  • I love to buy food in bulk, but it needs to be stored properly to protect it from light, moisture, insects, and more. I will talk about a number of methods that I use, and when and why I use them.
Hi, I'm Vickie. I live off-grid on a modern 40 acre, homestead in Northern Nevada. I love making sourdough breads, cooking, making soap, canning, dehydrating, gardening, making cheese, and a lot of other things that are required living on a homestead. I love to cook from scratch, and to be prepared for whatever life throws our way.

I’ve never heard of using a break-bleeder to vacuum-seal-and the fact that it’s manual makes it a must-have for sure-we’re gonna have to get one 😊👍
If you’re ever out of fingernail polish remover (I didn’t know it worked on sharpies), painters tape works well for the canning lids because I only have to peel it off for reuse.
I Love your channel lady, you inspire (and teach) me to be more self-reliant, thank you 🙏🌻🥰

I use rubbing alcohol (91%) to remove the permanent marker writing from lids. It's usually very easy to get and does a good job.

I've found that most dry goods (i.e. pasta, white rice, etc...) stays good for 5 years and even up to 10 years, so long as the jar is very full and an oxygen absorber & bay leaf are left on top. That's for canning jars that aren't vacuum sealed or anything. Oh, and I have found that it's best to use the amber jars, unless you're keeping the jars in a very dark & dry place.

I also store my dry goods in vacuum sealed jars . Love Winco too.

I have seen some people use the dog food holders that come with the gama lids and sit on their sides. They hold 50 or 60 lbs of food. You can find them on Sams club or online dog stores. Im sure you can find them other.places to.

Gasket solution for antique jars with glass top lids is to use the thick rubber bands from produce. The purple ones from broccoli/asparagus work great👍

Another way to remove Sharpie writing is to get an erasable marker and go over the writing. It will wipe right off.

I have found that you can purchase the off brand white plastic jar lids she showed at Wal-Mart and also amazon for a very small price.
As for the fact they won't seal tightly to the jar... I put a regular canning lid on the jar and use the white plastic lid as you would a ring, seals tight.

I store my dry goods just like you, Vickie. The storage buckets with gamma lids are so nice. I have the pry lid, too and it is invaluable. I save my Asure bags. Something tells me storage containers, jars, and bags are something to hang on to and will become scarce.

@@GoingGreenMom that's simply not true. It's an abrasive material made of non-toxic melamine foam. Akin to using a sponge, but made to be like very fine sandpaper in texture. There are no cleaning agents in the sponge and it uses the power of water and friction to get the job done

Have you ever put food safe diatomaceous earth in rice and beans and such. It's a super fine powder (usually used in swimming pool filters). You can sprinkle it around a house to kill ants and pests and so on. But about a tablespoon in a 5 gallon bucket kills pests in there and it is not hazardous to people. Just don't get it in your eyes and lungs. Check it out. Be healthy, stay safe and many blessings, Morgan

Our health food stores have both the gamma seals & a new one that after screwing on the lid, the middle of the top twists on & off !! It fits buckets holding 21/2 or 3 gallon- they hold about 20 lbs of sugar or flour. Live it cuz they're easier to move & store !!

Liberty I also bought some 2 and 1/2 gallon storage buckets from Amazon and I’m going back for more. They are easier to lift when filled, and are perfect for storing small amount foods like spices that I put in small Mylar bags. I got some gamma lids for my 5 gallon buckets and they also fit the smaller buckets perfectly. It’s amazing how heavy 5 gallon buckets filled with food can be. I also store emergency medical supplies and random small household items in 2 and 1/2 gallon buckets.

Amaranth can be popped like popcorn. It can br ground into flour or cooked as-is. Try dry toasting it in a pan first for extra flavor.
We reuse labels often. If we can't reuse the label (if it tears while removing) or if packing tape is pricey we use masking tape.
