running back and Thurman Thomas the most complete running back to ever play the game he can run he can block and run route like a receiver he change the game
Before I realized I was a Bears fan these 2 were my favorite rbs growing up and I had absolutely no idea they were college teammates. 2 HOF rbs on the same field at the same time. I wonder how often that has happened. Great video, thx.
They were both so fun to watch. I'm a Bills fan, so there is bias, but for Thurman not mentioned often with the best running backs of all time is a crime. There shouldn't be a question that Thurman is one of the best ever, like it is with Barry. Thurman led the league in scrimmage yards for 4 straight seasons, and he would have had so many more touchdowns if the Bills didn't take him out in goaline situations for the backup Davis because they thought it was unnecessary and to avoid him getting hurt, unlike Emmit Smith who had so many touchdowns within the 5 yard line. (Don't get me wrong Emmit was great too) I'm just saying Thurman's numbers would be padded even more if we didn't pull him.
I have been a Bills fan since the 4SB and Thurman was my favorite Bill of all, but Sanders is SO TALENTED, and the only thing that outshines how talented he was is how humble he was.
@@viperguyz just like they did Megatron too!! Their front office was just mentally messed up in general when it comes to how they "handle" their superstars

Sorry to disappoint anyone but the greatest runningback did attend OSU and he wore the number 21. Nothing against Thurman Thomas but Barry was the greatest pure runner, hands down.
The Big 12 ( Big 8 /SW conference) will forever be the GOAT Running back factory. Earl Campbell, Billy Simms, Thurman Thomas, Barry Sanders, Ricky Williams, Priest Holmes, Jamal Charles, Adrian Peterson, Demarco Murray, it will be interesting to see what Bijan Robinson will bring.
What an honor for Thurman to be considered in the same category as Sanders. Thurman just does not get any respect and its tragic. He carried the Bills to the super bowl.
Fun Barry Sanders fact- He is the all time leader in most rushing yards LOST by a running back with over 1,100 yards. He’s also my favorite running back of all time.
If it was any other back on that team they might have -2,000 yards. I’m looking at his negative yards runs and there’s no where to run when he’s handed the ball in those situations. That poor line failed a lot at creating plays for him.
@@viperguyz that’s not true Barry’s O line wasn’t horrible Lomas Brown, and Kevin Glover were both pro bowlers, he could of took the 1 or 2 yard gains but he would try to make something out of nothing and lose yards by doing that!!!
Thurman was an unbelievable talent ...its unfair the fact he did everything so well detracts from his legacy...if he just ran the ball he would be mentioned with the elite backs
Barry Sanders was a once in a lifetime talent at Running Back that I have yet to see since he retired. Before him was Walter Payton and Jim Brown. To me, Barry Sanders is the best Running Back ever and also the best Running Back to never win a Super Bowl. I mean who could with that Detroit team back in the 90’s? Scott Mitchell and Rodney Peete at Quarterback? Please?! The Lions never built around Barry Sanders like the Dolphins didn’t build around Dan Marino. That being said, Dan Marino is the best Quarterback to never win a Super Bowl. Could you imagine if they both were on the same team?! I’m a firm believer that every winning Super Bowl Quarterback great has had a good Running Back behind him. Griese/ Csonka, Bradshaw/ Harris, Montana/ Craig, Elway/ Davis. Except Tom Brady. That dude literally won championships with so many different Running Backs during his long tenure with the Patriots. Trent Dilfer is the exception to what I just said. No offense but Dilfer was not a “great” quarterback. Sorry, but that Baltimore Defense won that championship that year against the Giants.
I wonder if there's ever been a college running back teammate duo that led their colllege team in rushing in back to back years that have both gone on to enter the pro football hall of fame.
Can't think of any. Todd Gurley and Nick Chubb might have had a chance if not for Gurley's injury issues. Jerome Bettis and Ricky Waters were a heck of a college backfield that did pretty good in the pros.
To hear Barry Sanders tell what he mostly did as a kid of helping his Dad with roofing as his job was to bring the 50.lb bucket of TAR and bundles of thick roof tiles up on the ladder during SUMMER is very motivating of new ways to work out and even train. Barry had very massive legs as they were bigger than most taller guys. That type of work out of climbing a ladder with extra weight is risky but if you can find a safe way, legs should be extremely sore the next day or 2.
He wasn't wrong. Rusty Hilger, Chuck Long, Andre Ware, Rodney Peete, Gary Danielson, Eric Kramer, Eric Hipple, and Scot Mitchell. It was a rotating circus of lower end QBs. Hipple and Mitchell were the only two that were even above average.
@@jonmohney6975 You forgot another lower end QB, Charlie Batch. But the only thing I'll always give Batch credit at is his blocking. But other than that, yeah he was a scrub too!!

If either of these guys had the opportunity to step into the situation Emmitt Smith lucked into on that Cowboys team… They both would’ve destroyed the numbers that Emmitt put up.
Not exactly. Nobody could run behind the o line emmitt could. People don't understand he didn't have the same o line his whole career. He was putting out 1000 yard seasons with different guys
I was born in 1989 but the best combo of my lifetime in college is either the 2001 miami backfield or arkansas with mcfadden felix jones and peyton hillis or auburn tigers in 2004 who had cadillac williams and ronnie brown who both went top 5 in the draft for the only time in history
As a fan of the Lions, I can't believe we wasted his generational talent. I hope we don't make that same mistake again with a certain different offensive position.
The thing is the second Thurman and Barry left the NFL, Oklahoma State sucked for many years after that. Look up the record of up Pat Jones who was the head coach after the 1988 season. They go from two straight 10-2 seasons in 87 to 88 to 4-7 in 89 and 90 and 0-10-1 in 1991. They were the best ever for OSU up until Les Miles came to OSU to revive the team and then Mike Gundy who was the QB's for both Thurman and Barry to continue that tradition. Too bad they couldn't beat Oklahoma or Nebraska who were ALWAYS the top dogs in the Big 8.
Sanders’ stats wipe Thomas out of the conversation, but if anyone asked me who the best running back to come out of Oklahoma was, I’d tell them it was Marcus Dupree.

I'm a bill's die hard fan since 89 and consider Thomas to be a great running back but Barry was just on another level of greatness
Thurman Thomas the most underrated Hall of fame back of the 90s.
Scott Norwood missing that kick cost him Super Bowl MVP...then his performances in the next 3 Super Bowls were abysmal. That probably hurt his legacy.
