Living on a Narrowboat with a mooring and foraging Mushrooms

- Hey Freinds and Crew members, how is everyone on this wonderfully fresh Autumnal day? Autumnal has to be one of my favourite words. So it’s mushroom season. Although we’ve had absolutely no success with our own mushroom cultivation, Mother Nature has not left us wanting….
On a serious note, picking the mushrooms featured in this vlog is the culmination of 12 months of research and all these varieties are relatively easy to identify. If you are in any doubt about wild edibles do not take the chance. And even with a definite ID, always just try a small amount of mushroom as some people do have reactions even in mushrooms that are edible.

Love the whole foraging idea, especially mushrooms, but I am very wary as I don't know enough about them to be confident to eat them. So the foraging book would help to build my confidence I'm sure :) As you are a sculptor Chris, I thought I might share my favourite sculptor story....One day, a sculptor was working on a large stone sculpture in his garden. He was starting with a pretty square shaped piece of stone. He was chipping away early one morning and he noticed a young boy watching him through his garden railings. He turned to say hello, but as soon as he tried to talk to the boy, he ran off. This happened for many days until the sculpture was nearly complete. He'd produce a lovely carving of a bird from this lump of granite. The sculptor saw the boy standing there and when he turned to talk to him, this time, the boy didn't run off. The sculptor said, "Hello, I've seen you watching me, do you have any questions?" The boy said..."Yes, how did you know that was in there?"
That’s a lovely story Ronnie, good luck in the competition 👌😉❤️
I'm in Southern California in the US and I don't think I have ever seen such a humongous mushroom. I loved this mushroom episode! Also, as to your short videos... It's more then enough. I love your longer episodes, but at the same time it shouldn't be onerous to put out your videos. Your short clips are a welcome touchstone. Stay safe. Be happy in everything you choose to do. That is what I enjoy about your videos.
Thank you for saying. This means a lot to us xxx
Very informative, mushrooms always scare me as I don't know enough about them... But I absolutely adore a good mushroom dish. If i win the book it will go to good use and be sure to share if i have any mushroom hunting successes.
Keep well. 🍄❤️
Thanks Tony, good luck xxx
Another lovely video, thank you 💚
As a fellow UA-camr and also working full time with other commitments as well, I totally appreciate the work that goes into each video. I really love these regular shorter ones you're putting together so please do keep them coming 🙏
I would absolutely LOVE to win the book and/or a piece of Shell's art because..... the picture of Kevin is beautiful and I'd be thrilled to have him on the wall in our little cottage on the farm and because if I managed to forage some of those beautiful mushrooms then I'd be able to make that lush looking pasta dish and enjoy in Shell's words 'proper cozy food' which tastes all the better when it's home grown or foraged 😋
Keep on keeping on and take good care of yourselves, Roo 😊 🌱 💚 ☯ 💜🌳
Thanks Roo, that’s very kind of you. Well you are definitely in the comp so best of luck 🤞 xxx
Omg I didn’t realise there was a book you could buy to learn how to forage. I’ve just started foraging blackberries, damsons and sloes. Mushrooms seem too difficult, knowing what is safe and what isn’t. I know there’s wild British cherries but not sure how to identify them. I think I know of a tree but not sure. It’s so so interesting. I’d love love love the book. If I can’t win it could you please send the details, maybe I could purchase it, assuming it’s affordable.
Love your videos btw, keep them coming. We are actually looking into the possibilities of buying and moving onto a narrowboat to retire. Sending lots of love, good thoughts and happiness your way
Julie xxx
Hey Julie, it’s an amazing and tasty past time for sure, you’re in the comp’, good luck xxxx
Hi Chris and Shell, I loved your short video on foraging. Those mushrooms are amazing. I am, this week, starting a year-long course on energetic medicine and the natural world and its energies form a significant part of the course. The taking of gifts from and the giving of gifts back to nature to nurture us is a basic lesson of life. I have never foraged apart from being dragged brambling as a child and your book will help me in more learning and it will help me to pass on knowledge and understanding of the physical and spiritual natural world to others.
Thank you for sharing your amazing lives.
Thank you Richard. Your course sounds very interesting, good luck with it. Best Wishes from us xxx
First time on your UA-cam channel. Loving your love for what you do. I used to live on a narrow boat and miss it too much sometimes. I love my foraging too and desperate to learn more. I don't know whether you have chosen the winner for your giveaway yet, would love it but really doesn't matter as I'm enjoying what you do. Ps I've subscribed!!! Bright Blessings.
Thank you and welcome aboard. You are still in with a chance! Xxx
Great vlog amazing find .I can't get over the size of those puff ball mushrooms.Im quite scared of mushroom foraging as I know very little about them .I love to photograph them and I would love to learn more.Love the artwork.Stay safe and sane yourselves with your workload.
