"Bennington also commented on the meaning of "Crawling" by stating it was inspired by his own battles with substance abuse. "Crawling is about feeling like I had no control over myself in terms of drugs and alcohol, hence the line "These wounds they will not heal..." "

    • @ianmclean6399
      @ianmclean6399 Рік тому +1

Drug abuse is just another symptom of mental health.
Opioids for example gives a feeling that could be described as a warm and loving feeling of safety like a mothers hug.
If you are healthy have no issues live a happy life with a happy past it would just be a nice experience.
If you grew up without ever feeling safe or loved you are gonna want to abuse that drug.
Mental health is the problem substance abuse is just a symptom

@@jaydub0101 Interesting. Never thought of it as a song about addiction. I've always thought it's about depression. Wounds that won't heal does describe depression very well. But mental illness and addiction often go together and the song works whichever way you interpret it.

They saved my life more then once! Many times I was ready to take my life but decided to listen to one last LP song! That turned into listening to every album of theirs I had! Chester's singing and the words of the songs told me that LP Knew how it was to deal with the darkness in me! They didn't say, like so many others, that they understood what it was like! No they knew! and dealt with it! So sad and hurting that none of us could help him like he helped so many of us!

I remember that feeling - crawling in my skin. I was emotionally unstable at the time. It wasn't full-blown addiction yet, just the precursor. All the emotions that I didn't know what to do with, how to express, all those emotions just roiled and boiled inside me. It was the same later when I got clean.
I've never thought of this as a song about addiction. For me, it's always been about emotional wounds, insecurity, fear, and the desire for peace.

  • @paranoidrodent

This acoustic version really brings out the melancholy and sadness of the song. The studio version (the usual nu metal arrangement of the song) is far more aggressive and brings out the deep frustration, anxious energy and the sense of being on edge that emotional pain brings. I know UA-cam will engage in copyright tomfoolery if you react to the original metal version but I strongly suggest checking it out in private. It might just be something you add to one of your playlists.

Chester was pretty clean by what I know. Most of Linkin Park was. Depression and Anxiety are more of their demons.
I always thought this was more about Anxiety. The grip it can have on you. The feeling inside that feels like needles piercing. You have to push your mind and your muscles to a greater deal. That fear of not being or doing enough.

For those of us that’s had a life long battle with chronic depression and never been addicted to any narcotics or alcohol? Our depression is what affects us like an addiction that we just can’t shake. The narcotic and alcohol that some of us gravitate towards is the attempt of self medicating/numbing/stifling it. The chemical addictions are seriously and honestly are a byproduct of that attempt.
There’s honestly nothing that will get rid of it. Every day is a battle won or lost during a life long war. Management is the closest thing to a cure that there is for us. #mrlboydreacts

Well said, my friend. As a long time sufferer of depression and, more recently in the past 6 years a diagnosis of Bipolar 1, I can definitely attest that you can minimize the pain through medication (although meds don't always help everyone) and that even if you find the exact correct medications, you are still fighting the battle. I'll be fighting this for the rest of my life, the only thing I can do is make sure that its a long life full of love and friendship and happiness as much as possible. RIP Chester

The original studio version of "Crawling" is one of their early songs and has a lot of screaming and is completely different from this one, one of their major hits early in their career.

This song is amazing because it encapsulates several aspects of what it's supposed to mean and is open to interpretation. This is the essence of music. Anyone can listen and hear their own unique individual stories within the lyrics. I feel this song is about mental health situations, having personal experiences with them and the difficulties they impose. Chester Bennington will live on far beyond his years spent with us, and we will be graced with his music forever.

It is well documented that UA-cam's copyright strike structure is one of the stupidest, most lopsided against content creators system ever put into existence, so I was fairly confident that was a large part of the reason you tend to use live performances.

Whoa, never heard this song in this way before. It's one of these songs that's of my generation, always on the radio and everyone at my high school listened to them but it was just never my jam. And now hearing it just reminds me of those days, even the original version. Music is a hell of a thing.

This was the very last song Chester ever performed. He hugs the crowd and allows them to embrace him, both physically and emotionally. This was his goodbye to us.

Chester had such a beautiful voice. All of his songs mirrored his life (addiction and depression) . To me some of his songs were a scream for help. That he killed himself makes the lyric even more heartbreaking

If I recall correctly this was their last show before Chester's passing. I've always thought this intimate version of the song was his way of saying goodbye to the fans.
You should check out the studio or a different live version, it is a totally different vibe. The vibe of this song is more hopelessness and despair, whereas the studio version is a lot more aggressive akin to frustration and anger at the situation.

Godsdamn, I haven't really been able to listen to LP since Chester passed without getting messed up, but this just twists that blade a bit deeper. As a person who has dealt with severe depression and anxiety since my early teens thier lyrics had always spoken to me, but the stripped down songs with Chester just being himself, he just made everything so much more. It hurts. Can't do it without ugly crying.

This is so different from the album but it also so much better. It is not about addiction and most of there early song deals are hard hitting issues(teen angsty) and also about depression. It helps knowing this stuff is real and happens to other people.

This song is about emotional and physical abuse. As depicted in the music video showing a woman in an abusive relationship. And for the first years the band performed it was an extremely hard song for Chester to get through live because of how much he related to and understood the pain behind the words

@TheMaskedHero it was In the End that the crowd sang just after Chester died. This performance was the last one he did and that was 2 weeks before his suicide. It was like he knew that was the last song he was going to sing to his fans live. For the majority of that concert he was down in the audience when he would have normally been up on stage rocking with the rest of the band for the majority of the concert.

This song, for me, relates specifically to severe depression. Chester has been in countless interviews speaking about the depression he's delt with for years. Not sure that narcotic addiction played a role, but depression absolutely did. Breaks my heart.
