How do Scouts Counter Soldier?

  • Scout is commonly known as a "counter" to soldier, but with soldier being such a powerful class this requires some legwork from the scout. How do scouts effectively deny bombing soldiers and what skill and considerations go towards protecting a medic?

    hi wild rumpus, shounic recently made a payload map for his 100 player server which is literally just a circle with tons of choke points and no flanks at all. that has nothing to do with this video but i just thought you might be interested in what the super casual side of the tf2 playerbase is up to

      he also did the 100 player class wars experiment, and one of the things I was wondering was whether that says more about how easy the class is versus how actually effective the class is when played by good players. rumpus just made a video about how soldiers will have comparatively higher stats in lower divs; this is probably amplified even more in casual games, where easy to play classes on average just have better stats whereas hard to play classes have lower stats
      in particular, soldier, heavy and medic are really easy to have some sort of impact with even if you have literally 0 hours on that class, whereas scout, sniper and demo are much more likely to be literally useless if played by someone who doesn't know what theyre doing and/or can't aim.

    Glad you managed to get up that level 3 sentry and a dispenser on the last point only for them to not manage to push it at all

    Not too long ago, Scout became my most played Class and I can definitely say he's in that archetype of characters where "They are hypothetically unbeatable at the highest possible level" at least in 1v1s as far as scout is concerned. I'd say my scout is ok as far as Pub Scouts go.
    Sorta akin to sniper, but IMO landing meatshots is much easier than quickscoping with at least slightly more margin of error. So I'm not surprised to see that at high level sixes, Scout can counter a lot of the classes in 1 on 1 combat.

    If I can ask a question, if you trade a Soldier to take out another player, which classes would make it so you have advantage and which disadvantage?
    Like, both for the 4 main classes and the 5 smaller ones. Is trading a Scout for a Sniper a good trade? What about a Demo for a Heavy? Or Scout for a Soldier? Losing your Medic is always devastating; but if you kill the Engi but the Sentry is still up with most it health how bad is that?

    • @Wild_Rumpus
      @Wild_Rumpus  26 днів тому +7

      this might just end up as its own video actually but typically trading as a soldier is neutral if not positive, unless its a situation in which youd really want a soldier (just before holding last on disad, need a soldier to take an exchange, etc.)

    Is it true pocket scout is a relatively new role that came after the medic was buffed by matching movespeed with scout when healing them?

    • @martinpk02
      @martinpk02 26 днів тому +5

      IIRC passive/aggressive or combo/flank Scout distinction has been around for much longer (for example it's discussed in old Marxist's 'Precepts of' guides), but I think pocket Scout as a role fully developed after the medbeam speed change, with Pocket Scout getting more heal % and taking over maincalling, it's kind of been gradual though and other changes contributed to that meta shift as well, for example arrow uber building (introduced in 2015 and nerfed in 2017) led to xbow being more common which allowed Scout to get more beam and many actually consider gunboats to start the long decline in the importance of Pocket Soldier.
      Might be wrong on some of these points though

    Force A Nature, 1 second is all they need to twoshot you or crater from full health, although that pretty much applies to all 8 classes with heavy barely surviving.

    Is there any off class synergies that work well with each other because in my mind pyro and engineer seems like it would be oppressive to run full time

    • @MrSquiy
      @MrSquiy 26 днів тому

      No it's not. It is oppressive on gullywash last but anywhere else Engie is to slow and pyro is also to slow and has terrible range. Pyro is the most situational off class and Engie is the most defense focused off class.

    Do engineers counter scout in six’s ?

    • @dashyz3293
      @dashyz3293 27 днів тому +9

      Not exactly. It is extremely annoying to just see a sentry existing or being built, but you're sort of just trying to be a nuisance to a couple of players who can choose to simply not engage with you and let someone else better equipped do it.
      There's also the matter that without his gun, engineer is just a straight worse scout with less mobility, speed, and damage. And you're just going to be much slower if you try to even start building a mini, not to mention the time it takes for you to walk to the fight.
      If we're talking about last holds, typically speaking the idea is to always get the gun immediately(or even before the uber) and stop it from participativ in the post or continue denying space especially with its ridiculous KB. Being a still target, it's always easy enough to do unless the defenders decide to be an absolute rat and try to do funny stuff like pyros on last which has its own set of problems.

      Going engineer does make life harder for enemy scouts, but the reason you switch to engineer isn't to counter scouts. If you have a sentry up during a stalemate on last, the point of the sentry isn't to punish scouts, its to stop anyone from getting in for free. If its not a stalemate and the enemy team is pushing then the point of the sentry is to absorb damage and time from the enemy's uber. In general, I'd say offclasses in 6v6 are more about countering situations than they are about countering classes.

      sentries just counter everything in general most teams wont even try to push one without uber. remember theres only 6 players not 12, and when sentries are in play in 6s the engineer will always have a spawn room to hide in, so unlike in casual you cant just have like 3 soldiers on an off angle kill it with no medic

    Wouldn't the Force-a-Nature be a good tool for the pocket scout to mitigate bombs? Or is it just too lacking in firepower in general to justify its use?