Thanks Noreen, I imagine you are surrounded where you are with edibles? Xxx
@@ChrisandShell Absolutely plenty of foraging to be done 🙏🙏
I know nothing so I touch nothing and I have no place to forage so the book would be a waste on me. I really love mushrooms and morels are the holy grail here in Indiana. Hard to find, expensive to buy and the window for them is so small.
I love your videos when they turn up. If it's often then great. If not so often I understand that you have real life and might not have the time.
Thanks Dorothy, thank you for saying this…. Xxx I’d love to find Morels! Xxx
Another lovely vlog….which brought back happy memories of fried sliced puffball…in lashings of butter….a childhood taste …funnily enough there seem to be more of them around this year so maybe I’ll pluck up the courage to cook one….xx
Do it!!!! It was beautiful in a stir fry…. Think the long dry spell and then all the rain certainly helped them fruit 😊❤️💚
Absolutely love your videos 😍 however long or short.
Thanks you so much xxx
Thank you. Take care.
You are welcome xxx
love watching the excitement of finding a beefsteak....I'd love the foraging book as I'm pretty proficient with blackberries and apples, but end up leaving so much good food that I'm just not sure about. Keep up the baaaaddddd work!
Thanks Jim, you are in the competition!!! 👌😊❤️
Would love the book, as a continuous cruising vegan I am always looking for new tastes and flavours! The ability to feed yourself from the hedgerow or forest is extremely rewarding.
Great video. Thanks.
Thanks Ken, unfortunately you’ve just missed the draw by a few hours….. we do giveaways regularly so make sure you’re subscribed and you’ve hit the notification bell. Thanks for watching xxx
I found a Maitake this week for the first time. Tasty but.. you know that thing asparagus does to your wee? Hmm.. skunk, really strong. Anyone else experienced this??
Is that stunk like a 🦨!!!? 😉 haven’t found Maitake yet….. 🤔✌️❤️
@@ChrisandShell yes :)) or the other sort of skunk. Not a good look, either way :)) look at the base of old poorly looking oak trees :) Do try it if you find it and let me know. Ymmv :)
Hey Chris and Shell! Wowee! Look at that giant mushroom!! I don’t actually like mushrooms but that pasta dish might convert me! Ooh what a lovely looking book and little Kevin 🥹! Please enter me into this wonderful competition!
Love Cathy macrame lady xx
P.s have you moved Peter? 🕷️
Your in Cathy, Peter has been relegated to the bottom of your beautiful creation as Danny Devil Ears has gone NUTS!!!! 💚🌱😊😂😉❤️
I think i should win the book because i was the first comment and i have been trying to find mushrooms for past two weeks lol great vid hope you both okay
Hope you find some soon!!!…🙏😉❤️
That was a fantastic entire Vlog! There’s no reason for me to win the book because I live in a studio apartment in Portland, Oregon, and have no where to forage. However, I bet whoever does win will be exceedingly happy to have not only the book but also King Fisher Kevin created by Shell! Bye for now.
Thanks Lynette, you’ll be getting some goodies soon anyway xxx
Loved the vlog. Love looking for free food alongside the canal
Thanks Steve, we love it! Xxx
You have now completely established your credentials as Hobbits lol!
YES!!!!! * off to celebrate 🎉 😬😉😊😂❤️
The book might make me confident enough to actually try foraging. I see chicken of the woods a lot around here, but am so unsure of my own guesses with identifying anything, so I leave it well alone. I remember as a kid my mum would send us off over the park early on a Sunday to grab all the field mushrooms before the football teams arrived for their matches. Your pasta dish looked superb.
What a beautiful memory, aww I’d loved to find Chicken of the woods, had it recently at Foxglove in Barmouth and it was amazing!!!! We’ve found blackening polypore which is very similar to COtW but also edible! Good luck in the competition xxxx
I don't comment often, but this deserves a big fat one!
Wow, look at the size of that one!! (Said the actress to the bishop). I am so so jealous. I've been looking for a puffball for YEARS, the last one I saw was over 30 years ago, and I didn't know they were edible back then. I eat young shaggy ink caps and wood blewitts when I can find them (my favourite, yum!) I did an evening course in mushroom identification at Newcastle University many moons ago, and still stick to just those I know. Never found a beefsteak one!
I'm looking forward to the cooking video and your tasting opinions. 🍄
And it's so good to see your happy face Chris, don't be embarrassed 😍
(PS I don't want to win the book, we are downsizing ready to move onto our first narrowboat in the Cheshire area 🙂🙏. My first inspiration was the Collins book 'Food For Free' which I still have, along with a more scientific fungus one).
