  • I get super nerdy about film history! Hopefully, this film history series will inspire some of you to feel the same. In this first lesson, we will go over the Japanese benshi, film narrators that stood next to the screen, and provided narration as the film was happening. The benshi profession eventually died out, but I greatly treasure this art form. Learn more about it in this video!

Fantastic video for this topic that doesn't get enough love here on UA-cam! Also, I really appreciate the detailed list of sources you used, great for doing further reading on my own. You might have come across this in your research, but, fun/not-so-fun fact, Akira Kurosawa's older brother was a benshi narrator and a big influence on Kurosawa becoming a lover of film, however once talkies took over the market in Japan, he commited suicide at least in part because of the depression of losing his beloved position as a benshi. Kurosawa talks about it in his autobiography.

I’ve been seeking out resources on this topic for years as my great grandfather was supposedly a well-known benshi in Tokyo before the war. All I know based on what my grandma told me 20+ years ago was that he owned a theater called the Tachibanakan somewhere near Tokyo Daigaku. His surname was Yoshida, but I’m not sure what his given name was.-I think it was Fusakichi or something like that. He also had a stage name that used his real surname and different given name I believe. My grandma said she was someone on TV years ago with the same stage name (probably a pupil). I know he was considered quite wealthy at the time and was married numerous times. I’m hoping to find out more if anyone hears.

I've recently started to take an interest in film history, so was wondering if you plan to make more videos like this? It's so well researched and presented.
