The legendary new wave dance-rock group got the whole world moving and grooving when they released the song in the summer of 1989 on their album Cosmic Thing. On this episode, The B-52s' Kate Pierson talks about working with producer Don Was on "Love Shack" to get it on the record at the last minute, getting a seal of approval from R.E.M., and the magic behind the iconic "T-i-i-i-n roof! I saw the B52's with the Talking Heads, in Austin, Texas, at the Armadillo World Headquarters, in 1978. A great, famous venue, but really, it was just an old brick National Guard armory, the same as you see in many towns, all over the US. Just a drill shed, with metal folding chairs for seating, bars and snack vendors along the side walls, and a low stage at the back. Right away, the crowd folded up all the chairs, placed them in their carts, and danced the rest of the night away. Unforgettable. One of the best shows I ever saw, up there with Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton.

I moved to Austin to join a band ONE DAY after the Armadillo closed. Missed it. But.....I enjoyed the heyday of The Back Room. My band was a major part of that heyday too.. and Steam Boat was also fun.

I met Kate at the Hot Club in Philly, I think in 1980? This was during the Rock Lobster, Private Idaho, Planet Claire era. Like my friend Pierre, I had REALLY long hair. That night, at the Hot Club, I made a decision to shorten my hair in order to help make me more palatable to program directors in Philly radio. Kate was very nice, and yes...hot...and I felt a little better about my decision.

I fell in love with Kate Pierson after watching the Shiny Happy People video she did with REM. But that was before I knew she preferred tacos instead of sausages. I still love her musical work though.