Great video 😊
PPS my son just bought me a foraging afternoon for my birthday for this weekend! #meep!)
This is such a lovely comment Dawn, where in Cheshire will you be. I’ve seen loads of Puffballs this year, my first!!!! It was gorgeous in a stir fry….. the big one was off white so we left it!!!! Happy Foraging lovely xxx
@@ChrisandShell We are currently based in Congleton but will probably be continuously cruising at first. Thanks and may your hunting remain happy 😊
good luck to the winner
Lovely vlog well done, would like the book for son as he’s younger than me!! And has a life of foraging ahead of him
Thanks John 👌
Found lots of mushrooms but dont have the confidence to chance it ...even though I recognise some ..(including chicken of the woods )That's a great book and also the book knowledge to forage from You Tubes Home is Where The Heart is. If I'm chosen please pass on to someone else ...keep up the good vlogs ❤ take care both xx
We love Home is Where the Heart is, lovely family …. Thanks Carole xxx
You both have us in Awe, as we are aware of what you do and what you are responsible for. Shell's prints are excellent. HUGO says hello.
Awwww thanks Kelli, this means a lot xxx
Lovely to see a Vlog. I would love to win the book as moving to Wales to start a new life and foraging will be part of that life. x
How exciting Jane. Hope you are ok? Whereabouts in Wales? I’ve recently found some amazing Bilberries in Llandegla forest, which we will definitely be returning to next year! Xxx
@@ChrisandShell Pembrokeshire. Just getting the boat ready for sale (which is breaking my heart). Bought a residential static near St Davids. Got to find a job as giving mine up!! Gone full out!! Hope you three are well and i know how difficult it is caring for elderly parents. Take care xxx
Good on you Jane, sometimes you have to jump…. Best of luck with everything xxx
Well love this video, and would love your book and photo, well I as a personally photographyer every year I go to a place called Kuitpo Forrest here in Adelaide South Australia, to go and see the mushrooms growing, I love taking photos of them and even seen a few ghost mushrooms, and would love to have this book to see which mushrooms are the best to cook and eat...... so as they say..... please....... pick me... pick me..... pick me...................🤣🤣😀
Lyn you’ve just made it in time for the draw….. you can send us pics via Instagram…. ? Xxx
We took a foraging class many decades ago, but over the years we've gotten away from it. We'd love to get back into it but definately need a refresher. Best wishes to you both from Clarendon, Vermont, USA!
We’ll add you to the comp Donald, I’m sure there are many cross over edibles. I know the Native American Indians used strip of the Puffball as bandages for wounds as it has antibacterial properties 👌😊😉
You are too brave. If the mushrooms are not packaged and at the commissary…I ain’t eating it.
Brave/stupid it’s a fine line Mary….. xxx
I would love to. Learn what is out there to eat for free, especially with what is happening at the moment
Every little bit REALLY helps at the mo’. Definitely feed a family on a puffball!!! Xxx
Awesome puffballs, I would love to find some, only edibles I have found (that I know of) chicken of the woods that some little runt had taken a stick to and scattered, heart breaking. Sloes are looking pretty good this year wonder what I can make with those 😉
We’ll build a fire, you pop round with the slow gin, it’s a date! Xxx
i was trying to add photos of the mushrooms that I took photos of but couldn't work it out how to send here.... oh well.
Love the Chanel and your take on life, as for the book it would save me having to bore you on instagram messages. All the puff balls I found, 6 in total, where brown inside 😢
Oh Guys!!!! We couldn’t use much of the biggest one…. Keep searching, especially after rain in the night 🤞🌱😳🙏❤️
Hi guys, Chris what did you put in your cashew cream? As I’m also vegan. With all that is going on in the world I’m suffering a lot of anxiety. I have two beautiful dogs and a hubby that keep me sane. I would love the book and print. Reasons being I only feel happy when out in nature I have been trying to forage but its all a bit scary, need some guidance. I would love the print for my bedroom shelf to bring some nature inside. Peace 🧚🏻♀️
Hey Linda,
Unfortunately this contest is over lovely.
But the cashew cream is easy. Soak a handful of plain cashews (not roasted or salted), Aldi is the cheapest place to get them. Put them in boiling water and allow to cool for 2-3 hours, then remove almost all the water, and blitz them in a food processor. Gradually add some of the water back in until you reach the consistency required. You can then add salt, pepper, paprika and nutritional yeast until you get a rich cheesy creamy sauce…. You’ll love it!
Xxx
@@ChrisandShell hi guys, ahhhh I have been catching up on vlogs, thanks for letting me know. I make that cream as well thought you were making something different LOL. Although I’ve not thought about using it on pasta with mushrooms. Thanks for the lovely reply. Peace 🧚🏻♀️
