  • Somebody was out here hundred of years ago and I just found their stuff.
A 20 minute hike up a non drivable deserted dirt road and then 15 minutes of a hike into terrible land. Out of nowhere I see very old small and short rock walls showing the signs of land clearing and cultivation from centuries ago. Start metal detecting with the Fisher F19 and we are finding relics. Nail iron in the ground and stone square that must have been where a cabin style dwelling was. Old clothing buttons, spoons, tools, iron farm things and a nice thimble amongst the great finds. This was most likely a short lived settlers site from the early 1800s and they did not stay long. But this is how you find old places metal detecting. Reading the landscape history and exploring the woods. This place has probably been deserted 200 years.

I've found that type of relic here way out in the forest and it is so intriguing. It makes you wonder and excites you to explore more. Great hunt. I'm old now and can't do those type of hunts. But you keep my memory and imagination alive! Thank you!

Enjoy the beauty of nature that you include in your videos. 1800's occupation and the many years accumulation of vegetation, the metal detector you are using seems to be perfect for finding items in forested lands.😊

That new washer probably came off a portable climbing deer stand.

I believe that giant safety pin was used to secure horse blankets and cooling sheets back in the day. Modern horse blankets have buckles and Velcro fasteners but horse blanket pins are still occasionally used.

That's the reason I'm still addicted to metal detecting...just never know what the next swing will bring wherever you are!

Hahaha. A Boeing washer… too funny but scary that it could even remotely be true.
What a great day you had!
I love how you describe what you are looking at so we can learn how to read the land.
I own 23 acres of woods in northern WI that I haven’t even started swinging on yet as I live in IL right now.
You’ve given me a lot of information on what to look for now.
    Thank you!

That was a great Not Thursday!! Really enjoyed the video.
BTW, I've been listening to the birds in your videos with the Merlin app. I can't identify them all, but it did show that there were red-eyed vireos, pine warbler, red-breasted nuthatch and scarlet tanagers in the forest with you. 😊

What a beautiful day to spend in the woods, putting your land detection skills to the test, with good results. Interesting how deep some of the finds were. I knew someone who worked at Boeing when they still cared about quality. I'm sure he's horrified these days.

Some species of birds (especially corvids) like shiny small metal objects and will collect them for their nests. Eventually the nests deteriorate and the objects fall to the ground, and sink beneath the dirt. This is why we find out-of-place objects in the middle of nowhere like that washer. Either that, or it fell out of a hunter's pocket.

Maybe the washer was carried and lost by someone putting up a deer stand.

That giant safety pin may nave been used to display a hunter’s license on their coat. I used to have a lot of them.

Somehow I missed the "great finds" in your title. You apparently have very low expectations and are easily pleased.
BTW, the big safety pin is from a hunting license holder and pins on the back of a coat.

as most of know mant times prople arrived and threw up a fast temporary home, maybe winter was coming or they were waiting for the rest of the family to come next year or something like that......then quite possibly they decided to build the more permanent home somewhere better on the property for some reason or another and most of the time reused most of the material like doors windows all the good lumber and sometimes including the nails if they werent all bent up
